Financial Peace University Review | Why FPU Isn’t The Best Solution for Christians
I share my experience in this video review of Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University, and my recommendations for those who are considering signing up or for those who just want to know what I think about Financial Peace University and Dave Ramsey’s view on finances.
I answer the question “Is Financial Peace University THE Money Management Solution for Christians?” Spoiler alert…. I really don’t believe that FPU is a great solution for Christians when it comes to learning about personal finances, money management, and paying off debt. gasps
You read that right. In this video, I share why I don’t agree with Dave Ramsey and what they teach in Financial Peace University, and why Christians specifically shouldn’t use it as their money management solution. I took FPU a few years back and get a lot of questions about what I think about the program and whether I agree with Dave Ramsey or not. FPU has helped lots of people, but I don’t think it should be the solution that Christians specifically seek out. There are a handful of things that I do agree with Dave Ramsey about, but there are plenty of things I don’t like about Financial Peace University.
There are several BIG reasons that I dislike Financial Peace University. In fact, I disagree with Dave Ramsey on a number of money management concepts as well as the general overall things that they are subtly teaching inside of Financial Peace University. This is why I don’t follow Dave Ramsey and don’t promote Financial Peace University. Is Dave Ramsey wrong? Is Financial Peace University bad? No - they have still helped a lot of people. But I disagree with how Financial Peace University teaches Biblical money management specifically. And that is why I believe it is not the right money solution for Christians.

We tried to do the baby steps for several years out of order and kept a credit card account open. We did not get out of debt. We would make progress only to go back again. We decided to do the plan as closely as possible to the recommended steps. This time it worked and we have been out of debt for over 3 years now. Also having credit cards was very very tempting to us. It is like trying to diet and filling your cupboards with cookies. Not a good idea at all. If you really focus on the sacrifice and giving part of their plan it should you avoid a lot of the prosperity mistakes.

I agree! If you're able to set the money aside into the 401k it's a great idea otherwise it's like leaving free money on the table!

Thank you for sharing! I will definitely be sure to not replace glorifying myself with the POINT which is to glorify God with all I do! I’m going through this course right now (so I don’t have a fully formed opinion on it) but I appreciate that you’re sharing this and your with concerns about spiritual health instead of worldly prosperity. I will be on guard. I think knowing for ourself the full context of what the Word says is of utmost importance whenever we are interacting with anybody who is using the word (in any way). Definitely, valid criticism. I appreciate you my Christian sister! ❤

Hey thanks so much for taking the time to watch this video. I'd be curious to know your thoughts on the course now that you have gone through it a little bit more. Again, it has helped tons of people in all walks of life, but as believers we need to be guarded against focusing on worldly wealth and riches over spiritual. Just from your comment, you seem grounded in that truth so I'm sure you have been doing that =D Blessings, Katie.

How did you become a money coach? By learning through trials and books. I know there are some places where you can get a money coach certificate.

Hi John, originally when I started coaching in 2020 I did become a coach after creating a blog, writing about personal finance, and having readers reach out to ask if I would work with them 1:1. Now I have certification as a Christian Financial Counselor through the Institute for Christian Financial Health.

I have never gotten the feeling that he is preaching a prosperity gospel... at all. Just because he references the Bible, he doesn't say that God will give you everything you want in life by following his plan. He says that it is a proven plan to improve you finances and it will help you will be successful with money..... but it's more in a simple minded, down to earth type of success. Dave Ramsey says all the time that his program requires work and that people have to do their part. Also, he talks about tithing and giving on his show all the time and he highly encourages tithing. His steps need to be tweaked and his negative words like stupid, idiot and dumb really need to go. In my opinion, his harshness and condescending attitude in the most un-Christian part of his message.

Thanks for checking out the video. Dave Ramsey and FPU have helped a ton of Christians pay off debt and get into a great rhythm with their finances. I just feel as though there is an underlying tone of promoting a prosperity view of the Gospel. I don't think it is intentional by any means, but that doesn't mean it isn't there. I myself have been caught promoting similar information until the Holy Spirit pointed out how I was making the Gospel more about my own financial well being rather than simply honoring God. I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts =D

I have your video as it popped up with my going to FPU. As a KJV Independent Baptist layperson, I know my faults that call for keeping close accounts to return submission to the grace of God, the LORD Jesus Christ. I can't go back in time to take up on general good advice that one or (maybe) two persons gave me to start IRA when I was 12-13. And my Dad did not counsel or teach me anything, though he shopuld have. Now "over the hill" and still poor by American (or world) standards Ive been following the Ramey Program Show with apprehension. Seeing sort of the prognosis you've alluded to with a couple different reasons you may not mention yet, as yet half of your video to go... A proverb also says, " The way of the transgressor is hard." So even where you show the Ramsey Solutions "version" choice as Proverb 21:5, the word for word KJV is " The thoughts of the diligent {tend} only to plenteousness; but {of} every one that is hasty only to want. Like Proverb 19:2, "Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good: and he that hasteth his feet sinneth." , ----relating that hastening ignorance cultivates sin... Proverb 13:15 "Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard." (concordance search for that verse lead me to this awesome backbone verse also--- Hosea 14:9 "Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.

They only financial difference you have from FPU is the amount of the emergency fund. The rest is all your interruption of what needs to be stressed in the Bible. Here is the truth this financial plan is not just for Christians. It can be taught to all people. You want to quote the Bible or any other book to stress the point being made in budgeting -money management that is fine. However following this plan can help everyone "not just Christians" that are struggling if they commit to following the budget -money management process.

I absolutely agree! My point mainly is that if a follower of Christ would like to take the Bible and Jesus' guidance seriously as pertains to their finances, CHM is not the program to help them do that. But you're totally right - FPU can and does help lots of people who are not followers of Jesus Christ =] Thanks for watching!

Prosperity gospel? He talks about giving back to others too. Perhaps you are more biased than you think.

  • @AgapeInvesting

    @AgapeInvesting

    6 ай бұрын

Yes, he does talk abut giving back to others, but my point is that he puts the emphasis on saving up for yourself first and then once you have your finances figured out then give back to others. Where as Jesus's "financial model" is more the opposite. He says we should be extremely generous even when we have very little, not wait until we can give large sums of money (see the story of the poor widow in Mark 12)

@@AgapeInvesting Sometimes you need to put your own oxygen mask on before you can help the person beside you. May want to examine unconscious bias regarding his approach because he does talk about giving back, tithing, etc. I would say Joel Osteen preaches more of a prosperity gospel.
