Dawn rainy departure...Colorado early morning landing.

Shout out to Glen Keating for some awesome editing on this one! We had a few problems with the audio files I presented him, so we did the best we could. I had the intercom volume down a bit low. Audio is always a struggle!

Once again it has been a delight to follow your flying exploits as well as on instagram. I have recently returned to Melbourne Australia After visiting my daughter Melissa in Lower Manhattan for the past month. She became aware of my interest in following you on KZread and decided to surprise me by purchasing a hat and tea shirt from your online store. I was delighted and I must say they are top quality- will wear them with pride. I am a long time retired commercial pilot after thirty six years in the airline industry; naturally, I do miss flying and enjoy keeping up to date . The only flying I do these days is as a passenger and on my bike - BMW 1200RT. I am rapidly approaching my 74th birthday; my flying experience was very much old school by the seat of your pants but loved every minute of it. Many thanks- Cheers, Victor

About time!.. after watching all 12 years of vids back to your MU2 days, receiving my T's, magnet, personalized photo, etc and finishing up a couple weeks ago I was having P1D withdrawals! Audio might have been lacking but the visuals if the early morning departure through the storms, rotation racing the rising sun, and arriving into the Pueblo clear morning was Fa-nom-me-nal! This old prop pilot is living the jet life vicariously thru the P1D man. . Thanks Greg!

Your videos have always impressed me. This one really caught my attention because I used to live a few miles from the PUB Airport and know that area very well. Right next door to Flower Aviation (The FBO where you refuelled) is a place called Steel City Aviation. I took numerous flight lessons from there in Cessna 172 # N9614H. We used to fly the pattern many times and it wasn't uncommon to have the USAFA guys down there flying as well. I actually soloed there and haven't ever forgotten that day. Now, through some good luck, it's looking like I may FINALLY be able to resume flying lessons and maybe go all the way to being able to become a professional pilot. I can't wait. Your videos are informative, detailed and very educational. You've flown to at least 2 airports close to where I live or have lived in the past (KSDL and KPUB). If you ever make it to the Phoenix metro area, shoot me a message. I would love to meet you sometime.

I'll be wearing my new HIGH QUALITY P1D shirt tomorrow! Got a birthday party to go to. I'll be dressed in my best. 😉 That was impressive seeing lighting from above! I've only seen video of that from the Space Shuttle in the day, from much farther out. What a sight! I also loved seeing the sky brighten as you came out of the clouds - that's a sight I've never seen before. Must be even more impressive in person, I'd bet. My wife says, "Where are his headlights?" HAHAHA! Wet tarmac plus lack of sunlight doesn't make it show up very well. I pointed out the runway stripes to her when you lined up. 😄 I didn't think you could fly VFR at night. Shows what I know! One of the many reasons I love your videos - I always learn something new every time! Although something is telling me you mentioned this before in a previous video. I suffer from knowledge leakage ... it just pours right out of the brain. I have to keep topping it off! 😁 Thanks as always for the flight! Take care, and God bless.

I've heard that in Europe and Canada you need to be IFR rated to fly at night. I don't know if you have to fly under an IFR flight plan, though. That sure would've saved JFK Jr... if he'd obeyed the rule, that is. I felt more confident at night after just a bit of IFR training. Having the ticket gave me options later on. It's nice to have options when flying!

In the US you may fly VFR at night under 18,000 feet or FL 180; above that you must be on an IFR Flight Plan and be IFR rated obviously, Hope this helps.

Thanks again for having me along. Question: On your main heading display, what's the little "bug" that seems to scan from 50 deg. left of your heading to 50 deg to the right of it. It rests there, then scans again left to right. Doesn't seem like radar. Amazing to learn of the tools available even at the GA level, such as your radar capable of showing two different angles on two displays... PLUS NEXRAD! Your plane flies so smoothly! From the GoPro POV it's smoother than a G4. Was your F-16 anything close to that in cruise? It seemed smooth even on the descent to Pueblo, with (I believe) the spoilers out. I understand the audio problem. I also vote (if I have one) for the previous camera angles. Startup with the side view wasn't as good as the full panel view & the rear camera was for me, aimed too high (you might have fixed that later). I think you changed the right-hand camera too. To the editor: The long shot from about 9:00 to 11:30 out the side window didn't really show much. For me, switching to interior a few times would've been more interesting. I did like your showing the Sun start to come up and the music during the time-lapse sequence. Oh, and the 4-way split screen at the end! I submit the above in the spirit of caring about good video! :D

The bug going across the screen is the radar scan. On the co-pilot side PFD it scans the other direction and the tilt selected on the co-pilot PFD. So, you can scan at two different tilts. F-16 cuts through the air pretty nicely too as long as you aren't carrying a bunch of stuff on the wings.

Love the early departure, plus the sound of the rain on the windshield. I am a few videos/instagram stories off sequence here, but I recall some detail about an non-GPU start. What battery do you have on board that allows such a quick recovery from the first engine start. I can remember the interval being so short. What's the benefit of a GPU? Thanks, David.

  • @gregmink

    @gregmink

    6 жыл бұрын

99% of my starts at the home field are on GPU. The GPU allows you to run the air conditioning prior to engine start. And it saves greatly on battery wear. The quick recovery is only because of the GPU since the aircraft battery is not being used.

Hi Greg, audio seemed very low for this flight. Different to your usual volume. One question, during daylight you can steer around build ups, how do you avoid them in night flying? Does the radar only pick up precipitation?

If its significant enough, it will show up on radar.

Why doesn’t 390GM have windshield wipers? Odd question I know. It would seem they would come in handy. Awesome video Greg! Keep them coming.

It has a Rain-x type coating instead. And no, I'm not kidding about that.

When Air Traffic Control advise of slight to moderate chop do they warn of a bumpy ride due to turbulance.

It was very illustrative how quickly you lose your reference for the horizon in dark rainy weather when you lifted off. A question for Gregg. When you file a flight plan and you are going to stop for fuel can you file TYQ to LAS with a fuel stop in PUB or do you have to file 2 separate flight plans?

Those are two separate flight plans.

Great Vid Greg! Why do you shut off the avionics (I thnk that is what they are) before you start the engines?

Jessefsd saves drain on the battery, or on the ground power unit. Have also seen system failures arise from that switch from battery power to generator power

Do you have to adjust the throttle much during cruise to maintain a designated Mach number?

If I'm given a mach number to maintain, it takes minor fiddling. Otherwise, I just leave it in the max cruise detent.

Nice flight to Pueblo. Always enjoy early morning or night flights but apparently your camera has trouble adjusting to the available lighting. There was a haze which obscured the panel and vision. You do a great job but can't get it right all the time. Vision improved greatly on your approach into Pueblo.I assume you still use the GoPros which are notoriously known to be light hogs!

Thanks again Greg!. A PC12 at TYQ....didn't see that before? Newly based or a visitor? Just so damn lovin' that plane...... When I download the SID chart from Airnav it states "NOTE: Turbojets accelerate to 250K until reaching 10000, if unable advise ATC." I saw you were climbing to that altitude with around 235 kias. How strict is this limitiation stated on the chart? Just curious.

sqvision Note that the current version of the departure he flew is the ROCKY1, while his route (as confirmed by ATC audio shortly after he picked up his IFR clearance) was the ROCKY9. Any place you can easily retrieve the chart online is going to show you the current version of the procedure; the ROCKY9 expired after the 1801 AIRAC cycle (January of 18), which means he flew this flight several months ago. I can't easily access the old ROCKY9 chart for you, but it's entirely possible that the old procedure did not contain the note for pilots to maintain 250kts or advise. Also, maybe Greg will confirm this, but looking at his PFD on climbout, I'm doubting he was just jerking the yoke all over the place -- the gain/loss on speed and bumping around of his attitude seems to suggest he was going through some level of turbulence. I don't want to speak for other people, but it seems like any ATC that's been doing it for awhile and/or has pilot experience is going to expect pilots to slow down a little bit when they start getting bumped around (and ATC was clearly aware of the turbulence, as he advised P1D and other pilots to expect it). Just my thoughts on it!

This was filmed in October 2017. At that time there was no speeds...as I recall.
