That solo from Moonage Daydream was really the first time I "heard" electric guitar... and it changed my life. It was so simple, powerful, confident and musical I didn't even know what to do.
Have you seen this one? That's Fucking 'rock and roll.' kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIBto9erXaqXqcY.html

The genius of this solo lies precisely in its simplicity. Almost anyone can learn to play it, but it takes a lot of work to get it right. Many people start speeding and adding licks, and the solo quickly becomes similar like almost all other rock solos. This isn't just a solo from a rock song.

Just found this. Ronno was, and always will be my hero. He had an inner beauty that also came across in his guitar playing. Bowie unlocked his true talent by a projection of sorts, and I'm quite sure he loved Mick in some way. Approx. two years of the most mind shattering glamrock and roll we will ever see. It's obvious that Bowie was singing about Ronno- and the Spiders, I wonder if he was a little in awe of what they had created? But back to this video, I hadn't heard of Michael Casswell. To say he nailed this is a bit cheap, he did much more than that, he made it live again. To read he has subsequently died himself is a real tragedy.. R.I.P. Michael, Mick and David.

Jimi Hendrix - Machine Gun is otherworldly. It transcends guitar playing. The ending with the bombs 💣 exploding and jets flying over and then the bombs exploding and people screaming the cries of war…what guitarist has ever even came close to being able to replicate Hendrix’s control of feedback and dive bombs from Machine Gun or the Star Spangled Banner? No one has even come close. I’ve heard SRV try it, Steve Vai…Van Halen’s dive bombs were 2nd best but he also had a Floyd Rose and better equipment. Don’t get me wrong, this is one of the greats but Jimi on Machine Gun is untouchable imho. He was more than a musician and guitar player. He was a force of nature that channeled the sounds nature. Wind, British Ambulances, bombs, screams, his wah playing is also untouchable. But Ronno was one of the best for sure and this is one of the best but I wouldn’t put anyone above Jimi. EVH’s solo on Live Without a Net and Jimmy Page’s solo from Dazed and Confused from The Song Remains the Same with the violin bow. But Ronno was for sure the man and kicked ass and I especially love his MKI Tone Bender, cocked wah and Les Paul tone. Easily one of the best. Something about that MKI Tone Bender, it just sustains forever.

Excellent job!! That second chord in the chorus - is that a D with a B on top? Mick plays it differently in the live version it seems looking at the 73 farewell show footage. Looks like he makes a barre chord at the 7th fret but with the B played on the low E string (not that it's possible to clearly make out in the mix).

Good call - assume that's what's being played on the acoustic guitar part for the studio version. I'm still not exactly clear what Mick's playing on the live version. As i said, it looks (grainy film from 1973!) like he makes a barre chord at the 7th fret but with a B played on the low E. Notwithstanding the fact that Mick re-recorded some of the guitars day after the final show. Definitely worth listening to Visconti's commentary to the DVD.
@paul10018

D/F# can also be played as a (partial) barre by fretting strings D+G+B at seventh fret plus A string at ninth fret. If you play the partial barre with your first finger and hit the F# with your third, your thumb will naturally rest over the neck onto the sixth string at the seventh fret (the B), but is just dampening that string. I bet it's that.
