Real question; why do surgeons do that?! I remember being prepped for my surgery and the doctor finally comes in and goes, “So do you want to do this procedure we discussed? Or do you want to do this newer procedure we’ve never ever talked about? It’s showing good results.” ...Well gee DOC, then maybe you should have mentioned it in the multiple appointments we’ve had in the YEAR leading up to this surgery today! No I don’t want to do a completely new procedure I know nothing about and haven’t prepared at all for!!! I’m also not feeling as confident about you cutting me open as I was literally 3 seconds ago!

You couldn't interview me with Attenborough there, as I would pivot each question into a biology question and re-direct it to Sir David. Quickly they would just cut out the middle man and start asking him directly.

What Steve said about his surgery happened in such similar tones to me. Mine was a cervical spine disc replacement and I was supposed to be out as they rolled me into the theatre but I wasn't. He's right. The tools of their trade are so scary when all laid out before you. Chilling. I've never been more scared in my life.

As a young nurse, my theatre training way back in the 1970’s was in the orthopaedic theatres …. Yes it really was like a joiners workshop! Drills, saws, screws….l was horrified!…. And orthopaedic surgeons always seemed to be gruff angry shouting men….unlike obstetrics where they were a softly spoken and gentle lot.
