Dave Johnston (RIP)
(Feb. 22, 1959- Nov. 20, 2017)
5 time world kickboxing champion WKA
His Record 58-9 (16 KO's)
He lifelong career developed from judo training begun at the age of 6, followed by numerous other martial arts systems. He eventually earned five professional kickboxing world championship titles and a ninth-degree black belt.
Mr. Johnston was inducted into the Kenpo Hall of Fame and was honored with two inductions into the U.S. Martial Arts Hall of Fame. In 1983, he moved to Los Angeles, where he appeared in several television shows and movies. He greatly enjoyed the film industry, even working behind the camera.
David Ian Johnston, 58, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2017, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from complications following cardiac surgery.

For years, Dave Johnston trained alongside Mike Winklejohn, who later founded the famed Jackson-Wink MMA gym in Albuquerque, New Mexico, when they were both World Champion fighters in the early and mid 1980's. (This is where UFC Champ Jon Jones has trained for the last 12 years.) Winkeljohn was also an amazing fighter, but a kick to the face in practice in 1986 put his right eye out, so he decided to turn to coaching.

@@fucu41 bill packer kenpo karate he had some of the best stable of fighters back then tones of world champions
Happy to have trained with him, taught me to fight in both stances by way of a hard lesson he learned. Rip

Really? I gotta look this guy up more. I don’t see technique like this on tv matches anymore. His technique is very clean and precise👌🏽

@@themacocko6311 I don’t think Muay Thai is invincible either. It’s got loop holes like any other discipline. Though if is favored by many.

Thank you so much for the channel! Full contact karate/American kickboxing is still my favorite sport- we trained in that sport when I was young and I still train its techniques. It's a beautiful style. I don't like Muay Thai- looks ugly to me. Yes it is effective, but besides effectiveness I like to choose the style that also looks good. And I'm strongly believe that good kickboxers using TKD and Karate techniques can defeat Muay Thai fighters

It's a real shame that kickboxing died in popularity in the US and that the full-contact ruleset went with it. It's basically impossible to find pro matches under these rules anymore.

@@timzarmi6850 Indeed. I was young enough in the 80s and early 90s that I only vaguely remember the kickboxing scene at the time but I remember enough to feel nostalgic for it. And I've spent a fair amount of time as an adult going back and researching the history and watching matches. The mid-70s through early 90s was a great time for American martial arts.
