I just read the book. Rookie wasn’t an insult. The rookie title was referred because there was three groups in that race. Rookies, Veterans, and the professionals. He was in the Rookie group

The sun saw goggins running and said “fuck that! I don’t want that smoke.” I hear the moon is still scared to show its face.
The story behind this race was crazy! Goggings used to go to work and then train at work with 3-4 layers of thicc clothes so that his body and mind can get used to extreme levels of heat while training. He did this routine for several months before the race which made the 'Heat' part of the race very easy for him.
