Had this segment on VHS back in the day. Classic. They edited out a bit where Dave says to his colleague, "I heard that Ronald MacDonald was gay." Sure, it was un-PC back when, but hey, could be true.

Snopes looked into this, and the Production Assistant actually had the onions ready, and put them in the car while the guy was in the drive through. I was bummed when I read that.

I didn't know that CBS fired David Letterman. I'm glad he was able to get a job at McDonald's so he could still make a living.
Its amazing how well this holds up almost 40 years later. Excellent stuff.

That guy still frequents the local drive thru's, on occasion but is probably more low key about it...he'll never get Dave again ...just that hollow voice promising instant gratification but delivering a sub par alternative .. most times

Man, I love these. Was always a highlight on the late show. Dave was so quick - interacting with the customers - trying to push their buttons. Hilarious! And I can’t believe that guy actually went and got a bag of onions…

One of my favorite skits Dave ever did.
Bet McDonald's wouldn't give you a sick day if you swallowed a straw.
This makes me miss my 80s childhood. Even though it's 93, it has more the feel of 87 or 88 with the cars, hairstyles etc.

Not only did this make Dave's day, but it also made the day for the poor girl there with him and millions of other people. Thanks Dave Letterman!
This and the Taco Bell drive thru bit are some of my best memories of Dave. I remember just laughing so hard when this came out and I'm still laughing at it today.

I love it when Dave did this sort of thing to mess with people.

I've always adored David Letterman, his sense of humor is absolutely fabulous! He has a genuine way of encorporating the general populous in to his fun & antics!

This is why I started watching Dave's show back in the summer of 1984. He was off the wall, unpretentious and unpredictable. No offense to Carson but whacky late night humor was new and appealed to us teens.
