    I wrote it wrong..., in my first comment, I ment to say, "i've never had anything YOUNGER than 2002". I'm very much into the older generations of bikes and always steer clear of eletronics and fuel injectors. You'll probably remember, if not, at least heard of, "Douglas", of which I had one with the 350 Boxer motor. But the first bike I had (that I learnt to ride on) was a 197cc Francis Barnet, but I never had it on the road, (I grew up on a farm) and used to pretend I was the world's best Moto- crosser, out in a field shortly before it was due to be ploughed! I had many falls and many repairs, but it all prepared me for life in the workshop, and on the Road. I subsequently took my Driving-test on a BSA Barracuda 250 Thumper. Oh, the good old days!

    Thanks, obviously thanks to the magic of video editing I can condense the work down considerably but they are very basic in construction. Also, Daves been rebuilt in the recent past so nothings seized in fact a lot of the fixings weren't particularly tight.

    Hi, just as I was expecting, this is gonna be interesting, especially if this video is anything to go by! You seem to have hit just the right amount of detail to keep us all interested, and as you said, there'll be more detail in the rebuild, and if there is then anything missing,..., well, that's what the comment section is for... right? Am I right in presuming, HDs are your favourites, they certainly are mine. However, if it has two wherels and no BMW badge on it, i'll give them ALL a chance. At the moment, i'm mostly astride a 1500 Suzi. Everything was so sturdy and simply made on the bikes of this era as, was also the casse with my BSA Thunderbolt from the Seventies, but they all worked well even without all the electronics, that seem to be necessasary on todays bikes! I've never had anyting older than 2002 and don't intend to!

    Thanks Steve, hope it lives upto your expectations. I've had Harleys for over 30 years though I'm not keen on the more modern ones - post 1980s. Basically, I just like motorcycles with one or two exceptions 😂😂 Since my early riding days in the 1960s I've had mainly old bikes and covered most periods from the 1920s onwards. The Harley WLA was the one bike I always wanted right from first seeing one in 1969. I've had 3 now so know my way round em reasonably well. Cheers.

    So simple in construction. The only special tool so far seems to be the allen key for the wheel fixing to the hub. I love the fuel tank, i had no idea of the extra capacity bulb. Now, what's your method of collating and memorising all the nuts, bolts and washers and their positions for the rebuild?

  • @old-n-Goldie

    @old-n-Goldie

    3 ай бұрын

    They are very basic. Some special tools are needed, watch the next installment, but not many. At the moment I'm keeping things in sub assemblies so a lot of the fixings go back in their holes. Also, quite a lot have been replaced in previous rebuilds so aren't original or even correct in some cases. The parts book is great as it shows every fixing and even tells you the size and thread. This is my third WLA, so I know my way round em reasonable well now. Thanks for watching.

    Very interesting. I had no idea of the petrol/oil tank arrangement. What gauge of spanner’s are needed on Harleys, AF, UN, BS, Whitworth? Or are they similar to what I see on many old Brit strip downs, where it’s proper mix & match affair! lol. One thing that strikes me on this & the Brit stuff, is how robust the engineering seems to be, no fiddly small size nuts & bolts, like on Japanese stuff, but I could be wrong on that score. Looking forward to the future instalments.

  • @old-n-Goldie

    Thanks Martin, glad your enjoying it. Harleys use UNF and UNC fixings so AF spanners are used. Having said that, some of the reproduction parts have the correct thread but then have metric sized heads - bizarre 🤔 🙄 They do tend to over-engineer stuff but that's great.

    I've been thinking..., and yes, it did hurt. What is always very apparent at Oldtimer meet-ups, is the amount of "old blokes" compared to youngsters..., what's gonna happen to all these old, and exquisite maschines, when us oldies have all kicked the bucket? Somebody has urgently gotta do something to get the kids out from behind their computers! What are your thoughts here? Have you done anything to secure the future of your bikes, for when you close your eyes for the last time? Sorry for being so dismal and depressed, but when I think of all the love and care that we have spent and still do on these maschines, it sickens me a little to think how the "future of our past", might well fade away to nothing or end up at a brokers yard, or even as a heap of rust in the woods. Omg, I need a beer..., yep, that's right, I wanna go drown these negative thoughts!!

    Wow Steve, you've certainly been thinking about this problem. Getting younger people interested in motorcycles is just getting more difficult all the time. Certainly in the UK its far more difficult to begin your driving life on two wheels rather than four. The complexity of obtaining a driving licence for a bike puts most off to start with. As for what happens to my pride and joys after I die, I've no idea. As time goes on this is just getting a bigger problem as more of us 'collectors' "shuffele off our mortal coil". Sobering thought.

    @@old-n-Goldie Motorcycles are constantly being sold, so there is a continuing and constant supply of new, and coming-back riders..., but their interest in bikes is mostly only superficial and not "a way of life" or a hobby, that stays with most of these new "bikers" like it did/has done, with our generation. I only have to look at my offspring and their friends, to confirm that. It's just a way to avoid ULEZ or traffic jams on a sunny day, when commuting. But on the other hand, motorcycles are not as simple and easy to work on for the casual owner, as they used to be, many need to be attached to a laptop to work on them, the bikes are a complex eletronic set-up that needs a little more brain than we needed, and at least here in Europe, not as many have the opportunity nor space to work on and/or customise a bike, living in high rise appartement blocks or Silos as my father called 'em. There is of course an exception, that being with the HD fans, where there is still a great interest and customising scene keeping the oldtimers alive, but what about our great British brands or even the Italiens? No, the scene has changed and i've gotta accept that. Oh well, I suppose when we're gone, who cares what happens after us...? Yeah I know, I obviously do!

  • @old-n-Goldie

    @old-n-Goldie

    3 ай бұрын

    Thanks for watching Frank. These engines tend to run pretty hot so your legs are quite warm anyway. Any leaks from the exhaust weren't noticed in that way either by me, when I owned it, or Rob the current owner. However, it was prone to the odd backfire on overrun which, with hindsight, may well be down to the exhaust leak. Cheers.
