Good to see young men considering the trades. You have the right attitude about the guy's you're working with, most do want to see you make it, I mean we all remember starting out. There are some pricks, and guy's will test you out and have some fun with you, but you hang in there and they will treat you like a brother. Good luck to you, and I wish you a long happy career in the trades! I was a Boilermaker welder for a long time myself 👍

Great trade! UA Steamfitter here to. The learning never stops. Probably have to travel for work here and there. It's wise to have something on the side when work is slow. Don't be shy to book a week off now and then to spend time with family.

I'm to be 40 in October but have plenty of experience in the trades. Congratulations to you in your apprenticeship journey too man 👊💪🙏 maybe I'll upload my first KZread video about my first few experiences once I nail this interview next 💪 As always consciously congruent regards -Steven

I’d like to add to not wait for the ibew union to contact you from the list after the interview. Search for every union electrical shop in your area and APPLY TO THEM ALL.... on the applications put electrical apprentice, electrical pre apprentice, and shop worker. Getting an earlier in at a shop will always benefit you instead of waiting for someone to contact you from the list.... pre apprentices and shop guys already at a shop will get the apprenticeship for that shop before they even look at the list

Good luck with everything brother. I’m entering my 3rd year as an apprentice for my local plumbers union here in NY. I’ll always remember my first day as the happiest and proudest moment of my life when I was 19 years old. You learn quickly though being Union is great and all but nothing like it sounds on paper. Prevailing wages of $74/hr here + $37/hr in benefits seems too good to be true bc in reality it isn’t what it seems. You’ll soon realize the sound of making 6 figures with a high school diploma comes with the trade off having no stability throughout your 30+ year career. Where you find out the reason you make $2,000 in 1 week comes with those 6th month periods where you’re living off an unemployment check. You can choose to wish avoiding the layoff or you can choose in your first year as an apprentice to become one day indispensable to contractors where you will earn your living prospering in your career

I'm still a UA member of local 189 although I haven't worked in the trade for years. It wasn't easy for me when I did my at that time 4 year apprenticeship. Thankfully all the different trades men were not all assholes. Only problems I encounter was from my union brothers, women were not really welcome at that time. Rule of thumb, steel toe shoes, 6 ft rule, and a pair of channel locks. Hang in there.

This is really embarrassing but I really need some help so I'm willing to deal with the embarrassment.Does anybody have any advice for an older man I'm 38 years old and I have no direction and I have no experience doing anything except for landscaping I would like to learn some sort of trade and I don't even know where to start to be honest but I'm sick of being broke and I'm sick of not being able to provide for the people that I love and care about I just need change. Because I don't have any skills and because I'm 38 and I have nothing to show for it I fell into a deep depression and if I don't get out of this I just don't know what I'm going to do I need help and I don't have anyone to help me I have prayed to God and I have tried to work menial jobs but I want something that I can be proud of I want something that I can work my ass off all day and even though it might suck sometimes I can go home what they sense of pride for getting stuff done and learning and being somebody if anyone could please give me a message with some honest advice I greatly appreciate it. Please no bashing me I understand and I know the odds are stacked against me but I would appreciate only positive and uplifting responses I can make myself feel like s*** all on my own and I don't know where else to turn so any advice would really be helpful thank you and God bless

Your not too old to start. First thing you have to do is find out apprenticeship programs in your area. Second put in an application. Find out the requirements for whatever program you decide to pursue. If you really want it it will happen.
