80's and 90's? He totally reinvented his playing in the 2000's and, in a sense, started a second career, which has been just as compelling as his first. The guy has been growing in facility and wisdom for decades, without much stagnation at all.

I've been a drummer for almost a half century now, But I was a rock/prog drummer...I never heard of Weckl until I saw him in a drum battle with Gadd and Vinnie C maybe 10 years ago, . ...I was staggered by his chops...He's an amazing Jazz drummer and in that battle; it was really between him and Vinnie...Love Gadd But technically Those two were beasts! I've been spending more time with Jazz over the last 15 years, just because; they are truly the best drummers; technically.

You should watch both Dave as well as Vinnie when Obi Wan Gadd sets his groove in. What happens next is both of them asking Steve rudimentary 'questions' so to speak and The Gaddfather answering them back. They portray, he concludes. Afterwards both admitted to be on their toes and bringing their a-game because of the One who was sitting in between them. Gadd just showed once again that chops never outclass groove. In this case they all posses chops AND groove. Amazing video.

Not only was Weckl a great drummer, he also was a pioneer in drum sound. I've met Dave 3 times and he was very kind everytime.

I saw Weckl playing with Oz Noy a few years back and his playing was mind blowing. I was sitting a few feet from him when he played a solo and I almost couldn’t believe my eyes and ears. His flow around the kit is just legendary.

His command of the instrument and his ability to play what's absolutely perfect for the music is nothing short or remarkable. Had the opportunity to meet him several times over the years -- most recently saw him at the airport in St. Louis. Unfortunately, none of those encounters were remotely warm nor friendly. He knows he's one of the best and thus, in true BR-fashion, not humble whatsoever. What a shame.

I owned the Ford Drum Company for 21 years. We were at NAMM for 8 straight years. In that time I met many famous drummers. Many were quite nice. Sadly, some not so much. Never met Portnoy. Peter Erskine, Neal Peart, and the aforementioned are top 3 when it comes to ego and meanness.

Some celebrities are unfortunately rather unfriendly (to put it nicely) as soon as there are no cameras on them. Sometimes it can be downright shocking when someone you know from the media and you just give them a friendly nod stares at you with deep contempt. Never meet your heroes, or you may find out that they are quite aloof apart from public relations.
