Day 15: Google Translate

Google translate may not be perfect, but it's come a long way. Here is how I use Google Translate to assist in language learning.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Google Translate puede no ser perfecto, pero ha recorrido un largo camino. Aquí es cómo Tim utiliza Google Translate como ayuda en el aprendizaje de idiomas.

That technique is the one I´m using currently to learn some norwegian! I´m a native spanish speaker, but I know german as well and it becomes easy to understand norwegian when you compare it with german in a way you´ve just showed!

This probably works for major languages, but for the many less common languages spoken (like Mongolian which I am learning), it’s very unreliable, and truth be told, only confuses me

Not at all. Non is better, and google translate is available in over 100 languages. Even less commonly spoken languages like Amharic translates almost perfectly in English

From what I've been taught and told and from what I've experienced myself, google translate is an awful translator. However, I also know that you're incredibly good at learning languages, so I'm torn about taking this advice haha

Do use it. It’s not awful at all. In fact, it’s almost perfect these days especially with AI. Mistakes that it will occasionally make are extremely minor grammar mistakes which are useless in the target language anyways. I think people really understand estimate the power of google translate

yfev: a lot of dictionaries provide better translations for individual words and sometimes very common phrases, but a dictionary can’t do what Tim showed in the video, which is quickly and easily making a chunk of text understandable. GT should not be used in place of a proficient human translator, but that does not mean that it is useless.

Saoirse I would go as far as to say that it can replace a human translator...if you’re just learning the language rather than translating important documents. I think you guys really underestimate the power of google translate.

Trying to get a reaction from people there? It’s not the hardest language, but it’s complicated grammar combines with its similarity to English to put it in its own unique category of difficulty. I assume those who find it easy have good memories for arbitrary genders. The cases are at least logical.

My mom was studied languages in university and she said she found German a lot easier than Swedish or any other language she tried because all of the rules were very basic and logical. Even when I was in Germany I could understand the signs because the words are so similar to English.
