Cliff is a classically trained musician. When you come from that background, you know what chords and notes correspond with what human emotion you want to target. So in Metallica, he targeted that sinister emotion and it made the band very heavy. Which is hard to do considering how fast they played.

Yes, Megadeth were the last to be induced into the big 4 chronologically ( Metallica then Anthrax then Slayer and then finally Megadeth in that order ), and that was well after they released Peace Sells...but who's buying, made the famous videos for the title track and Wake Up Dead which became singles and then MTV started playing the intro bassline. That was the album which catapulted Megadeth and Mustaine's musical stature.

I'm 35 and even as a teenager in school, I LOVED history. I enjoy hearing about instances at given times. I don't know exactly why. It's just... You can't only hear the story. You have to account for the atmosphere at the time, the culture, everything! So when you hear about things that are revolutionary, you might not see it as such. . But when you put it into the context of the era, you'll see. I'm an elder millennial and I LOVE early thrash, punk, grunge, everything. My own mother is who introduced me to 80's pop, grunge, and some fucking awesome music. Just...damn, I'm so glad these bands exist!! I wish I was living in an awesome era of rock music. But sadly, I live in the era of computer music. I am not against using a computer if you live in an apartment or something. But when you are a singer and have 15 writers writing the most basic shit for you to go out and sing, it's FUCKING EMBARRASSING!

It's funny how East Coast Anthrax were compared to the other Titans. Dave Ellison is talking about a band that gets out, looking all healthy and rich, and I missed who he was talking about, but he got as far as "Pea Coats" and I was like "Anthrax". The lead guitarist went to my high school. You always saw Scott Ian around seeing some band or other. Had it not been for them, I think New York would have been a little alienated from thrash.

Bullshit. Just because Cliff died at a young age, you assume he was better than David Eleffson!! Fact is, Burton played on Kill em all which in fairness is a heavy guitar sounding album where any decent bass player could play along with. Master of Puppets and Ride the lightening have a few good songs where the bass stands out but he wasn't god. Steve Harris was 17 or 18 when he wrote The first Maiden album bass lines and lyrics and Killers was full of difficult bass lines. Burton gets too much credit for being this bass god. He was a good bass player.

@@1977moonchild1 "you assume he was better..." whole metal industry where guys like Frank Bello and Ellefson think of Cliff Burton as one of the biggest bass players. Cliff Burton played bass like it shouldnt be played and inspired a lot of people that a bass can be played fast and brutal. He showed the world that bassplayers could have a big place in a band if u just played like Cliff. Stop talking bullshit.

  • @1977moonchild1

Analkande Svert Stop talking shit mate. If you want to hear a bassist who showed the world and its children how a bass should sound like in a heavy sounding band, look no further than Geezer Butler. You go and listen to their first album Paranoid. Butler was years ahead of anything Cliff could have dreamed to come up with. A different class of player. Then there’s Steve Harris from Iron Maiden who undoubtably is the most influential bass player in Heavy metal. Burton was a great player for Metallica and accompanied Ulrich and Hetfield perfectly in what they did back in 82 to 86. Eleffson when you hear his isolated bass lines from the early megadeth albums like Peace sells.. you hear how talented he is. And as bass players go, and there’s many of them throughout the decades from the fifties onwards that have paved the way for such players.
