After Eddie's death, Paul came out to say, "Of all the guitarist's I got to play with, he was my favorite". Considering the massive amount of talent Paul has played with in his career, that says a LOT about Eddie Van Halen. RIP fine Sir 💗🎶

Eddie always has a smile on his face and looks so comfortable with that guitar. It looks weightless and his motions are so smooth and efficient. A real guitar master.

Paul’s band is thrilled here - like a bunch of kids. Eddie was at the peak of his powers around this era - looking great.

I didnt realize how much I miss Eddie until I watched this. Paul Shaffer 's kept real good time on the keys and didn't step on Eddies guitar parts. It sounded great! I miss the days when bands actually played instruments.

Even with my eyes closed, as soon as I hear the first note 🎼 from his guitar, I immediately know it’s EVH. He will never be replaced. 🤘🏻💔🎸

My favorite all time guitarist. Glad I was part of those decades when rock was rocking. What great times and music. Rip Ed never be forgotten.

Every time I've seen a video of Eddie playing, and I do mean every single time, he's had a big, BIG grin on his face. You just know that he and his guitar were made for each other. Talent and joy like that is so great to watch. I wish I was 1/10th as good at ANYTHING as he was with that guitar.

I was so in love with Valerie, it blew me away that they were together, I remember saying to myself, Eddie its bad enough you are the greatest guitar player at the time in my favorite group, but you have to take my girl too! I loved both of them.

Yep, I also had the hots for Val, especially when I first saw her in the 1970s during her days on One Day At A Time.

I remember watching this, 1985. Stationed at Ft Ord CA. watching this on a small TV in a barracks room, Saw VH at the Cow Palace in 84 before Roth left. Your music was in Egypt, Korea, Panama, You got us thru tough times away from home, Rest In Peace Edward Van Halen, you gave us the best years and we will always be grateful ......

Completey at ease with complexity. And gracious; does not even sweat.

Paul's keyboard was on vocals that night. As for Eddie, he could walk into any setting and take it to the next level and beyond.

Eddie makes it look so easy. Always smiling, keeping cool, and just doing his thing. Notice the other guitar players trying hard to keep up. Actually, the others were very good. Eddie interacted with them and brought out their best. I just can't say enough about Van Halen. Much respect, Eddie. You are missed.

I also liked how Paul handled the substitution of keyboards playing the vocals melody.

I watched the whole show from start to finish and there is a reason why David Letterman is the King of Late Night Television back in the day, and that is because he was just so damn relaxed and honest with everyone he met. He took everyone at face value and let them be themselves. Eddie and Valerie were so at ease and you knew they were just being themselves. Miss you Eddie, they'll never ever be a greater guitar player than you!

@@hippydippy Jimmy is a distant and I do mean distant 2nd place. No one living or dead has been better with a guitar, advanced what a guitar could do, or was as good both rhythmically and solo wise as Eddie. Period end of story. And I'll add, no one will surpass him in my lifetime and likely ever.

I always knew way back in the late 70's, that Eddie Van Halen was one of the best guitarists to ever exist...... I was lucky enough to see them in 1978/80/81 in Houston👏👏👍..... I sure miss Eddie a lot! RIP 🙏😇 EDDIE 🙏😇! You are truly very missed by all of your fans.....

Seeing Eddie play and smile that grin is so amazing the music was incredible I got to see him live in August 2015 with David Lee Roth what a thrill of a lifetime at Jones Beach theater

Eddie looked like he was having fun!

As I look around in 2023 all our heroes are gone. And Eddie was one of them. I thought he would be around forever but sadly no. Loved his smile and obviously his guitar talent. Thank god for youtube to help ease the pain. Love you and miss you sir.

Forget the playing (that as always is beyond this world) - it's amazing to see how humble he was.

I remember when Eddie & Val first got together, they looked so eerily alike. Not just both having big feathered 1970s-1980s style hair, but their faces were similar. They were like twin brother & sister. You can also see the similarities here. Perhaps looking the same was part of their attraction to each other, both conciously & subconsciously/subliminally. At least they got one child out of the pairing.

Dave was a jerk towards Valeri. And I wondered why they put that one guitar player on the pedestal? Eddie was respectful to the band but don’t you know he was thinking man these guys can’t play for crap?

I love Eddie and miss him every day. And Steve Jordan is in my top 3 favorite drummers. This video brought many good memories!

Eddie was the man with the magic , I'm just happy that we could all share in his talent.

Eddie was diggin the organ...feels so good.

I’ve loved Edward since high school. Wore out all my VH tapes in my car stereo twice. Read everything about the guy I could. Two things said about him after he passed really resonated with me: when Steve Vai compared Eddie’s guitar playing to a ‘symphony’ and when Satch said he thought Eddie, so famous for his lead playing might have been even better for rhythm guitar. Wow.

Damn. That place was rocking like I'd never seen! What fun. And you've just gotta look at Eddie, not an ounce of cynicism or conceit, he welcomed everyone, and it pulled the best out of Paul and his band. Thanks for posting this. Really enjoyed it.

Paul and bandmates were living a dream (to be able to play with one of the guitar greats of all time, while he was still in his prime). You can see it was a lot less significant for Ed, but he was polite and gave the band respect and turned the focus back to Paul Schaffer at the end of the song, pointing his hand to him for the applause. That was a humble gesture that not many other rock lead guitarists would've done back at that time.

@@le_th_ I wish i was the bass player on that night with Eddie, no wonder that guy was tripping ! My head would've been exploding while trying to keep the bass part tight with the band lol. Paul and the boys experienced something they'll NEVER forget as long as they live

Eddie is just so relaxed, the other dudes are really working hard and appear a little nervous playing next to such an extraordinary talent. Imagine the drummer, going ok - but trying to be as good as Alex. Tough gig that one.

Alex also played with a double bass drum set up with a 1/2 to full beat delay at times which gave him a listening to advantage. Some drummers consider it cheating. This drummer in Pauls band did a great job filling in with a single bass!

WOW...the 2 of them together, GREAT CHEMISTRY! I've seen him perform twice, back in 81 and 16...like fine wine, he got better with age and you can tell he LOVED what he did. Bless you Ed, you are so missed.

I got to see VH on the 1984 tour in Charlotte NC. I will Never forget that show. It blew my mind! Eddy was a true Giant of Giants. Miss you man!

This must of been the highlight of these men's lives. Can you imagine jamming with Eddie? They are all having a great time.
