One of my favourites is the birth of Dionysus, the greek god of wine. Zeus got a mortal woman preggers, his wife Hera found out and disguised herself as an old women and told this women that is Zeus was really a god he'd have his 'true' divine form. The woman, curious convinced Zeus to show her his true form, he did so and then she died from it. With her dead, Zeus decided that to save his illegitimate son, he'd need to carry him, so he took the unborn child and sewed him into his own scrotum.

I recall seeing a way of making gods that I find quite interesting. You start out by making a god whose domain is related to the theme of the adventure. Then, you make a god whose domain is the opposite, and one related domain. Then you make a god whose domain is the opposite of the second god’s related domain, with another related domain. Then you repeat this two more times, but instead of making a sixth god, you give the opposite of the related domain of the fifth god to the first god. Now you have a manageable pantheon of five gods, each with two allies, two enemies, and no way for any one to make an easy grab for power.

Honestly, I wanted my homebrew setting to be more chill about LGBT+ folks, cuz my bi ass wants some escapism too and what's more escapist to someone like me than a no big deal approach to representation? So I made a good chunk of my pantheon and mythical figures LGBT+. Hell, last session I had a festival traditionally held at the longest day of the year that celebrates the love between the goddesses of the sun and the moon. Got another divine couple where one is the god of poisons and the other is a nonbinary deity of medicine and healing. Poison god heard the healing deity likes bright colors and pretty things, so he made the poisonous plants in his domain brightly colored and beautiful. He also gave this deity as much control over the plants and venomous animals as he could, and that's why some poisons and venoms can have medicinal benefits. Their love story was my favorite to write because I took a lot of my favorite story beats from Greek Mythology (Eros and Psyche's Beauty and Beast dynamic, Hades and Persephone's dark and light aesthetic, an interfering parent as the antagonist, Orpheus and Euridyce's journey through the underworld, a trickster helping out) and put my own spin on it. I'll post the full story if you're curious, I just didn't want to bore you if you weren't interested. Sorry for the rant, let me hand you a potato *gives potato*

I love this intro I'm dying trying to catch my breath ! On an other note, those are actually some great advice, I was finally diving into religions and gods in my world, those are good questions to help guide the creation of pantheons but also of any kind of characters, the whole "Choose randomly a character and make a story" over and over again 'tIl you develop an actual character is a very good one.

This was actually really helpful, my part's cleric is trying to dig deeper into his relationship with his god (Tyr) and the party has been coming across various NPCs deticated to one god or another as well as other members of my party looking for a god to worship and this video gave me quite a few ideas on how to make the D&D pantheon in my homebrew campaign setting more satisfying. Thanks a lot Davvy! Your content is entertaining and often gets me new perspectives on things from D&D I often write off for one reason or another. Both from your videos and from your comments section.

I literally roleplayed Tyr for my paladin player last tuesday. I had the idea of making the oaths a momentous scene so when he got to level three I told him the pergamin the party stole from those pirates was actually a ritual to summon a god for the purpose of receiving his oath in person. It is the only solemn moment in the campaign so far, my players loved it. My advice, try to make a big contrast. It almost didn`t work, but the fact that the prior scene was of the party being kicked out of an inn made the oath feel way better than how I actually portrayed it.

I spent the first :25 of this video listening as Davvy candidly pulled back the curtain on some very intimate (and possibly still tender) details of his life, and the next several minutes reflecting with great empathy on what I'd just heard... Davvy, I'm so sorry you've had these experiences; I'm so sorry you've been misled/mistreated by those who dared judge you/your journey under the false guise of "God's Mouthpiece"; and I'm most especially sorry that you've been led to any conclusion other than, "God dearly loves me unconditionally-- just as I am today," and, "God wants relationship with me--so much so that He allowed Himself to be nailed alive to a tree just to prove it." I love you man. I love your spirit and I love your heart. And know that I'll be praying for the Intimacy of God's Love to be made manifest in your life (and for forgiveness for those that--well-meaning or not--gave you false information about your place in God's Heart...) Peace be with you.

The Order of the Stick web comic dose a good job of having a pantheon who is involved but not too involved in the world. The War God series by David Weber dose the same. Both equate to a mutually assured destruction if the gods interfere outside of giving power to there followers which is how the dnd world works anyway.

I play my gods as a kind of magic insurance company. The commoners give the shred of magic power they have to the gods by praying, and the gods then concentrate it and give it to a cleric to help those who need helping. You might pray to a god all your life without ever needing help from a cleric, but if you ever do need it, youll sure be happy to have prayed enough to get the help.

I usually prefer not to give gods complex personalities, they're not people, they're concepts made manifest and their existence basically begins and ends with which concept they represent. The most human god in my setting is the Raven Queen, seeing as she was originally mortal

I'm slowly but steadily putting together ideas for my own campaign, but I've yet to even think about the possibility of a pantheon. This video's got a lot of great points, and I think I have a solid way of how I want to approach designing my pantheon now. As an example, a lot of magic in my world will be centered around emotions, so having the gods play into that would be a great idea. One of the emotions a god of mine would focus on is fear, but he'd also be related to similar things like death. As such, I'd imagine that the common folk would be rightfully terrified of this god's intentions and capabilities. However, he'd communicate often with his servants, and they'd know that he actually comes across as a bit of a caring buffoon that's constantly worried that he's messing up his godly duties. The best thing I can equate him too would be Steve Buscemi's performance as God from Miracle Workers. Giving the gods an actual character like this I feel will help build my world in interesting ways. Once again, thanks for the helpful content, and I hope even my ideas can help others too!

Alright, now that I've finished the video, my tips: Greek myth is an amazing example to draw inspiration from. They have dozens of gods, but the important ones, the ones that everyone prays to and sacrifices to are the 12 Olympians. Start with a small number like that as the gods that people think about on an everyday basis, and then if needs be consider more. Plus, that can be an excellent source of division in your pantheon. Hades is definitely as powerful as his brothers, but as lord of the dead he doesn't get a seat with the rest of his family up on the mountain. Thinking about the few important ones outside of the popular gods who get all that sweet prayers and attention can set up entire campaign arcs if you like a divine game

I like the idea of the reality of the gods being ambiguous. In my campaign most people believe in them, but can't get specifics, which causes a lot of conflict between the various sects. Celestials answer all the gods' mail and refuse to say whether or not they exist.

What a perfect timing, right now I'm working on campaign and I'm trying to slap together some sort of pantheon. Not sure what sort tho. Shall I go with one or multiple gods? How many, just few or hundreds of weaker ones? Present or illusive? I'm in need of inspiration and ideas, so feel free to share yours, it would help me a lot. Also great video Davvs, intro was gold :D
