    Both of my parents were broke my whole life, I grew up with hardly anything, and I constantly heard fighting about money. My dad was a great provider and my mom was an amazing mom but both weren’t good with money. I learned from those mistakes and PROMISED myself I’d never live that way. Just today my dad called me to ask for $400 so he could make it to the next week and he’s 66 yrs old and retired. It’s sad, but I am just grateful that I have the means to be able to help him.

    My dad was very bad with money too, made bad choices, had too many marriages and divorces. We never had what we needed as a child and I was determined to live differently. At age 17, I left home and I put myself through college by working full time and going to school full time. Yes, I made mistakes too but I learned a lot from them. Today, at age 69, I own one condo and I have mutual funds. I have an "envelope system" savings accounts within my credit union and I saving each month towards a new furnace (It's about 10-year old) a refrigerator replacement fund (also 10 years old) and so on , When my appliances give out I might now have the full amount to replace them but I will have a very good start. I raised my two sons to be highly financially responsible and they both are - they both had paper routes from age 12, learned to count money and pay their paper account bills each month. I am working now with my 10-year old granddaughter. She helps me roll coins to learn to count in ten's and twenties, and earns $5.00 in coins to put into her savings account. I "gift" her with a $25.00 check at each birthday and Christmas that goes into her college fund. I taught her how to write checks and how to pay my bills, we subtract my checkbook together. I bought her a purse for her birthday so she can take it in her backpack and have a few $1.00 bills in for "spending money." I want her to understand just how money works. Simple things that I think will make a difference. When my youngest son went to buy his first home at age 21, he went to the mortgage lender and the lender said, What are your debts? He said, my school loan. He said what about your credit card debt...my sons said, I have none. The lender said, you will not have any problem getting a loan for your home and he did not. This was at age 21!!

I've got my cash envelopes going... still getting used to that one especially when I'm at the market and forget to get the cash! Doh! Cut up every credit card except for one that we pay off every month. Mostly use at the gas pump, oil changes, vet etc. but slowly trying to transition. But that's the thing... I just don't trust debit cards! Too many creepy people around and at least the couple of times I've had something sketchy happen on my credit card, the bank has called or I've called them and had it fixed. I don't want to change my numbers and stuff on my debit card every couple of months! I can barely remember my passwords for websites! :P

    So there is no doubt that Ramsey’s method works - it’s proven and tested many times over... BUT I can’t get over his “obsession” (not the best word for it) with not using credit cards. There are MANY who shouldn’t use them because they’re irresponsible. But when you’re spending the amount of money he inevitably is, there is money being left on the table by not using credit cards. At some point people should have the self control to use them when living on a set budget.

    If you have the money to where you just pay off the card every month, you don't need the cc and the awards you would get are miniscule..if you don't have the money and use a cc, the awards are worthless because you will pay for them anyway with a revolving balance and an interest rate to match. If you want to create wealth, stay or get out of debt, the studies Dave's company has done verifies that wealthy people do not use credit cards for anything. Yes I agree some people can use a cc and pay it off without a revolving balance. But the data shows that 7 out of 10 people on your street, and in any neighborhood rich middle class or even poor, live paycheck to paycheck, and can barely get their mortgage paid and have credit card debt. The majority of people cannot use credit cards wisely and never will.

  • @drunclecookie216

    @@insideoutsideupsidedown2218 the awards aren't that miniscule. I use them for gas groceries and some bills and at the end of the year I've got enough in cash back rewards for a month of gas groceries and bills. One free month of necessities each year isn't bad. also your analysis that wealthy people don't use them is just false. I have friends who are multi-millionaire farmers who use credit cards for most of their farm equipment as well as gas groceries and some bills. it's more convenient to pay off one lump sum each month than constantly withdrawing cash or updating your checking account for every little expense

  • @JakeThornhill

    @JakeThornhill

    4 жыл бұрын

    InsideOutside UpsideDown With all do respect there are two definitive perks to credit cards if you’re paying them off monthly - rewards (which are relatively small, but could cover a few significant costs by the end of a year) and improved credit. I wouldn’t consider those things worthless. The idea that the majority of wealthy people don’t accumulate debt is just plain wrong though. This is probably my biggest push back with Dave (though I fully understand why he does this to protect people), but there are two types of debt. The majority of wealthy people are in debt, but it’s borrowed money that is making them money. I’d also question his study that wealthy people don’t use credit cards, but I have no research to stand on so I’ll bypass that one. And I agree that the majority won’t use credit cards well, but the majority won’t budget either. They should still be taught. As I said, his system is 100% proven and it’s not me questioning him, it’s just interesting because someone using a credit card with self control is undeniably better than someone not using it. Most people just don’t use self control... Thanks for the reply - really enjoyed hearing the other side of the argument :)

    I disagree with Dave on one point: using a credit card. At one point in my life, I used a debit card too. I now use a VISA that offers cash back and I can reject any purchase that's not mine (happened once in 20 years). I pay it off in full each month and cash out my free cash balance each year in December. Free money is Free money.

    It's not free money, you are paying by over spending throughout the year, even if you are disciplined you will still be over spending by at least 1% - there is also the moral issue which is not brought up enough, your cash back was brought to you by those in a position where they are paying interest. Not a good place to be.

    @CNO on you resume may just list that you don't believe in debt and the prospective employer will be fine with that. You do not need a FICO score to purchase a house, even at a lower interest rate. Its called manual underwriting, Churchill mortgage can do it for you .

    @@ChrisMFlorida Advice might be free but he didn't build a company with $200,000,000 in annual sales by giving stuff away. That's a lot of books, FPU and Every Dollar premium subscriptions. Not to mention the ad revenue he receives for ads we listen to for that free advice. Not saying he shouldn't get paid but it's ironic how his entire organization is built on selling something to someone while he is telling them to stop spending money they don't have.

    @@archiealsobrookii4755 I couldn't care less how much money someone else has but when he preaches about living off of beans and rice to get out of debt, then markets his products to the same person to spend their money on I find that very hypocritical. Just like the preachers profiting off of religion. Let me tell you how great Jesus is and how he will save you, just send me your money and buy my book. With that said I listen to the arrogant guy daily and follow his sound advice, no debt, 6 months of emergency savings and saving for retirement. Doesn't mean I need to like the guy or agree how he is taking advantage of those he his trying to help, so he can "give like no other".

    That is true and it's your perogative to do so. Dave offers advice that fits the vast majority as he sees it, and thats his perogative. Do you think you are entitled to take issue and debate him that your path is better? What are your qualifications?What is your track record? You are wrong in thinking that Dave believes his way is the only way. He believes his way is the successful way for the overwhelming majority.
