'The history of the world is but the biography of great men'. Thomas Carlyle's words represent the dominant view of history for centuries; history's trajectory is primarily shaped by the actions of powerful individuals. On the other hand, historical academia has diversified beyond this concept, emphasising the influence of social groups and movements. However, controversies surrounding statues and individuals have raised questions about the reliance of the public understanding of history on individuals. In turn, this House asks: should we reject the 'Great Man' theory of history?

    There are various definitions of 'greatness' and 'strength'. They're, especially in figurative or rhetorical use, ambiguous words. In this quote, though, it's possible to take Roosevelt's words to define greatness as some combination of ardor, resolve, and propsensity to action. Notice that these three notions don't include accomplishment or prominence. That is, a great man need not be effectual or recognized, and a man chronicled in history books need not be great.

    This is what debate looks like - although of course we only see a part of this one. But in real debate, each side gets the chance to put their case without interruption, so that we get to hear it fully, before cross questioning, and everything is done in a civilized fair way. It's completely different from a TV "debate" between political leaders, where everyone shouts over everyone else and the host can be biased as well. I wish in politics, especially before elections, we could have real university union style debates like this.

    I was actually in attendance at that debate and I can reassure you that it wasn't anything sinister - Dr Starkey had a cough and had to stop for a minute whilst somebody got him a glass of water, so due to time he moved on to the Tudors.

    Great ages and periods in history are more often associated with a great man than they are with a specific date. No one know what happened to or anything about Greg the Baker 2,000 years ago in modern day Israel. We know what happened and think of that era and place because of Jesus.

    We tell children how unique and limitless they are in potential but also that the individual really doesn't matter, that they are their immutable characteristics, their sex (yes that's not something 'assigned' by doctors at birth as if on the toss of a coin), their skin colour and their sexual proclivities and that the events of their lives depend on large structural forces? That they are born guilty or what's worse labour under the weight of institutions designed to prevent them from successfully reaching their potential.

    I wonder if many of them there are on joined up writing yet? ✍️ And is it true there's a masters or postgraduate in spelling now in Oxford? As its quite a thing now in Oxford to take in students that are really just planks and even give them professorships for such things as Origami, basket weaving and toy making ; all for the virtue of levelling up or something 🤔
