Love Bowie, he is a legend. Did you know, that this was influenced from our beloved Bee Gees?! Bee Gees influence on David Bowie`s Space Oddity ! Released on the Philips label 45 years ago ,July 11, 1969, it was described by Melody Maker’s Chris Welch as a “Bee Geeian piece of music and poetry,” while Disc And Music Echo’s Penny Valentine noted how “Mr. Bowie sounds like the Bee Gees on their best record - New York Mining Disaster”. Like "New York Mining Disaster 1941", "Space Oddity" is about a trapped man who is doomed to die, and the song is similarly structured as a series of statements addressed to another person. "Space Oddity was a Bee Gees type song," Bowie’s colleague John "Hutch" Hutchinson has said. "David knew it, and he said so at the time, the way he sang it, it’s a Bee Gees thing." As Marc Bolan explained: "I remember David playing me 'Space Oddity' in his room and I loved it and he said he needed a sound like the Bee Gees, who were very big then".

Bowie was very creative and equally an artist and performer as much as a singer and composer. His persona was that of a chameleon, always interesting. I think the harmonies are his own vocals. The synthesizers add to the extraterrestrial vibe. This song always gave me eerie vibes. "Something's wrong", "Here in my tin can", "My space ship knows which way to go", "Tell my wife I love her very much". Imagine being out in space and knowing you're in trouble, yet he seems to be at peace, "I'm feeling very still". Space flight is not a bus ride! Many ended in disaster. Major Tom ain't coming home. Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield did a great version of this song from the International Space Station and Bowie thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for your reaction. REM - "Man on the moon".

I've definitely seen that this song exists before, but I think I've only ever heard the very beginning of it until just now. The music, lyrics, and music video are all very interesting and crazy, but, also, very cool. I love the part in the music when the guitar would pick up and there was clapping; that part sounded awesome! I agree. It's very cool and interesting to know what was going on in the world when different songs were released so that we can see how that influenced a lot of artists. It's something that I should think about and try to notice waaaaaay more than I do. I think I've only heard two or three songs from David Bowie before.

This song is interesting, in the personal style of David Bowie, with its peculiar extravagances. Thanks Chad for this weekend reaction! P.S. I also really enjoyed the David Bowie duet with Freddie Mercury singing "Under Pressure" together!

This is probably my favorite song from Bowie. I could just never get into much of it, like the Ziggy Stardust stuff. I appreciate and recognize his talent and importance, especially later with the dawn of MTV. Yes, lots of "space" songs were done in the 70's. Personally, I would pick our brothers and "Edge of the Universe."

A bit of trivia. Bowie had an eye injury as a child and his pupils are different sizes so one eye looks brown and one blue. 👀 Commander Hadfield's version for your own interest. 1M+ views. kzread.info/dash/bejne/fZWDpZudkdHeftI.htmlsi=EXL7vMIBmd-svnLu

Some people really love Bowie, I just can't get into him really. The only time I ever really did at all was in the movie he did called "The Laberynth". But most of his music always seemed too far out there for me. Im not saying he can't sing, but the lyrics and dress and stuff were just, wow, too much. To each his own, if he's your style, good for you, that's good that you found your groove.
