I tell my grandkids that I was around when "The Great Bass Battle" took place in October of 2000 and 19. They say, "Grampa, was life different back then?" Their eyes widen as I tell them how we didn't have as many G's in our internet, and how sometimes we had to wait while things "buffered." Then I showed them how Charlemagne Bear Tooth had this really short headphone cable, and tell them to eat their vegetables.

I think you're a better "composer" for bass than Davie. Davie is more of a funk player and his lines don't work as well for solo bass. You're able to fill up the sonic space better and not even need drums.

@@raksh9been saying this for ages. Ik your comment is old, but does anyone here seriously believe davie504 is better than this actual musical god? Davie is good. In trying to stay objective, he’s clearly mastered the slap, and rocks the fuck out of the bass harder than I could imagine. But he feels….soulless. Like he learned how to play entirely from technique videos. His music, even originally composed, seems bland and corporate, as though he’d be hired to make the bass line for TV commercials and jingles and such. Still a musician, and a damned skilled one as I’ve seen… But Charles “The living riff” Berthoud is on an entirely different playing field. His technical skill is equal to literally all of the best bass players I’ve ever known about, including davie… The MAJOR difference is that Charles has the fuckin music in his soul, man. You can literally feel it in his playing. It’s so melodic and intricately composed and just…beautiful. You can tell it comes from the soul and from the heart, NOT from the fingers, which is how most of Davies music sounds (imo). Charles, if there’s any chance you or somebody close to you sees this, I love you dude. Your ability to let the music touch and flow through you, like a live wire/conduit for the language of the universe (vibrations, aka harmonics and sound) makes me feel less alone in the world. The fact that through this, I can concretely know that I am not the only one who feels it…makes me so freakin happy lol.

@@jacksoncordray1593 It's funny because I came to Charles after watching Davie. D is a super proficient bassist, and Charles is not just proficient but deeply musical. He understands harmony, rhythm, and 'feel' and has the technical skills to express it. What is also funny is that through the internet, people like Charles and Davie can be recognized for their skills and talent, whereas in decades past, you needed a combination of good luck, skill, marketability and a connected manager. We will never know the unsung virtuosi who were hobbyists in the basement decades ago.
