I think there were pros and cons to the culture of male friends ripping the piss out of each other - I still have friends where we do that, the banter is fun and it builds character and resilience, like Brad says. But think how emotionally stunted the generations who came before us were - our dads, uncles, grandads...and their dads...and their dads haha - because it was never okay to ask for help or expose any vulnerability ever. We're definitely all getting too sensitive, I feel ya. But there is a positive side-effect, that a guy can be honest about something shit going on in his life with a friend instead of...I dunno, suppressing all his fears and frustrations and taking anger out on his family instead or drinking himself to death or straight up killing himself, stuff like that. We just need to get the balance right, innit. :D

I disagree. What you're advocating for is a solution via some sort of therapeutic process. I'm vehemently against therapy when it comes to issues such as feeling depressed. Going to a therapist (or a friend to discuss issues in a therapeutic way), who by no means lives anywhere near a perfect life themselves, to talk about how upset you are almost every day is not the best way to treat the feeling of depression. In my own experience, acknowledging the bad things in my life instead of doing what I needed to do in order to fix the bad things, was only making me feel more depressed. I was depressed until I quit thinking about the issues in my life, and began to work myself out of the situation that was making me feel depressed. We can even see that with a rise in the popularity of therapy, there are higher rates of depression and suicides. Countries that place less of an emphasis on therapy and where life is significantly harder, are the lesser depressed countries. Hard work cures 99% of depression cases in men; acknowledging your feelings of depression keeps you from working as hard. America (where I'm from) is probably the leader of this modern "acknowledge your feelings" thought, it's also one of the easiest countries to survive in, yet it's also one of the most depressed and suicidal. You spoke of our ancestors, and how a lack of acknowledgment for their emotions may have negatively affected them; however, the way I see it is that most of them were significantly happier than we are, and they also got shit done in the meantime. If you're a guy, don't acknowledge your emotions unless it is ABSOLUTELY necessary.

@@NoHaBi02 I disagree with a lot of what you said, but respect your right to your perspective and opinions. Glad you were able to pull yourself out of it. What do you personally do if a male friend reaches out to you and says they want to commit suicide and are severely drained of energy and motivation; do you suggest they get a second job or find a volunteer position that involves manual labour or...? Cheers.

@@RaefonB TL;DR go watch Andrew Tate's views on depression, as they are very similar to mine. I must clarify that my advice mainly applies to men; not women. As you mentioned, I will be discussing this topic regarding men. To be honest, I would not become good friends with a person that would become suicidal as a result of a reason that can be fixed. I choose to surround myself with guys that are good influences on me, as I am to them. None of them would become suicidal as a result of a problem that can be solved, or a problem which does not threaten their lives to an extreme extent. One of the main topics I preach on is masculine excellence. One of the main principles of masculine excellence is never allowing your emotions to control you, or allowing them to become exaggerated. It would not be necessary for you to allow your emotions to take over and become suicidal when some chick breaks up with you; it would not be necessary to become suicidal because you're fat (I wouldn't be fat in the first place outside of rare uncontrollable circumstances that may have caused myself to be fat); it would not be necessary for you to become suicidal because you're broke. Pretty much the only way that I would ever become suicidal is if I dropped these principles and became the worthless human being that sat on my ass all day every day complaining about how miserable my life was, and not doing anything to fix it aside from filling it with distractions due to the fact that I felt depressed. That's why I consider depression to be the ultimate excuse. People with depression very often use it as a reason to not do things, which only keeps you in the position that made you depressed, as I was doing myself. It is the ultimate externalization of issues. The explanation from many doctors will essentially be that there is a chemical inside of your brain that you can't control, which causes your depression; as opposed to what I believe, which is that in most cases the chemical is in your brain because you're unhappy with the circumstances you are currently in, which causes the feeling of depression. My belief implies that the depression (in most cases) is controllable, and can be fixed by working your way out of that circumstance, and into a new and better one; as opposed to what the doctors insinuate: "you're screwed unless you take this medicine that will probably cause more issues that make you more depressed, and go talk about how screwed you are to a therapist every day." I believe that instead of externalizing issues, we should focus on our internal issues, because once we fix our controllable internal issues, we are now more capable of dealing with the external issues. If I was suicidal, I wouldn't want to sit down and talk about what makes me suicidal almost every day. That would only make me more suicidal. You can check out Andrew Tate's views on depression, as his views are very aligned with my views.
