That is crap, I religiously was a Nirvana fan when I was younger and they said how much they got on and Dave said he lost his best friend. Things did however get rough towards the end though because of his drug problems.

People don't seem to realize that Nirvana was only around for 7 years. Kurt and Krist formed in 1987 and then Kurt died in 1994. The success accomplished in those 7 years is almost impossible, and it speaks to Kurts talent and the impact Nirvana had on the world.

The Beatles RECORDED and RELEASED music for eight years but they were together for five years previous to that. The singles and records and fame came after several years together. But yes Nirvana was a phenomenon the likes we haven’t seen since.

They then did a US tour, did voiceovers for an animated series, recorded Rubber Soul, encountered LSD, did a tour of Asia, went to India for their retreat there, recorded Revolver, and then did their last US tour. All of the above took around 18 months. Nirvana had a meteoric launch, but the Beatles hung on that same rocket ride longer than anybody else. Nirvana blew up so fast that I saw them at the peak of Nevermind mania in 1992 for around $15 bucks ($25 NZ dollars). They had booked small gigs and sold tickets at indie band prices, although the venue was upgraded 3 times. Rumour was that they were paid NZ$17k for the show which would have been not much over US$10k.

If you become the greatest rock star in the world, there's only a few hundred people making a proper living. You're not one of the best musicians in the world you're a celebrity who pretends to be a real musician.

I was in high school when Kurt died. It was painful for almost the entire school. I went to a HUGE high school and EVERYONE was sad, even the teachers... they, like us, realized the fact that Nirvana changed music forever.. They are literally as important to modern music as the Beatles. The only artist that did more for music, and rock and roll specifically, was Elvis. They are the last band to have an impact like that.. Iv seen Nirvana and Foo fighters both in my life. I think Dave is more famous now than Kurt was then. Rightfully so.. he is more successful than Kurt... sorry this is so long but its important for people younger than myself to understand how much Nirvana changed the game.. once they came out, hair bands like def Leppard and poison instantly went away.

@@mattdrummond5654 The impact that Nirvana had was incredible, not just on a musical level, but culturally on a global scale. I remember that punks, metalheads, rappers, hastas, even my grandfather, absolutely everyone enjoyed Nirvana. Cobain was a very sincere person and that reverberated in everyone. My mother, to this day, gets emotional when she listens to the unplugged album. I turned 40 this year, and I still miss Cobain's presence.

u need to stop torturing yourself, and listen to bands that you can go and see now, and enjoy and be happy.

Kurt Cobain isn’t the most technically proficient singer, but what he brought to the table in terms of pure emotion and energy is unmatched. Nirvana covers really show how impressive what Cobain brought was, his vocals are untouchable in a lot of ways. He was truly a treasure and is still missed, but it’s nice to know Grohl continued the greatness of Nirvana in a way with Foo Fighters.

Kurt was heavily inspired by the Beatles and underground acts like the pixies and the vaselines. Simple catchy songs. It was a great contrast to hair metal which was dominating the scene when they came out. Here was a band that could right a deep heavy and catchy 2 chord song as a 3 piece.

No, his voice wasnt untouchable. Nirvana fans seem to only know him in rock music. There were way more raw and passionate singers even in the grunge cenario, even in his own band. Kurt knew how to write catchy and punk songs, inspired by a lot of bands that kinda done similar things to them. He was a talented and good musician, but just stop putting him in this "untouchable" level. That's what 14 y/old fanatic kpope fangirls do.

Wasn 't a technically proficient singer? That's somehow slightly a inaccurate term, his voice conveyed a very rare sense of raw emotion. It's technically good in its own right. This is rock and roll, what do you expect, an opera singer? You could say that most rock stars weren't technically proficient. If you're thinking about that and not engaging with your raw emotion and feeling you're not a Nirvana fan, you're just some abstract nerd.

Dave Grohl’s description of his first day waking, after his bandmate Kurt was found dead, is identical word-for-word to my first day waking after my sweet son was killed by another in a car. May they all, and now Taylor, Rest In Peace.

This was great because the interviewer didn’t rush it. He seemed to actually listen instead of concentrating on his next question.

Dave is such a sweetheart, he’s so willing to be vulnerable for an interview and sincere with his responses. That’s not what I think when I think rockstar.

Grohl was part of one of the most influential bands in history, and then had an entire hall of fame music career after that. That's pretty incredible.

If anyone deserves to be a rockstar it is Dave Grohl. A hard working humble and honest musician who doesn't seem to take a day for granted. I was blessed to grow up with Nirvana and Grunge as it happened. I was 12 when Bleach was released and in Philly they had a pretty big cult following. I was so blessed to be able to sneak in when they played JC Dobbs (which became Pontiac Grill). Amazing times. No one cared about race or racism. No one cared what gender you were. Everyone was cool and everyone was excepted. We had skinheads hanging out with black punks and white rappers. For some reason we all got along. I think because we all saw each other for who you were. If you were a decent person you were cool. If you brought drama and trouble you were still tolerated to a point. I so wish we could go back to those times.

I was 17 in Ohio when Nevermind dropped. It was like a nuke went off. We had been listening to our parent's Beatles and "Aero Zepplin". Our older brothers had VanHalen and Guns and Roses. We heard rumors of things going on in Seattle, little tremors of something. Then one innocent day, Smells Like Teen Spirit erupted and blew open the path for all the other Seattle bands that seemed to just be waiting for that one breakout. It was a great time to be a kid. That is for sure.

I lived around the corner from JC Dobbs on 3rd and Pine when Grunge peaked. I had two pseudo-intellectual friends along with a high school friend and we’d go drink at McGlinchy’s or Dirty Frank’s, or play pool at Tattooed Mom’s. I never drank much but we’d hang out watching Ren & Stimpy episodes on the mornings after late nights out. We checked out bands like Alice Donut, Fishbone, Sixteen Horsepower, etc. and we’d go slam-dancing at ‘The Bank.’ It really was like you’re saying - everyone in the music & art scene were unconscious & care-free about the issues being shoved down our throats now, but it was all simmering underneath because I saw it with my own eyes as college English professors at Temple and Drexel were making ‘the communist manifesto’ a required reading. I had no idea what it meant then or if it mattered (I read it and thought it was stupid nonsense) but it was getting into a lot of people’s heads, and a lot of the music then was about glorifying drugs, dismantling religion and the family, and hating our country, so it was well underway for the kids born of young 90s mothers to become today’s ‘antifa’ riot goons. Feminism was already at that time a huge problem, and every girl I dated openly hated men. I was treated like dirt and made to feel bad for it, but I know better these days. I wish I knew then what I know now - I’d have left 90s females alone entirely, focused more on my education, and saved up my money for a house. So yeah, it was a better time, but only because we didn’t know any better. On a lighter note, I never thought much of ‘grunge’ bands, but I thought Jane’s Addiction were the shit! I got thrown out of the Tower Theater for dancing in the aisle. Perry was so pissed at security that night for being assholes to the audience. I saw Jane’s at the 1st Lollapalooza tour though. More than made up for it. One last thing though, It really signifies the real danger of the dark, nihilistic attitudes of grunge bands, that almost no bands from that time survived it due to drug deaths. Drugs were everywhere in that scene - and the absolute hardest drugs. I was just thinking today that the 90s music scene is still taking lives - with Taylor Hawkins found dead with a cocktail of psychoactives and hallucinogens and who knows what else in him. There goes another one - and a real good, talented one. So yeah, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times… Stay healthy, man. Broaden your musical horizons. Listen to some Aphrodite’s Child, Richard Ashcroft, Julee Cruise, U2, New Retro Wave. Study some nutrition & get some sun & exercise. Get out of that 90s hole, man. Let the dead bury the dead as the saying goes. Peace & Love, and stay healthy.

And if you get the hidden meanings in some of his songs he's really explaining some deeply personal and fucked up shit, stuff that people who get it don't explain it because it's that messed up, there was some bad stuff that happened to him when he was young.

My dad was in a successful regional band when I was young - same era, he was heavily inspired by Kurt and was a little bit younger (he was 19 when I was born in 92). He was just on the cusp of really great things for his music career and then his best friend and song writing partner took his own life. My dad never played in a band again and it breaks my heart a little every time I think about it. Dave is so gracious opening up these old wounds time and time again to show his appreciation for his fans. It must be so hard, even now

it seems like Dave looks back at it as good memories is happy to talk about it, it must be even harder now he has lots another band member though, also due to drugs.

"This is my first time getting dressed since X died", etc. Yep, that really captures that feeling.

I was 14 when Kurt died and I had been borrowing my sister’s Nirvana music and thought they were incredible. I’ve grown to appreciate and understand their music more and more over the years, and sometimes I wonder where Cobain would be now, how he would have evolved and even if he’d still be in music.

They would of had more good albums, and I think a a quiet and experimental EP. When they added Pat, Nirvana was really in their pinnacle. I think Dave would of still had an associated act with Foo Fighters, but still been in Nirvana.

I'm 40 yrs old and grew up during these years of Nirvana, Foo Fighters in my teenage years. True, honest music that can never be recreated. That's when people were REAL and music was REAL. No matter how tough it was in the struggle to make things work, people had drive and fought the fight. It's amazing that they stuck together and grew up together, never giving up that fight. Best bands in history.

A year after Kurt died I was born. Growing up my mom introduced me to Nirvana and Foo Fighters. I’ve been a fan ever since. I just wish Kurt was still here. I would do anything to see Nirvana live. May both Kurt and Taylor RIP. You gave the world a great gift in your music.

Wow this is the first time i’ve looked up how Dave felt since Kurt’s departure. I grew up listening to Foo Fighters, and i have obviously heard about Nirvana but i just wanted to know what happened. Dave was hurt…deeply devastated but he moved forward..amazing

Dave is such a warm, gentle and humble man. The world needs more Dave Grohl's

The hurt and pain is still very much evident in Dave's eyes when he talks about Kurt and Nirvana. *R.I.P. Cobain*

You should watch his SXSW keynote speech. He describes it so beautifull there.

I like Dave Grohl, he's always seems courteous and engaging when he's being interviewed. No huge ego, even though he'd be perfectly justified to have one.

Such a tragedy still years later. Dave is such warm hearted person. You instantly like him and want to hug him when he tells that story

I remember being 14 and seeing that he died on MTV. They were my favorite band at that time in my life. Being so young I had no idea why he would leave this world. Now I totally understand.

Same. This was my favorite band when Kurt died. I vividly remember where I was and what I was doing the moment I heard he died. It’s a memory that stays with me. It was probably my first time understanding or really thinking about death. As an adult I get it. I battled heroine addiction many years ago and know how all consuming it is. A lot of people don’t make it out alive. So tragic.

DG is the articulate, thoughtful, journeyman rock guy that I wanted in the 90s. Glad he's still around making music.

Enjoy the little moments that’s what matters even in the bad breathing and being alive is freedom

30 years ago... A very, very special piece of rock history.

Dave you’ll never see this, but I appreciate you sharing your feelings with the world. I lost my mom unexpectedly recently, and it’s true, everything is the first time in your new life. Great interview ❤

Dave Grohl is an absolute master at overcoming adversity in the face of personal loss. To think that when Nirvana fell apart that he would end up founding a new band that would be as big if not bigger than Nirvana and would find another rock brother in Taylor Hawkins. Truly a brave soul.

Dave Grohl is so incredibly well spoken that I’m constantly amazed by his train of thought and ability to convey feeling!

I can’t even imagine how much it hurts for Dave to watch this, to see what felt like forever for him as he lived it to all be sped up and condensed into just a videos a few minutes long. To remember it like it was just yesterday, to remember what it felt like to be there. In the moment. To see what felt like would be the rest of his life suddenly end one day so unexpectedly, so abruptly. Even though four years for him felt like forever, it only lasted for a millisecond in the grand stretch of time. In reality everything stopped as soon as it started, and for someone who lived through it, you literally couldn’t wrap your mind around that. But when Dave said “it felt like something was gonna pop” something did pop, and that thing ended music as the world knew it. It ended life for Dave and Krist as they knew it. It was like pressing a reset button, where do you even go now? Building everything up from the ground is like being punched in the stomach at full force, the pain in knowing everything you worked for is gone and not only that but just when things were looking up and getting good. The feeling of everything that you knew and loved being suddenly and abruptly ripped away from you and taking a piece of your heart and someone close to you with it is abysmal, it’s enough to keep you up at night for days. For most people things change, nothing stays the same, but there is a translation into the new phases of your life, but for Dave and Krist one day they woke up and everything suddenly came crashing down. No warnings. No transition. Just all at once. It hit them like a train. They woke up like normal, like any other day, but couldn’t sleep again that night. The total turn of events changed their lives and the course of them too. You never expect one day to wake up a different person as to when you go to sleep but sometimes, things change right before your eyes and there is nothing you can do to stop it. You have to ride the carousel and sometimes it spins so fast it makes you sick. Even though things sometimes fall apart as soon as they seemed to be put together you can’t stop. You have to use every ounce of strength left within you to power through and like Dave Ghrol once said “learn to walk again.”

Happened to AC/DC too when Bon Scott suddenly died. They got lucky with Brian Johnson for the second round. Brian was highly successful carrying on with the torch, but Bon’s storytelling songs with a wink of sly cleverness were missing and left a bit of a hole.

As a 41 year old, I'm noticing more and more teenagers wearing nirvana tee shirts! Transcndeing a generation... a truly special band!

Him describing "that new first time", is one of the best definitions on an angle of grief .. I am suffering from grief from my mother dying 7 years ago, and pushing my fiance away with my addiction last year. My heart goes out to everyone.

I was 19/20 when I first heard Nirvana. I heard "Bleach" and about 6 months later "Nevermind" was released and it opened the doors for so many other bands and it was awesome. In 2 years I saw every big band then. All the Seattle groups. Then we got Rage and Metallica were huge and Slayer and I saw so many important Punk and Hardcore bands back then like Bad Religion, Fugazi and Green Day before they were popular and for me,, it all started with Nirvana. Unfortunately the 1 band I never saw live was Nirvana. I remember thinking I'll see them next time they come to NYC. But Kurt died. I regret it even now. They really were a shinning star that burned out too fast. But I saw Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Foo Fighters, Bad Brains, Descendents, Gorilla Biscuits etc,etc...and it really started with Nirvana. So, thanks Dave!

Dave Grohl is a special human being. Salute to the man!!!!

i think everybody enjoyed it best when people had someone like kurt calling the shots. not a perfect person but definitely lovable and introspective and creates introperspectivity.

Super deep conversation. Love Nirvana one of the greatest bands ever! Dave is so humble and authentic and great storyteller.

Kurt Cobain was so unique. His songwriting and voice simply can't be replicated. One of a kind, without a doubt.

Having been in grade 10 when Kurt died, I awoke that shi**y April morning with it being all over the papers, media, and being so saddend by that still... Yet followed Dave ever after... He remains, still so pure Dave.... Seems genuinely just so nice, and still grounded 💖💞

I lost my best friend my brother April 22nd 2008, I watched him take his own life and it happened so fast there wasn’t anything I could have done to stop him. I feel it in my soul when I hear Krist say things along the lines of he should’ve never done that and he chose to die that way. My best friend my brother was a great kid he was only 18 when he took his life. I was 17 and when he did that he took a big chunk of me with him. I think about him everyday and I hate the fact that I can’t call him today I hate the fact that he decided to cut his life so short. He had so much life to live. But I make sure to bring him up often to keep his name alive because although he took a piece of me the day he died i now carry a piece of him through life

This was really insightful into his mindset and feelings, I was never big into Nirvana and I remember Foo Fighters was huge when I was in highschool, even now sometimes I forget that Dave once upon a time was Nirvana's drummer, what an incredible journey this man has been on. Big props to the interviewer

Listening to music is one thing that without a doubt has saved so many life’s & I can’t imagine what it does for you when your the one playing & making it at such a large & amazing scale. I don’t ever see this man giving up on his art.

R.I.P. Kurt and now Taylor. Today is the 28 year anniversary of losing Kurt. Hope everyone is feeling ok today.

I can’t respect Dave enough for how he took a positive spin on the bad situations that life gave him. Most people would have cracked at some point for if they had happen to them what happened to him. Music is his ultimate escape and he uses it to the fullest extent. Love Dave and Nirvana to the end.

it was a glorious time in music........I remember playing drums in bands back in 91..........we were playing the same type music but new grunge or hard alternative albums were coming out every month......all the new music was so incredible....even though we were not nearly as good as all of the bands who made it, it was so much fun just to be a part of the scene back then.............it was a much much different time.

I dont like that counrtney said Dave Kurt hated you, in a interview she will say anything cruel to hurt ppl. these guys loved each other and had a deep brotherhood

@@43bumpy Correction: Is Courtney is Poison and always will be. That is the core of her soul. Why do you think she never remarried in almost 30 years? If she got married she can no longer live off the title of Kurt Cobain‘s widow and let’s face it who is she if not that? Not to mention I’m sure it would have some financial repercussions for her, it’s incredibly sad. I don’t claim to know if he committed suicide or if she killed him but I have always felt From the way that she grieved so publicly in the 90s that she loved that attention and ate it up and was never gonna let it go.

Thank you so much for posting this. Dave Grohl is one of those names that I'd put on a very short list of "people you'd most like to sit down and have a conversation with."

This man has lost 2 best friends in 2 different bands, and now he's lost his mother too... Dave, if you read this, I'm sending you a virtual hug! Although I've never been in a band (I play and sing like a 2yr old) this last decade, I've lost my sister, dad, and mom, and I'd love to know how you can keep functioning, it's hard, but I trudge along mostly in autopilot.......

I’m 20 so nirvana is before my time but i got raised listening to their music and i’ve been a fan of them all my life, i wish i could’ve seen them live.

Dave is a genius, heart goes out to him.
