They do this so Xanathar doesn't fly into a murderous rage and disintegrate the entire guild at the "murder" of his pet fish.

That's the strategy I came up with for a Beholder: Summon Dust Mephits to surround and blind it. Teleport next to the ranger and ready an action with my dagger. Get the (probably last) mephit to get the main eye to look at us by getting it to chase it with that antimagic cone. Arrow and dagger both get launched into antimagic eye. Watch the Warlock slam jam its stupid face in.

I've got a beholder NPC in my game called The Collector. He came to the sudden epiphany that his optimal chance of survival was by being as civilized as possible, so he took all the gear from his lair that was dropped by adventurers he had killed, went to a big metropolis city, and opened up a magic item shop, and has amassed quite a fortune as a result. He's still a bit quirky - his other interest, as well as his namesake, is that he likes to bargain with interesting folk. He has acquired a taste for the arts, and as such will offer adventurers (PARTICULARLY those of uncommon races, or with wings, etc) a sum of gold in exchange for allowing him to petrify them for a contracted amount of time, to be put on display like sculptures in his shop/gallery. On a side note, depending on how you run your games, this NPC can make a really cool save/load feature if your players want to swap between a couple characters once every few months :D

Geezer here... Tried mirror thing long ago. Ouch. It went like this. We had a large mirror a cavern with a bunch of B sized entrances. When the B entered a bard lets out a performance. "You see Master". We hit the lights and bouncy boy sees itself in the mirror. Along with the party rogue on one knee, in reverence to the reflection. Main eye fires and the B charges, bite is its only remaining means of attack. Rogue dodges. B hits the mirror, fails some roll. Would have carried through with its movement for the turn. Instead flys into a giant barbed spear anchored down and braced. A weighted canvas tarp was dropped with grand timing. "Never use a net kids, like you, they can see through". Dropped a lot of rock on it. Wizzy used denigrate boring a hole through the stone and rubble to the beast. Ugh started shoving a special prod, copper wrapped shaft 10 foot long with temporary enchantment to bring it down to a bearable weight. Core about 1/2 a foot thick, solid lead. A little zippity zap, Bs last feeling were of a molten lead colonic. Game on.

How to cheese a Beholder with minimal effort: You will need: A ranged weapon, someone who can cast *Darkness*. Step 1: Plonk a projectile into the Beholder. Step 2: Cast *Darkness* on said projectile. The Beholder can't see through magical darkness, and its' eye-rays have a "That you can see" targeting criteria. (Everyone ignores sight targeting criteria on spells and abilities) The Beholder can attempt to use their central eye, but that will only cut a narrow slice out of the darkness. A narrow slice in which their eye-rays are useless. You have rendered the Beholder powerless.

  • @fangsabre

I mean. You could always just cast blindness on them if you're out of their sight. Keep that caster in full cover so every time the Blindness wears off just use it again. It effectively makes the beholder completely defenseless since even the main eye would be blinded

You mean to put the projectile on the beholder? Becouse I can see a Beholder having about 2 ways of dealing with this. First, Just fly away out of range inside his huge dungeon and remove the Arrow later Second, have a Minion cast Wind Wall (I don't know the name of the spell, I'm translating from my lenguage) to deflect all arrows and non magical projectiles before the start of the fight. The only real way to defeat a Beholder Is to use a LV 20 sorcerer with Wish spell to teleport One about 200 meters from you and the party, then use as many Meteor storm as you can and hope it his enought to kill It before he gets close enought to use the central Eye or before It runs away.

it's something that I'd also like to mention but technically their eye beams are magic. so if they are looking directly at you with its main eye then it kind of cant hit you with its beams so it has to either aim at someone else or bite you. so it's not a bad idea per say to just get into melee range if you can reach it and stay directly in front of his eye while the casters/ranged classes stay behind some sort of cover to block the beams and have additional support.

It should be said, however, that Beholder's insanity and paranoia often leads them to be far easier to deal with than their intelligence may suggest... Because they might be so busy reinforcing all the tiny air vents with magical death traps incase a druid might crawl through... that their secret base might be quite obvious as a result. That is just one example... To put it another way: Beholders are their own worst enemy.

I've killed two beholders so far. How you do it is make a mixture of ash, salt, chill powder, and sand. Give some to everyone and throw it ar the beholder in all directions. We blinded its main eye then the wizard of the party use an anti magic field. Then it was a game of how many arrows does it take to kill a beholder.

For would be DMs out there a Q: Evard’s black tentacles: “tentacles rise up primarily from behind and under, restraining it in place so it cannot rotate, forcing it’s anti magic eye to look only one way (or if you can rotate it up, perhaps with the aid of a prior cast of telekinesis) and each smaller eye restrained in place, preferably directed to the same direction as the beam.”

SO when running my first campaign (which sadly got cut short) I decided to make one of my big bads a Beholder who led and international syndicate with vast resources. Though my players never encountered him in person (only deducing his identity with some help), I did come up with whole backstory. Which was that basically the leader of this previous syndicate (who was also a Beholder) suffered a tremendous loss in trying to use a war to take control (from the shadows mind you) of both nations...only to have it fail and have those nations broker a peace treaty and become allies. Taking this failure really hard, this parent Beholder dreamt of another Beholder who was mocking him and acting like this was all one big game instead of serious business. Thus the parent Beholder inadvertently create his own nightmare which then Usurped him and took over the syndicate (with the fate of the parent I'll leave as being unknown...for now). What's different about this Beholder is that while he is still paranoid megalomaniac who trusts no one else, he creates and builds these "friendships" and alliances with other power-hungry dastards and entities and then works to pit them against one another first and foremost before him. In fact, he sets them up to begrudgingly cohesive enough to work together, but never enough to trust each other. That way, if one group or leader targets him alone to try and take power, they risk the others intervening to try and build a better reputation with their Beholder boss. It also means if one does manage to take power, this whole fragile and orchestrated syndicate will fall apart, meaning if the Beholder isn't in charge of this whole grand scheme, no one is. Also should he lose any of his lieutenants or captains, he always has contacts on hand to replace them, butter them up, and put them against each other. He doesn't mind his if "trusted" officers try to outdo each other or even murder the other...so long as they don't mess with his overall plan. Granted of course, this isn't full proof, and his fatal flaw is that he sometimes enjoys these criminal inner power-plays so much that does divert the main focus away from his longer-term goals. Also, this said power-plays within his rank that he set up is like a Soap Opera for him to help take his mind off the crippling paranoia and malice virtually all Beholders feel.

Beholder fighting tactict: assuming the Beholder can't see in magical darkness, or at least it's stalks can't, toss a dagger or shoot an arrow into its back & cast darkness on it when the Beholder is facing away from you. Other option, cast darkness on one of the stalks. The darkness should envelope all but the main eye, potentially giving the stalks disadvantage

I got a funny about that one time when me and my party for the first time did battle with the Beholder. Because of there superiority complex they really don´t like insults, so what did we do? We got out two most tanky players to piss it off so badly it went "F´´k strategi am killing these assholes!" Which got it to focus only on those two while the last 3 of us set up the plan. We tricked it into a Killing zone as we called it and then we basically dog piled the Beholder by flanking it on all sides and used all our heavy hitting combo attacks to finish it off in one go. We almost got TPK´ed but it worked in the end. Use this strategi only if you guys are sure it will work. We only did it because it was the final boss fight and our characters would be gone after it ended so we had 0 to lose really. But we will never do this again if it does not have a good shot at working.

I find this kind of funny for the simple fact that me and my group has already fought a Beholder and have one when not even dying. Seriously our Paladin got hit with four not one not two not three but four disintegration rays and still lived. I was adjourned at the time so pretty much I tried staying out of the way of that main eye and cast as much magic as I can at it. Are rogue just shot crossbow bolts at it in the two clerics just kept everybody healed. The barbarian was able to get a few hits as well. And seriously this thing was throwing everything it got at us tried to freeze me in stone 5 times. And guess which Beholder that was xanathar himself try the take us on and we succeeded by making him pretty much retreat I mean technically since he's xanathar he can't die but the DM did make him Retreat once his HP hit zero and the only reason why he attacked us in the tower of the Mad mage of all places is because he wanted to capture my wife for exchange of the goldfish that recently died. Ya.

If you can remove it's ability to float out of reach (grappling hooks, maybe?), the simplest solution is STAB STAB STAB. You can't unmagic a giant axe to the face, after all. IIRC, the eyebeams can't affect you inside its main eye field, so unlike with many high-CR baddies in DnD, being right up in its face can be the safest option. Worst case scenario is that your DM rules that you destroyed its main eye and it no longer has an anti-magic field, thereby allowing the eyebeams again. Then at least your spellcasters can take potshots from behind cover with their full repertoire again. Feeblemind is good too, if you can get it to stick, but I wouldn't count on it. Lastly, I think Slow reduces the number of ray attacks it can make, so if you can't keep it in melee, this spell could help keep you alive.

We came across a beholder with all of its eyes sewn shut in an underground vault. The party wanted to move on but I kept tapping it's cage and asking really agitating questions to it in a semi mockish tone to the point that it got so pissed off at me that it ripped one of its eyes open and escaped its prison cell and ran off. Now I have a beholder out there in the world that is very thankful of me but I'm pretty sure he's going to return and vaporise me at some point.

Don’t forget if your a punchy boy with a non magical form of flight, it’s actually best to get right up in its main eye for fighting because while in the main eye, yeah you can’t use magic (not much of a problem for the Fighter), but you also can’t have magic used on you. It’s eye beams would be fizzled out by its own anti magic cone. Truly a beholders greatest for is a beholder, even if it’s the SAME beholder.

So in one of my campaigns the druid in our party tried to come to terms with one and tried to befriend one and utterly...almost succeeded with the beholder stating "hm...you drive a good point for being so beneath me; however, but I see no pleasure in dwelling with you." one failed dex save and a few low rolls and she died. We killed the beholder and made a grave for her (I can't remember what we put on her tombstone but it was really cool and sweet at the same time). The DM then latter told us after the session that the dc was one of from succeeded, we came so close to have a beholder friend.
