    He’s not even playing to a ghost track or with a metronome. The melodies, accents, the changes and timing. It’s all in his head! That’s incredible! I’ve listened to the first Foos album again recently and I’m still amazed that he played everything on it. He has to be one of the greatest rock musicians ever. A legend for sure.

    Many drummers can physically play this but nobody on this planet can do it the way Dave does. The combination of subtlety, clarity, precision and power he plays with is unbelievable. Seeing this makes me want to show it to all students of the instrument as a study in groove and subtlety. Yes he goes balls to the wall at times but it all fits. The groove is not lost during the flashy parts, instead it’s reinforced. Too many drummers are all speed during a solo and it sounds like a car accident, or they don’t know when to lay back, be in the pocket, then lead when needed. Just super tasty fills on here that fit fine. A driving rhythm without monotony. Every roll or fill propels the music forward, fitting together like a super glued Jenga puzzle. Learning, evolving, growing. Two thumbs way up!

    Being a bass player for many many years the problem with most drummers that can't distinguish play with power yet remain clean, distinctive and supportive to root the foundation. There's simply few drummers that ebb and flow without losing feel, power, and dynamics of the music. I have almost took my bass off and slammed it over a drummer's head because of overplaying and chaotic playing!

    Dave Grohl is a legendary drummer. That's a fact. Is he "technically" as good as, say, Mike Portnoy? No, but his impact in music and culture is far greater. Ask any rock guitarrist in the world who the best ever was. Everyone will say Hendrix, even though there have probably been thousands who are "technically" better than him by now. Thing is: he paved the way, and no one really could match his spark since. It's just transcendental. And let me tell you, I'd rather listen to Dave drumming than Portnoy any day. But crazy thing is: I get to listen to both! It's a wonderful world.

  • @reman81

    @reman81

    dave had a long drumming career as much as portnoy has...you don't have to take away from one to give credit to the other..they both paved the way for their music genres(grunge, progressive rock-metal) and have inspired millions of musicians for decades. Not through their technique, but through their music composition. They both had their ups and downs musically, as much as cobain, hendrix, petrucci etc have. No musician ever had a 100% music career where everything they wrote is a legendary song. As far as who we'd all rather listen to, it's completely subjective and depends on the person, the mood, the age etc. Music is not a competition..you can enjoy all of it without preference boundaries.

    @@reman81 I agree with you 100%, and wasn't trying to take anything away from anyone. I'm a huge Portnoy fan actually, so I kinda lied when I said I'd take Dave's playing any day, more like MOST days haha. But I think they're both music giants in their own way and role models for a whole generation of musicians.

    Neil Peart is the best IMO. I know tons of local drummers around my area who look to that guy for kit ideas. Dave is rad as fuck though on all the instruments je plays. Dude loves music. Anything created from the heart is far better than something not.

    @@ldiegosousa Some people never followed Nirvana back in the day so they may not know who he is and only got to know him from Foo Fighters. I was like, what the hell, is he now going to play ''guitar and sing?'' after I knew him as an amazing punk and later grunge rock drummer. Also some millenials may not even know there was a Nirvana group that literally made history and created the whole generation of musicians coming from the nineties.

    This guy is the drummer that was in one of the most iconic bands in the word, the evolution of his playing, writing and Interpretation since the first time I saw him play like a beast through this day is amazing, show how a master mind evolves and works. Speaking musically, it’s a genius, writing something that is that long without making a person bored or wanting to skip to something else it’s really hard to do, I have written things that are 3-4 minutes long, this guy make a 23 minutes instrumental song! All by himself, the word needs to give more credit to the job of this man. Other persons are happy to lived in the time of Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Beatles, The Who, I’m really happy to be alive in the times of Dave Grohl.

    You can admire the feeling and mastery of music only with visual: amazing! The sound is so controled too, not very complex compositions but what control in sound and feeling especially with no big mistakes, in one shot (that's not how studio works in general!)! That's really how good rock works: not very complex but very mastered gestures, a bit like dance: it's very obvious when you look at this performance, EVEN IN A STUDIO! Here I can remember Bonham, Paice, Appice, Krupa: it is this high family of soul drummers. By the way very well composed.
