Beckley and America were England-based for quite a while, from '67 to '72, and played years on the circuit, just like Bowie. They definitely knew each other.

I always thought that 8-line Poem and Bewlay Brothers by David Bowie on the Hunky Dory album reminded me of America's first album with the acoustic guitars. Hunky Dory was David Bowie's most country, folk album. Then I found that they were both recorded in the same year, produced and engineered by Ken Scott at Trident Studios. They HAD to know each other. I knew then there was a connection.
