When my husband and I (both huge Trekkies) got married earlier this year, my vows included the line "I promise to join with you, and stand with you, against all who would oppose us". It seemed the honourable thing to do.

Even more than 100 years ago the 'obey' thing was on its last legs. Laura Ingalls Wilder writes about it when she's writing about her wedding, since it was still somewhat common then and she wasn't willing to say it. Her husband and the minister both agreed and had no problem with not having that. By now that tradition has been dead for at least three generations. I've never met anyone alive who had that. It never occured to me it might be alive somewhere (in some rural southern US place I guess?)

Stop with the racist Orientalism. You've never seen a Western wedding. You watched a TV show so you think you know what weddings are like. There is absolutely nothing worse than a oikophobe who hates their own culture. There's German weddings, French weddings, Italian weddings, American Southern weddings, all with their own distinct traditions and practices. Go move to India if you love your idea of what their culture is so much. They would absolutely hate someone like you.

Not to mention they went thru Klingon tradition and rituals to finnally tie the knot, including beating the crap out of each other! Lol. And General Martok's wife put Jadzia thru hell to see if she was worthy enough to join her family. But she prevailed. Now, where will they spend their honeymoon?! Good question! Lol.
