Alternative to the power of 35 Step 1: Roll a nat1 on a stealth check, falling face first over a table with a closed door behind you Step 2: Hobgoblin comes through, having heard you, sees your butt rolls a nat1 and falls in love with you Step 3: Stand up, showing the hobgoblin that you are a male dragonborn sorceror, he becomes angry at himself Step 4: He takes a surprise attack from your ally who did NOT roll a crit fail for his stealth Step 5: He pushes them off and comes towards you, ready to hit you, but rolls another nat1, seeing your cloudy eyes flecked with yellow lightning strikes. Step 6: After he drops his weapon and reaches up to hold the side of your face, just go with it and reach up too. Step 7: Shocking grasp Nat20.

Daniel Payne As someone who started to play recently, it's something that is much easier to understand once you actually do it. Spells can be pretty complicated, but for melee/ranged characters the fundamentals of "hit the bad guy while avoid getting hit" is pretty straightforward.

In terms of Impractical uses of combat, I remember one time our Paladin made a deal with her god that basically negated all falling damage... once. And ooh boy was that a good move. We were fighting a Charnel Colossus, big fuck-all pile of corpses fused together with necromantic magic, and one of the party members had the brilliant idea to use dimension door on the Paladin... to teleport her 600 feet above the colossus. Between the impact and smites, so many dice were dropped it took half the damn thing's health away in one go. So now we refer to an impossible gambit with ridiculous odds and incredible upside as the "Meteor Paladin Plan"

Cool/funny story: One of our players was playing a dumb as dirt orc fighter who thought he was a wizard and was using muscle magic. He had a game he called "rock" where he and his opponent would take turns smashing people in the face with a rock. The loser would buy the drinks. So I got a great idea. I took him to a bar and before every drink I would get him to shout "New friends play rock!" This went on all night long drink after drink "New friends play rock!", "New friends play rock!". A couple of weeks later in a different city we we were attacked by a group that was attempting to steal the macguffin we just recovered. A wizard in the group cast charm on our Orc "wizard" in order to git him to hand over the Item. The Orc walked over to him reached into his bag and shouted "New friends play rock!"

how I look at classes are long melee and mid-range classes...usually, a fight will devolve into a simple 2-3 rank formation by default becuase logic(not necessarily a straight line but still)...and I usually explain this to my newer players that the position and knowing your position is an early noob friendly tactics knowledge to be able to pick class and position easier...example; melee row blocks enemy movement and hit thing very hard, also tanks away from the rest. barbarian, monk, fighter, paladins are melee they want to stand first(fighter type may cause exceptions but roll with this.)Druids(shapechanged) clerics(above x level) mid range is classes that can range or melee but don't excel in any type to place them first or last and usually have the mobility to stop flankers and or assist any place that needs help. pc, in midlane, can choose to try to position themselves early in there preferred places like a cleric getting closer or a ranger getting back but they are best to be flexible. rouge, bard, rangers,(some types of warlocks)clerics, fighter, druids. long-range is those that die too easily in melee but can dish out spells. they should be behind melee to help themselves not getting bogged down and not killed. warlocks, sorcerer, wizards I usually tell new players that 1 a good party is one that works just like a good doctrine is one that just works..and that what I say ain't law but a recommended starting point when playing out combat. in tactical combat, you should do what works best or feel best, but basic tactics like formation, flanking, basic ideas like hit and run, or shock and awe can go a long way as long as the party is working like a team.(it also helps that as a DM I am way to nice to my players becuase I don't want to scare them away, doing things like warning them before a session starts that this time I won't hold there hands and shit will get real because I made it harder them usual to test the water and their skill or be owning up to my mistakes even if those mistakes make an encounter childishly simple.)

It's not just disadvantage if youre shooting someone within 5 feet: its disadvantage when youre shooting, if there is any enemy within 5 feet. Reasoning being that if anyone is in your face it'll be quite hard to succesfully shoot someone far away with a bow. Comparable to how its harder to score a goal if someone is defending on you in any sport basicly. "Aiming a ranged Attack is more difficult when a foe is next to you. When you make a ranged Attack with a weapon, a spell, or some other means, you have disadvantage on the Attack roll if you are within 5 feet of a hostile creature who can see you and who isn’t Incapacitated."

played a ranger once who just strait up lit a mages component pouch on fire at the start of what would be a hard fight. the GM looked at the character sheet, looked at me, and then just had the mage give up. the guy had options, but once his component pouch was destroyed he was going to loose. so unless your GM is a dick, removing a mages components is indeed a great option.

Noob here , in the beginning of my first campaign I have some questions. So looking at the damage of some spells vs weapons , weapons almost seem pretty underpowered at later levels. For instance firebolt deals 1d10 damage and a greataxe 1d12 however you need to be in melee range. On level 5 the barbarian can attack twice and damage dealing cantrips get doubled damage dice. Seems fair so far. But cantrips delt either 4 or 5 times their damage die on max level , while melee classes can still only attack twice. Are spellcasters really that much better than melee builds , or am I missing something ? Like do enemies on average have way higher elemental resistances than physical ? And also If the way to boost your damage with melee , is to just find better gear , how much bonus damage would the strongest weapons you can find deal in comparison. Thanks in advance.

As a person who has been plagued by the same doubts as you, I hereby provide my answer to this connundrum. It's all in the modifiers. Imagine a wizzard shooting out their firebolt, ready to dish out 4d10 damage, and a fighter, who makes four attacks with, let's say, a longsword. The dice amount to 40 maximum damage for the wizzard and 32 for the fighter. Assuming, however, that the fighter has maxed the Strength stat, we have a potential 52 maximum damage (with a +5 modifier on each attack). The true edge our fighter holds, becomes even more apparent on the worst case scenario. Assuming all the dice rolls as a 1, the firebolt amounts to a sad 4, while the weapon attacks still manage 24 damage. All the martial classes take advantage of this modifier usage, leading them to balance out the spellcasters. Additionaly, even those who don't attack more than twice have features that otherwise bolster their output (i.e. barbarian rage bonuses, rogue sneak attacks, paladin smites). To conclude this little essay, the only problem with using actual weapons is the need to find/make magical or silvered ones to bypass resistance to non-magical attacks. Otherwise, they usually are very reliable damage dealers.

WAY late to this party, but to add to what the previous respondents said, there’s also no saving throw vs. slashing/piercing/bludgeoning damage, so melee is reliable vs. “save or suck.”
