David Hewlett: What Would You KEEP From Atlantis? (Dial the Gate)

Ойын-сауық

STARGATE's resident science and tech geek is David Hewlett, who played Dr. Rodney McKay for five seasons on Stargate Atlantis (in addition to guest appearances on both SG-1 and SGU). So what would David like to have from the lost city of the Ancients ... not just a prop from the show, mind you, but a living piece of Ancient technology?
In this conversation with "Dial the Gate" David talks about the show's great props team and the workmanship they crafted - from Z.P.M.s and M.A.L.P. drones to the Stargate itself. He also explores an idea to share a screen-accurate Zero Point Module prop to help a fan celebrate her late husband.
This clip is from Dial the Gate's full-length, 100-minute conversation with David. Watch the full interview here: • 074: David Hewlett Par...

My personal favorite was when David was reading fan mail. One letter railed his character and asked he (David) be replaced. At the end of the letter, David answered the fan's question, politely saying he would not be quitting, not be getting fired and would be on the show through the end and then thanked the viewer for their question. (hehehe)

I worked on Atlantis in VFX. We handled prop references. I never knew there was an Easter Egg in the inscription, though I do I remember people leaving all sorts of "calling cards", that could potentially even get some in legal trouble, like embedding cross-franchise characters into shows where they weren't supposed to be, somewhere out of focus in the background, or a shadow silhouette of someone identifiable, but if someone were to point it out, artist could play dumb and say they're imagining things. Often done for laughs internally. Like a dailies gag. Someone puts a joke in, then skips a day. Their shot gets approved and oops. It's on air next week. One supervisor used to put his name onto everything (not on Stargate). There is a zoom into an electronic device, and his name is on one of the chips. Things that are on screen for 1 frame, and you'll never catch it, but he gets to brag about all the shots where he managed to sneak his name in. On Atlantis I did shadow monster and forcefield effects in S01E03. The coffee shot was hard. We did it in CG, and it didn't look right. Back then, a typical CG workstation had 2GB of ram, and doing convincing fluid simulations on that is hard, on TV budget. So, on set VFX sup (John) made a rough plexiglass cast of the body and they poured real coffee onto it, in front of a black background. And that was composited back in. I was on set during one of the hallway sequences. That section was made out of swappable tiles, so they could make a short stretch of set feel like it was longer. Walk a few paces in front of a dolly. Then they swap walls. Reset, and walk the same couple of paces again, delivering the next set of lines. Set was beautiful. The main area - it was like a amusement park. Loved being at Bridge Studios.

Out of everything Stargate related I'd ever want to be it's pretty much always been Stargate prop designer. These people have a brilliance and aesthetic insight that just blows pretty much everything else outta the water. Having Carter's intelligence would be nice too, I guess. But simply being the type of person that can dream up SG's sets & devices would be enough for me.

Ok, soooo why did the Atlantis team never find any of the atlantean hand guns/weapons anywhere in Atlantis? Like while Ronan’s gun is great….. I’d trade it any day for one of those Atlantean hand weapons! This kind of ties into my comment above about how I wish the unknown atlantean tech would have been a little more primary to the episodes. Like they just bring in the hand weapon in one episode it gets used and then just disappears from the story line. I needed more!!! 😭😭😭 As always, thanks for the work you guys do!

Atlantis being my hands down favorite of all the series (and i’ve honestly watched each series in totality many many more times through than I would like to admit) my only disappointment was that they didn’t expand on more advanced Atlantean technology. But I do understand the limitations of the technology of the time of production too. Like At that time the tablets the atlantean teams were using were pretty ahead of their time considering touch tablets at that time. But now looking back, the tablets used on the set are soooo outdated compared to tablet today. So something I would love to see if they reboot Atlantis would be to integrate much of the newest tech of today into the show to see more “advanced” atlantean technology. At the time it came out I know Eureka did a lot of this too. But I do understand props and the technology is probably the hardest thing to come up with a create while staying within the bounds of physics. I just felt that the atlantean technology could have been more explored and less time building the background story lines of offshoot story line. But honestly I’m just splitting hairs at this point. As always, David, thank you sooo much for your roll as Rodney McKay. Amanda tapping as Carter and you as Rodney inspired me to get my physics degree and it has shaped my entire life. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for you two! Thank you!

that sounds like a cool deal. i think it would be cool if the jumper could also recharge in the stars like the good old Destiny, but i doubt it could meet the shield strength and power requirements to handle, being that close to a star without melting it. maybe if it were thicker and had a more robust design it could get away with it for a short term power absorbing maneuver. and at that point it might have to be an FTL drive, a hyperdrive might require more concentrated power reserves to withstand hyperspace. although i have theorized about this or something like this myself as a weapon, sort of a weapon, in stargate we have learned that if your vessel is too close to another that is not ready for reentry into hyperspace that it could tear apart any ship if the wormhole is close enough to the other ship. so i wondered if we could create a small vessel that was meant to bypass shields of another bigger ship through hyperspace window for a short burst window and then the ship re-enters another window to drag the other exposed ship into the hyperspace window given it was close enough to the exposed ship, effectively tearing it apart. so it's not exactly a weapon, but a hyperspace window can be used as a weapon as it also fits within the lore of the show and can even be observed when we see the Destiny jump into FTL when those drone ships were attacking it, if the drones were too close to the destiny, while they were shooting at the destiny, not ready for a FTL window that the destiny creates as the drone ships are ripped apart when the destiny takes off. kzread.info/dash/bejne/iIZlqY-tdbWeldI.html

I'd take a puddle jumper, hands down. They may not have the range or speed for interstellar travel, but we've seen that traveling to the next planet over in the same solar system can basically be an overnight return trip. I'd love to be the first person on Mars, without telling anyone about it, but plant a Canadian flag somewhere it can be seen by the Curiosity or Perseverance rovers to confuse the hell out of NASA. If I had to restrict myself to something smaller, a personal shield would be a nice thing to have while riding a motorcycle.

@@hurtigheinz3790 No, my point is that a ZPM would make much more sense since you could more or less power the whole world totally carbon free. That would give us the opportunity to completely overhaul our whole energy sector and thus giving us a shitton of extra time. And even if we would use it differently, we could use it to produce a shitton of Antimatter, gigatons of hydrogen and so on. We dont have to use it in a "Scifi" way, to make full use of it and we dont have to make FULL use of it at least we can make a bit use of it and that in a positive way.

SG-1 ran from 1996 to roughly 2006. The MALP was seen more in the earlier stories for the most part. But also keep in mind that for a long time, many of the major satellites were running with chipsets 15+ years old because it takes a LONG time to certify hardware for space (or at least did in the 1980s and 1990s) and probably longer for military gear. For the time, for the range of environments it had to face, the MALP was reasonable. There's also a limit to budgets - if you need a unit that goes through a gate, reports back, does some tests, and sends video, and it works... the money could be spent on Daedelus or fighters with jump capability, etc. Why replace it if it does the job? Now, to look at it compared to tools 17 years later than the last part of SG-1 is of course going to see new developments. Even Atlantis probably only went to about 2011 at most. It's one thing for us to build small robots that do one small job for a short time and they can be light. But anything multi-mission, multi-environment, and needing to be reusable and robust is going to be bigger and more clunky. You can't replace the bigger hardware with smaller hardware in all cases - the lighter stuff has weaker batteries, tends to be single use, and the shielding is lesser so they won't last very long. (I was just watching a NASA doc about cube satellites and their utility and the limits of their range of missions they could tackle...)

It's really awesome to find out that the actor is a tech nerd sci-fi fan when most actors in sci-fi are the exact opposite. Probably explains why he was able to portray that character so well. I know acting is acting, and there are professional actors capable of really being whatever character. But having a small kernel of that character inside yourself makes you so much more capable of putting the mask on and making it believable.

My theory on the ZPM's is there probably was a lab, however it was disabled when they fled the city. And the only thing left to find is an empty room. And it probably was a isolated part of the city. Also what was the eye thing behind him. It looked like Walle or something...

I would think the puddle jumper or personal shield would be a keeper. I don't think they had a ZPM factory...I think they lobbed the crystal through a black hole and then picked it up on the other side after it absorbed all the vacuum energy. It explains why they ran out of them when the Wraith took over and they had to submerge the city. If the city had a non stop factory, they could have stayed indefinitely in Pegasus...but something blocked them from accessing how to make the ZPM...thus they had to leave. God bless~

ZPM's.... understand it was made in probably a dimensional room but what shocks me is that wasn't the FIRST item they searched for in the atlantean database, not even finding the how, where, and not even plans for production were found??!! This was something that should have been resolved or provided during the series.... it was a wonderful journey/series!!

If Amazon were smart enough (and maybe they are), they would include a few stand out characters like McKay! and Sheppard, and a few characters from SG1 as guest starring roles with a new team story line of SG, which would strengthen the franchise, and to not do a full reboot. Do what the Next Generation did and tie it to what came before with a few guest roles, like seeing Spock or Bones or Scotty and the klingon Kor show up for a couple of episodes of TNG. Give fans what they want to attract new and old fans! Star Trek Discovery also ties in Canon in its stories to a degree using Spock and Pike. You can upgrade the ship designs and effects to modern movie film-making but still tie to canon. Amazon, please look at and review how new Trek kept Canon in mind and continued with new stories. That is the secret of success!! ... and the best way to create the biggest fan base for new shows going forward.
