Besides his throat surgery, I’d say the biggest change was because of the improved song writing. The music became much more diverse. His voice had to change as well.

AFI is like 3 different bands combined. 90s AFI has a specific sound, 2000s AFI has a specific, and 2010s AFI has a specific sound. Each era sounds so different from one another, but none of it sounds bad

I think graduating from high school something to do with it. I don't know anyone beyond their early 20s who really like AFI. They're more like a Boy Band now, not that there's anything wrong with that.

I love both the old and new, I love old punk, hardcore, post hardcore, alt rock.. a great majority of their stuff. Even when they've gone in more of a poppy direction it kinda reminds me of The cure and a little bit of depeche mode mixed in with a lot of other 80s-90s goth influence. Daveys Xtremist project is fucking incredible.. though I'll admit that last one the end.. it definitely went in a entirely new direction that I'm still trying to get used to and who knows.. maybe I wont this time.. or maybe itll remind of another era of music or an artist I like and Ill connect it to that.. but who cares? while I think most fans would have rather had them stick to one style alone.. I think it's amazing that they're still making music after all this time.. and what's more is that I think they're doing it for themselves and thats pretty fucking cool 💜

@@-master2135 You got me, the tat thing is like a special secret society type thing, with others that they can over come physical pain. I saw a doc on this woman who has backed out a lot of her body, it signifies something to do with pain. But IDK why Davey did it. I mean his was amazing art work. I mean its like he wants to forget about those great times of AFI. Now he wants to be this fashionista and sound like prince. I don't get it. I think AFI should have always been hardcore. Then if they wanted to change their sound. They should have changed their name. Because as an old school fan myself, who started listening to afi in 92 till about 2007, when I think of AFI I think of hardcore and energy and angry. After STS they started slowly going down this fame roller coaster of fashion and their music not sounding unique but more like every other shitty band on the radio. Not only that, you get these new fans who shit on the older fans because most of the older fans say sell out. Which I completely agree. But the new fans love that word evolve. Evolve is getting better sounding great. Not going fourth with a new genera of fans. Mostly emo. They catered more to newer fans, and basically screwed all the hardcore and punk fans. Even today I think their sound even with their old school songs live, have no energy no anger or screams behind it. Then you get those fans saying, well he had throat surgery. Well, thats bs because he still screams with xtrmest. So, I try and stay out of debates with the newer fans. Because their maturity level is laughable and they start name calling or bad mouthing and taking it personal. Rather than just saying well we agree to disagree. So, I will always love old afi. But I refuse to listen past STS. I am tatted and sleeved one arm with almost all art work of AFI, such as black sails album and art of drowning along with All Hallows art work. I would never want to black it out, even when fans go, OH AFI MISS MURDER. That is when I just want to scream and say, you will never understand the true and real afi. II mean bands like bad religion, rancid and pennywise made this band. They all stayed more or less true to their sound and are famous. But AFI went a totally different direction and fame. Yet I would listen to those three bands over new afi any day of the week. I think Bad Religion keeps getting better so does pennywise. I listen to rancid once in a while. But not a huge fan. Not a fan of nofx either. Anyways, sorry for getting off the topic. Peace.

@@willbirkin666 Ya what you say as it was more than just music but a family bond. We all felt that way. Especially, back in the day. When Davey was hardcore and we went on stage with him. That all went away and a new genera of teenage emo fans came in and tried to squeak like Davey. Worst show I ever been to was at Long Beach Convention center. All these new your fans with their t shirts. It seemed anything but an afi show. That was 2009 and it was recorded live. Worst show and last show I ever went to with afi. I knew the band that me and all my buddies loved was gone. But i will always have the jack o lanterns. What I find funny is fans talk like they know afi but they were never their from the start. That's why I get passionate and laugh. Then people disrespect me first. But you do that I will fire back even harder. Because they weren't even born and have no idea what it was like and never will. People trying to say Im stuck in the past and need to grow up. I am grown up. I'm doing very well for myself. Its funny just because Im am a punker doesn't mean I haven't grown up. People are quite funny and their assumptions. But I laugh at these new fans, they act like they know davey and why he does what he does.

They matured and wanted to continue being creative - making the music they wanted to make. That's another reason they have so many projects. People who claim to be fans of a band but "only like the early stuff" are fans of those albums, not of the bands. It sucks for you and many others who are unable to grow as fans and appreciate new music and new sounds. They're artists, let them create their art. It's great that what they release does not make their earlier albums disappear, huh? Personally, it's hard for me to listen to punk rock nowadays, ever since I went through puberty ~20 years ago and was no longer a moody child.
