well technically it was when they brought back the original writer he intended for it to be dawson and joey that's why the first part of the episode is more geared to them it was only halfway through that he realized djo didn't work anymore and that half of the show happened without him and he decided that it made more sense for her to choose pacey

Lubbylove89 Agreed. Pacey and Joey fought a lot but they were written in a way where they worked through their problems and even after that gosh awful Promicide break up, the episodes afterward showed them maturely dealing with realizing they couldn't make it work but that they still loved each other very much. Joey and Dawson were written as better best friends because they would stay together for a minute and then break it off. It wouldn't have made sense for the couple who had a real relationship for 9 months to not be together because of a couple who could never work through their problems whenever they were a couple. Plus the K Mart episode sealed the deal in my eyes. Why give Pacey and Joey their own for her just to realize she belonged with Dawson a few episodes later lol I know Kevin Williamson who was brought in to write the series finale was a die hard Joey and Dawson fan and wanted to end it with them but even he changed his mind realizing Pacey and Joey ending up together made more sense.

@@LesEXO2012yes exactly this. Kevin wanted to make it Dawson/Joey because that was his intention from the pilot episode, but he left after season 2. He was actually going to stick to his original plan until the executive producer and both Joshua and Katie called him and said no, it’s been about Joey and Pacey this entire time. That’s the love story. Changing that would ruin the ending. Kevin changed his mind and seems to have completely come around to Joey and Pacey as the lead couple. He said if they did a reboot, he wanted them married with kids and was tempted to split them up just to watch them fall back in love again.

Deeper ? As in Joey spend their entire relationship picking up the pieces of Pacey ? Years of having to give him pep talk after pep talk about how he wasn’t a loser ? Years of his insufferable moping always moping every time Joey chose Dawson or told him no? Him refusing to take no for an answer over and over? It literally felt like Pacey always made Joey be with him by never accepting no as the answer . I liked Pacey and the only time I hated his character was when he was with Joey. He was always at his word when he was with her

Fact of the matter is joey and Dawson's souls never left the movie nights in his bedroom. Even in their short relationship that's generally where they stayed...in his bedroom. Pacey and Joey went through life together on the outside. He taught her how to drive stick, he helped her with her family B&B, hw challenged her artwork, he made her think outside the box, learned to dance together, the journeyed the coast in a boat - doing jobs together experiencing other areas, were coworkers for a bit. A human wants to be with someone who can help them grow. Even in the arguments they had and the prom. Life is hard and so is growth at times. But they did ut together. And thats why Joey chose that/Pacey over same ol movie night/Dawson

Pacey gave her lessons and taught her in the mornings. What the other was saying about adult relationships is true. Dawson and Joey weren't in an adult relationship. They stayed in his bedroom adult snacks and watched movies. There is no responsibility or adulting about that. With Pacey and Joey, he taught her to drive, he challenged her artwork, he helped her with the interview process getting into college, they sailed to other cities doing odd jobs together, they worked at a company together, learned how to dance together, learned how to do a B&B together. @heyyohill I think that one scene with Jen and Jack in the finale explains it all. Soulmates can mean many things. Soulmates do not have to end up together romantically. That's not what soulmates are. Soulmates are there for eachother not matter what forever. Unselfish love. And I think Dawson FINALLY achieved that in the end lol. Joey too.

Dawson since Episode 1 Season 1 had just one dream.. become a filmmaker.. Joey was never his dream, she was his friend. and as Kevin Williamson said, soulmates mean many things, its not strictly about romance, and in some way Pacey was a soulmate to Joey and Dawson as well, thats why he showed them ended up being friends in the end.. For Pacey, Joey was the one who inspired him to become better man, to overcome his insecurities and build a life for himself he could be proud of. He couldnt be with her with his life being wreck, which was the main reason why they broke up in season 4.. Them ending up together in finale makes complete sense because Joey was the thing that was missing in his life, he could never feel his achievements fulfilling without her. Yet he was still willing to let her off the hook and do what would make her happy.

The only weak spot of Pacey's character is that people tell him that he's a loser, but he actually isn't. Dawson's only good moment in Season in 5 or 6 (sorry I don't remember perfectly), when he shows Joey the set, the replica of his parent's house and how he finally manages to seduce her (yes, I mean banging her, thank God!)

I just started watching now on Hulu and knew nothing about the story. I was never into D/J from the beginning, mostly because it seemed like they were friends forcing a romance over two people who genuinely wanted to be together. But I can certainly understand the draw of childhood friends to lovers. Once P/J started though, for whatever reason, that relationship made so much more sense to me and I don’t think I’ve seen chemistry that electric in a long while. I’m so glad it’s Pacey.

Truthfully, the ending was bittersweet. I remember being young and watching it as it aired and continuously being upset with Dawson. It was evident she always loved him, but he could never seem to properly prioritize her. It always came off like he was sure she would always be there waiting in the wings. With Pacey it was different. Their timing may have always been difficult, but you could feel them falling in love. I think the fact that Joshua Jackson and Katie Holmes were actual first loves aided in that. The chemistry between them was undeniable. They truly grew up and experienced so much together. She wasn’t an option for him. She was main choice. It was sweet and almost whimsical. Watching the ending was hard because there was of course love between Dawson and Joey. They grew up so close. I can see the word soul mates ringing true because they were truly best friends and life long friends ( soul mates as friends, yes) Were they the love of each others lives. No, I don’t think so mostly because of Dawsons behavior earlier seasons. The reality was had he not fumbled so hard the opportunity of Pacey and Joey wouldn’t have existed. Some people can argue Dawson and Joey are Karmic rather than soul mates. I felt this scene, but it ticked me off watching it until the later scene of her and Pacey on the couch. I know everyone has their own opinion. I think it really depends on whose perspective you are looking at the story from. If its Dawsons. You’re team Dawson. If its Pacey. You’re team Pacey. However, if its Joey. If you really sit and watch Joey all of those seasons Idk how anyone could say Dawson over Pacey. Dawson brought out her insecurity. He made her question herself. He wasn’t giving her room to grow. So much was about him. What he thought, what he wanted. What was convenient for him. With Pacey she was becoming herself. He encouraged and helped her along the way. If thats not true love then what is.

I would have wanted a little more of them two after having decided to be definitely together. the relationship PJ was the most mature, the healthiest. they respected each other, they believed in the other, they wanted the best for the other they grew up, on the other hand DJ was a relationship of possession, jealous, selfish.

Well they didn't play Daydream Believer, but the played "Say goodnight, not Goodbye" and that was a song played at the end of season 1 when Dawson and Joey kissed. Joey named that in Coda as her most life altering moment. She didn't choose having sex with Pacey. Furthermore she named the kiss with Dawson at the beginning of season 5 as a moment she shook her status as mere mortal and achieved true greatness. A song so strongly connected to Dawson and Joey kissing cannot be more but also not less as stating that the show ends with a rememberance of Dawson and Joey having their first romantic encounter.

Thoughts at the end of the final episode After seeing the last episode of Dawson’s Creek for the first time, some years ago, I was in shock. How could Kevin Williamson let the couple that was destined to be endgame, and which the Creek, directed by Dawson Leery did, not let them be the endgame in Dawson’s Creek? How could soulmates, who expressed their love, until the final act of them being together, saying “You and me always” to each other, not end up together? I was flabbergasted, I felt robbed, I hated the series at an instant. After re-watching the series three, four times, alert on where I was wrong, I kept the same feelings, until recently. I re-watched the last five minutes of the show. - From Dawson and Joey saying “I love you” to each other; - From them saying “You and me always ” to one another; - From them watching Alexander climbing the ladder to what was now the room of Lillian, Dawson’s sister; - From the girl playing Joey in the Creek stumbling into the room of the boy playing Dawson, till them saying the same words as Dawson and Joey did to each other, until them finally choosing romantically for each other; - And at last watching Joey and Pacey in her apartment in New York where they watched the end of the Creek, and hearing Joey say “That was perfect, absolutely perfect”. And there it hit me. Was I hearing that right? Did she really say after seeing the other outcome, that she found that perfect, no she found it absolutely perfect? Do you realize the impact of those five words? Joey saying that the end Dawson directed, was absolutely perfect. What did that imply for the ending she chose, she directed? To manage my insecurity I asked the following question at chatgtp: “When someone values a certain development as "perfect, absolutely perfect" what does that say about other alternative developments? “ Chatgtp answers as follows: When someone describes a certain development as "perfect, absolutely perfect," it suggests that they hold the development in extremely high regard and see it as flawless or without any room for improvement. It implies that the development has met or exceeded their expectations and is considered the best possible outcome. In contrast, when an alternative development is being compared to the "perfect" one, it may be seen as inferior or less desirable. The use of superlatives like "perfect" indicates that the person values the described development above all others and sees it as the ideal option. It's important to note that describing something as "perfect" is subjective and based on individual opinions and perspectives. What one person may consider perfect may not be the same for another person. It's also possible that the person using such superlatives may be expressing their enthusiasm or preference rather than making an objective judgment. Additionally, it's essential to consider that no development is truly flawless, and there is always room for improvement in any situation. Well that’s hot stuff isn’t it? It suggests that Joey holds the ending shown in the Creek (being one development), in extremely high regard and sees it as flawless or without any room for improvement. It exceeds her expectations and she considers it the best possible outcome. Her own choice for Pacey, being an alternative development, she sees as inferior, or less desirable. She even sees the choice Dawson made for the Creek as the ideal option. Wow that really made my heart make a jump. But then, why is Pacey crying? You might expect from Pacey a reaction like: “You might think it’s perfect, I am glad, we made another choice.” Or something wise and witty like that. But to express his feelings by crying? And I know what was said about the tears of Pacey coming because it was the very last shot of the show. But that is out of context. What does the director tell us by showing Pacey’s tears? The tears are placed after seeing the end of the Creek and after hearing Joey’s valuation of it. So, did he perhaps value the word choice from Joey as explained above and thought that Joey expressed doubts about her choice for him? Does it feed his insecurities shown by him in season 4? I don’t think Pacey is emotional about the outcome of the Creek. Perhaps he is shocked by the choice of words like “I love you” and “You and me always” he saw for the first time as they were spoken between (the actors playing) Dawson and Joey, before Joey made her choice for him? I suddenly cannot place Pacey’s tears in any other way. Did I misjudge the Dawson Creek finals that much? Then, the next remark of Joey after she and Pacey phoned Dawson. What was the meaning of her saying that she is curious after the next season of the Creek, which was a genuine copy of Dawson’s Creek? Was she really curious about the new developments between Dawson, Joey and Pacey? Were the intrigues not over at all? I think it’s very possible that Pacey shows ever more of his behaviour as he did in season 4, and by the time Joey finds herself in world war 35 with Pacey, she starts to rewatch the Creek. She will find the outcome of The Creek not less perfect, no absolutely not less perfect and some time later she finds herself on the broken road that leads her back to Dawson. Ahhhh that smart writers. And then at last, but not least the music. What did they choose as last music item? Yes, the exact same as they did at the end of season 1 where Dawson and Joey kissed and what Joey mentioned in Coda of season 4 as her most life altering moment. Say goodnight, not goodbye by Beth Nielsen Chapman. That song is chained to Dawson and Joey kissing! It’s played during one of those moments Joey shocked her status as mere mortal and achieved, however briefly, true greatness, as she described at the beginning of season 5 Those four hints in less than one minute, a minute which first made me feel angry and sad, now strengthens my strong believe that after some short time after the last scene, Dawson and Joey will find each other romantically and live happily ever after. O and what about the last lines of the chatgtp answer? I think that Joey as an alumni in the English language will know what words to choose to express her true meaning. In season 4 she shown herself a master in how not to hurt Pacey’s feelings, by lying about the present she took form the True Love in episode 1 of season 4, or not telling Pacey about the gift she got from Dawson for X-mas in season 4, lying about the telephone call with Dawson right before she decided to have sex with Pacey. So I think the warning in the last alinea from the Chatgtp answer, doesn’t apply to Joey. No I feel Kevin Williamson found a very fine way to tell us there is more than hope for true Dawson and Joey shippers. I hope some Pacey-Joey shippers will try to convince me otherwise about my analysis A Joey’s reaction that the ending of the Creek was perfect, absolutely perfect B Pacey’s crying after seeing the end of the Creek and hearing Joey’s remark C Joey’s remark that she expected another season of the Creek D The meaning of the final music, Say goodnight, not goodbye

I guess the writers couldn't ignore the popularity of the Joey-Pacey pairing though.... just wish the ending made more sense and didn't seem so random,

Soulmate is not always something romantic, you can have a friend who is your soulmate and it's what this ending showed and what Joey and Dawson realized at the end.

my main problem with the finale was not the ending itself, but the fact that for the sake of surprise, they sacrificed the story way too much... some dialogues were not satisfying enough, they were intentionally ambigous to not give up the ending up front (yet they still did, and you can catch subtext of some conversations as a clear indication what will happen - Joey says to Pacey in the kitchen she will run away - next scene she says she knows with whom she suppose to be with, but then fear kicks in and she runs... ) So from perspective of 20 years later, i think that finale would be a lot better without intentional ending surprise... but it is what it is...

Denisha Jordan because he was busy putting himself in the "friend zone" by rattling on about himself all the time and in walked Pacey, humble and pure and interested in her dreams... and sexy, Pacey swept her off her feet. Dawson didn't stand a chance.

This ending made me sick! The show is Dawson's Creek, not Pacey's Pond! What a FN mess they made out of this show!

technically its more joeys creek because the show really is all about joey I mean she was in all 128 pacey was in 124 and dawson was in 122 episodes so both joey and pacey appeared in more episodes that dawson but the show is still joeys creek I never thought the show was about dawson ever I honestly think he was just the narrator of the story like he was tell all their life story
