Interestingly David Bowie was always into black women.. he even had a relationship with a black singer named Ava Cherry(?) while he was married to his wife Angie

The irony of his Soul Train performance is that both songs were funk rock songs instead of soul. For Bowie at his most soulful, you've gotta check out Win and Can You Hear Me? from Young Americans. Absolute classics. It's interesting that David is known for doing mainly pop. His '70s stuff ranges from progressive folk to blues rock to heavy metal to glam rock to jazz rock to punk rock to disco to soul to funk to ambient music, in that order. Some of his '80s material is pop, but mostly new wave and disco with blues rock and glam metal solos. In the '90s, he was about jazz rock, r&b, and ambient music, then industrial rock. A bunch of that stuff mixed together in the 2000s and 2010s. It led up to his final album Blackstar, which sits between jazz rock and progressive rock and is somewhat of a commercial enigma. He didn't have a ton of songs that were pop outside of singles, and most of his music is unconventional. With all due respect, Elvis wasn't on this track. David's people pitched the song to Elvis for him to do a cover, but The King turned it down and sent David a note wishing him luck on his Isolar Tour. David kept it for the rest of his life. This could have been an Elvis Presley song, but it didn't happen, unfortunately. Bowie did all of those vocals himself. If you two want something a little different from the soul tracks I started this comment with, I recommend songs like Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud, Time (live Hammersmith 1973), When the Wind Blows, and Slip Away. You'll be stunned! Keep up the great work! 💙

Watch Bowie ripping MTV a new one in 1983 for refusing to play black artists videos. Bowie's "Young Americans" album from the year before is a true soul album. Bowie discovered Luther Vandross on that album x

Yes, and look at MTV today, it's virtually unrecognizable. The beginning was when they presented Michael Jackson's Videos from Thriller.

Bowie constantly reinvented himself and his music. This was his Thin White Duke period. It's amazing to see him so self-conscious in front of the audience and such a disappointment to see him poorly lip-syncing his performance to the studio release. He deserved better. "Sampling" hadn't been invented yet, so he was "inspired by" soul music, as many UK artists were. So many UK bands embraced American blues and soul music, and they were the ones who introduced it to white youth in the USA, a very odd circulation of culture.

Luther Vandross sang backup on the record. He tells a great story about being in the studio one day when a scruffy looking white guy walks in with a song he'd written for Bowie. Turns out the guy was Bruce Springsteen and the song was It's Hard to be a Saint in the City.

Mr Bowie was out of it, mostly, at the interwiew, BUT, we have streetcorners in our town too hih! Bit' blurred performance, but bravely done. Hazy times for mr. B. But great song from brilliant album.
