Dave is the man that made me realize the importance of having two bass drums, playing on one chokes it up so it doesn't resonate properly like it should. I own a double pedal, but I prefer two bass drums. If it wasn't for Dave I would have never gotten a bigger kit with two bass drums. He's not my favorite drummer, but he is a legend, and is a phenomenal metal drummer. And he made Slayer what it is today.

One of my favorites. Best thrash drummer of all time. Incendiary and propulsive as all get out.

His fills are lightning fast.

Best drummer ever! In this he video he is very young, but his drumming skills are awsome.

There is no 'thrash metal' without Dave.

Lombardo is far more than just a thrash drummer, he has the skill level to be any type of drummer he wants; he can adapt to any style of music

He's the real deal

A huge fckn influ on my playing seen him 8 times with slayer once with suicidal twice with grip inc and once with Mr bungle Dave can play it all Dave charlie from anthrax and Tom from exodus are all huge inf of thrash drumming hands down

I think with Dave Lombardo it’s more about his double bass drum work. Comparing him to weckl is like comparing apples to oranges. Both great at what they do

This is from the Modern Drummer Festival at NJPAC in Newark. It was the year Modern Drummer magazine moved the 2 day festival of nothing but drums and drummers from their home base in Montclair, NJ at the university there to a beautiful theater in Newark. It was very interesting to see Dave there because he felt completely out of his element. And was very honest about it. At the very end of the clip you hear him say "Hold on..." and he was about to go into why he felt so out of place. He knew he wasn't a learned drummer like 99% of the other performers, and it made him uncomfortable. He went on to explain that he knows all these other guys know exactly what note they're playing and can read drum charts and understand time signatures but that he was self taught and just loved drumming. Every other drummer that does the festival year after year, usually comes out and plays a little piece that they worked up. Explains what they were playing, the time signature, different types of rudiments they use, if they were playing 5 stroke rolls or triplets or a swiss press, or whatever, etc. Then usually go on to play along to a background track of whatever famous song they may be known for. Then go on to break down how they came up with the different parts for the song and why, like "the bass player came up with this 3/4 shuffle rhythm, so the rest of just played in to it and I discovered I could play groups of 3 over it... and it ended up being in 9/8 or what have you..." then maybe they would solo and then play some big finish song. And Dave couldn't do that with any of Slayer's songs. He would admittedly say "We never knew what time signature we were playing, or how many BPMs it was and I can't break down any of the songs as to how different parts came together in any technical way" (I am paraphrasing of course) "We just played heavy and fast." And the crowd laughed, cuz they know, this is Slayer. So he apologized for not being "as good as all these other drummers" (his words) or able to explain any technical aspects of what Slayer did. Said what an honor it was to even be asked to perform with all these other schooled and talented musicians, that his mind was blown when he got the call, and actually learned that Modern Drummer wanted him for years. And just hoped that people could be open minded about heavy music and could appreciate how honored he was to be there. And also admitted to being nervous af to have to play in front of so many greats, and all alone as the main focus. MD Fest crowds are known for yelling up to the stage and interacting with the musicians, yelling out questions randomly during the drummers' speaking parts of the show. Its usually pretty quiet while they are up their explaining everything. But when Dave admitted all this and asked for their patience and thanking those who dont love heavy music for putting up with him, the crowd went nuts for him and stood up and gave him a standing ovation, with people screaming out SLAYER!!!!! and DAVE!!!! and telling him how much they love him from out in the crowd yelling up to the stage at him. He was so very humble, and so obviously relieved, but hey..... we are a community of drummers that love ALL drumming. And we embrace all drummers and their genres. And everyone knows just how innovative he was and what pioneers Slayer were. He then played along to, I wanna say Seasons In The Abyss, but I truly cant remember exactly what song. But everyone went apeshit when he was done. And when he sat back down to play out his closing, he said he was just gonna improvise a solo on the spot and throw in some of his go to fills that he again apologized for not knowing what exactly they were, but of course, thanked everyone for having him there and he fucking crushed it. And he walked off the stage to the small and intimate crowd totally cheering for him. He was the hero of the day for sure and as a drummer, for me, it was so cool to see. Modern Drummer has always featured him in multiple issues (as well as Bostaph and any number of other extreme metal drummers, as much as they have guys like Bonham and Peart or any jazz great for that matter or any number of well known session players) and actually had wanted him to do the Festival for quite a number of years before he finally did the show. It really was a treat.

Great story. I missed that MD festival but did make it to two others. I don’t think it was just Lombardo who was intimidated. The wonderful thing about those events is that the artists (some of them) would hang out in the lobby and chat with the spectators. It’s funny…Chris Adler, Glenn Kotche, and Jason Bittner all told me they were intimidated playing the event, and when I met Brann Dailor in the lobby and told him I was excited to see his performance he said something like “Honestly man I don’t even know what the hell I’m doing here.” But every single artist was showered with love and applause. Btw, the morning of the first day of the first MD festival I attended, I took my seat. Few minutes later, a guy sits down in the empty seat to my left. Bobby Rondinelli.

@@flamecolumn very cool. I was at those ones too. With Chris Adler and Brann Dailor. And you're probably right, it's probably a thing with first timers and younger drummers, feeling a little nervous, since there are so many legends that do the shows and have done the event several times. Like Steve Smith, who seems like he did it every other year. But I guess I meant more so with Dave, because he was the only metal drummer in his lineup. They obviously embraced metal drummers over the next bunch of years. Because they did have Jason Bittner, Chris Adler and Brann Dailor. And I know Dave went on to do other clinics after that, so he obviously found his comfort zone. But yeah, that's one of the coolest things about the event is just running into a random drummer hanging out. No egos, no putting on airs, no rock star trips. Just drummers who play drums for the love of it, embracing other drummers. Regardless of status. I met Liberty Devito in the parking lot when I went to throw my goody bag in the car so I didn't have to haul it around all day. Spent a good 15 minutes talking with him. I met both Brann and Chris outside, coincidentally in right about the same exact spot, just hanging out. The year Danny Carey played, I spent practically the whole weekend talking with Jeff Ocheltree, who was his drum tech at the time and sorta famous for having worked with Bonham and Billy Cobham. He was cool as shit. The guy who owns the place I studied at was in pretty tight with MD, and he would get passes to go backstage. I never was able to go, but he did tell me I missed my chance to hang with Danny Carey after the event was over that night, cuz they all sat around hanging at the bar afterwards. But I had gone home by then. One of the coolest things though, was, I am walking around the booths just checking stuff out and as I'm walking, I look up and all of a sudden the guy standing there in front of me says: "ISN'T THIS JUST THE GREATEST THING? Nothing but drummers hanging around and talking about drums with other drummers." It was Max Weinberg. I was like "Whoah"... the interesting thing was he introduced me to his son, who I think was about 16 or so. Who knew he would go on to play in Slipknot? Man, I loved going to those festivals. They were always so great.

Dave and Danny Carey from Tool are the greatest of all time!

Can someone plesse explain to me how these guys are playing quarter notes so dam fast?? They didnt have youtube and the internet bsck then so where did they gain this ability? Is it just pure genetic luck? You can sit there and practice quarter notes for a year and still not pick up rhis kinda speed. Yes im very envious! Yes i despise not being able to go that fast. Yes its depressing. Yes the motivation starts to leave. It sucks! Dave Lombardo was self taught or taught?? This guy is a unique beast.

I like Slayer, but they really were awful to him.

The kind of solo you hear every beginner playing. He's a great drummer for Slayer. Drum solos? Not so much.
