Great playing and great demo as always. I owned this set along with other EMG sets many years ago. Terrific set. I just made sure I could access the battery by the trem springs rather than having to get under the pickguard which is a pain in the ass. I've also used some stacked single coils, both Duncan and DiMarzio. Generally, I tend to like DiMarzio's stacked single coils more, but as far as Duncans go I think the STK 4 set is outstanding. Gilmour went back to passives about the time he recorded On an Island in 2006. He still gets a great tone. He's not using stacked Duncans but rather a Duncan SSL true single coil set. I don't know if he has a silent system installed in his passive strats. Gilmour has a great ear for tone so I'm always interested in how he achieves those tones. A very nice thing about the EMG set is due to its passive nature it achieves distortion through a built in preamp rather than from a hot, high output magnetic field. This allows for more clarity than you'd get with a high output passive single coil, including most stacked single coils. When it comes to stacked single coils I generally shy away from the hot ones as they lose single coil characteristics like quack on 2 an 4 and sweetness. A bridge that's hotter relative to middle and neck is fine, but you don't want something that sounds like a sledgehammer.

I became an EMG only user back in 1987 when I replaced the Washburn branded EMG non active humbucker in my 1986 Washburn RR11V with an EMG -H since then every guitar I have owned or built has had some form of active EMG in it, My current favorites are the Glenn Tipton Vengeance set I put into my home built "BRS" for GGBO 21. I then moved the Zakk Wylde set I had in it over to my newest GGBO 22 Thick Lzzy build. Battery life for me is at least a year and as much as two years on some. those with the active tone circuits will be much less but I would expect a good 6 + months I would think.

I had a Steinberger with emg pickups in the 80s and they were great for what I was doing....the lead guitarist in my band for a decade played a strat with lace sensor pickups and personally I loved them.....I took a bridge lace sensor and put it in the middle of my nashville tele and I loved it. I believe you can make almost any pickup sound good with a simple EQ pedal on your board. Lace sensors respond well to my GE7 Boss EQ box. I have traditional single coils in my strat though and the hum has never bothered me much..I've never felt the need to swap them out. Lace sensors biggest plus over emg's....no battery necessary

It sounds really good. I don’t like red anything but I do like a pearloid pick guard. I have one on my Reverend 6 Gun and I think it looks great. I’ve wondered about the Fender Lace pickups. If I ever change any pickups I’m going with the hand wound Seymour Duncan Hendrix reproductions. I’ll never be anywhere but playing in my living room but I’m interested in how things sound. Also a big fan of visual aesthetics because I graduated from an art academy 🎨. Thanks for the video and keep up the good work. 👍☮️🌞🎸🎵💖

I have emg sa's with midboost and normal tone control in my 1982 50's Fender JV strat. FIrst time i installed the pickups i was getting a lot of buzzing. Found out that the channels under the the pickups were too shallow. Had to buy a mount and wood cutting tool for a Dremel tool my dad had laying around. So I carefully cut the channels about 4mm deeper so the EMGs could fit. Sound amazing by the way.

The Gilmour guitar in question was a candy apple red ‘82-‘84 vintage re-issue ‘57. The body cavities had to be routed lower to accommodate the emg’s & wiring. He also had the pickups as low as possible which apparently retained the ‘Strat’ like sound. Not sure but I think had a white one too.

I had set of active EMG 80’s in the late 80’s in a strat .they sounded great but we were supporting the uk subs .and the bstard battery packed up .the beggar died there and then ..the battery was under the scratch plate so couldn’t swap it out .so had to borrow the subs guitarists guitar ..after that I hard tailed it and fitted the battery in the cut out where the trem springs live didn’t use a trem. that sorted that out ..in strats now I use Ironstones Alnico 5 classic single coils .I use a Gibson les Paul for the humbucker sound …I also found noiseless single coils soulless too .

I put this set into a Squier 50's classic vibe. The Classic Vibe is well made for the price and the built-in PU was ok, with quite little output, as it was common in the 50s. Anyway, with the David Gilmour set the guitar sounds really good and like Pink Floyd ;-) I have bought a Fiesta Red one, because I saw David in a video with a red Strat :-) You have to get used to the sound shaping - I use it discreetly, then it brings some boost, which you can maybe use for a solo part. I rarely turn the boosters up to max, I think it's over the top then. Otherwise, I can confirm your impression and it really upgrades the Squier, at least as far as the electronics and the sound are concerned. By the way, I put the "Fender Pre-Wired ST Pickguard Hot N." in another Squier Classic Vibe 70's, which sounds fantastic!

I was 'gifted' a set of these EMGs and fitted them to a 3-tone Sunburst partscaster build. They are extremely special. I have mine fitted in a BWB 3-ply scratchplate with the Bridge pup angled Hendrix style. I also installed a Battery Box in the guitar to make changing the battery easier. Hi Dave - the EXG and SPC controls take a bit of getting used to. For sure they aren't traditional tone controls. The SPC (normal mid pickup tone socket on a strat) boosts the mids and sort of makes the rear pickup more humbucker in sound. It's really great. The EXG sort of anti scoops the mids and is also cool. Using them at higher values will exhaust the batter faster. I put my battery in the spring cavity. It did think about putting 18v thru them. The CMOS seems to imply it can take it - try at own risk. I love EMGs in my Jazz basses.

I fully agree with you Dave about the pearloid scratchplate. It has ALWAYS baffled me why EMG sell this a 'complete' unit this way. As Dave says its just not 'Gilmourish' at all. I do have a set of these EMG and they're awesome. The battery, like Dave says, does tend to last quite a while. I will say though I do actually prefer the Gold Lace Sensors that I have in my Strat Pluses. But that's a purely personal thing of course. Great playing as always Dave!

After going through many Strat models and most of the CS line of pickups, boutique pickups I settled on two SRV models (thick Oval neck, once you go thick you can never go back), one with the DG20’s and the other with the Lace Sensor Gold and Clapton Midboost. YMMV on the ‘extras’ vs normal Strat wiring but for me those two guitars get me through any set and its really just a matter of which one I decide to grab. I doubt anyone in the audience is upset that Im not using some vintage stagger low wind cork sniffer stuff and Ill bet they are actually glad since I dont get all the noise and ice pick. YMMV but this is the stuff for me and it does Death Metal too if you are interested in that.

I’ve got a set of those, they are very good. Word of warning if you want a different pickguard you’ll need to buy the set not the loaded pickguard as the DG20 isn’t easily swapped to a new guard. Before you put the money into the SA set try the crossroads set, a little lower output, a little more organic, less mids but include the mid boost and you can get the SA sound pretty easily. I love both sets but I prefer the crossroads, they also look look like normal single coils pole pieces and all.

Nice, I like EMGs. Would love to see what you would make of their retro active humbucker models, they are great pickups. I have a LP style guitar currently with an EMG mini humbucker in the neck and I get David Gilmour vibes from the sound of it. It's a nice fat single coil sound to have in a humbucker guitar. There's a good album by a band called Airbag that entirely uses the Gilmour EMGs I think, if anyone is craving some Floyd-esque rock. It's called All Rights Removed. Dave you might like them. The retro actives are in some of the nicer Harley Benton guitars, it's a shame Thomann did Dave wrong.

There's several issues with this. For one, screw patterns on strat backplates vary wildly. Secondly the current draw with EMGs is ridiculously low, batteries last a year easily, my bass had a battery last 10 years. With the fact that the battery is probably only getting charged once a year in extreme cases, I'd be concerned about the battery degrading and becoming useless after only a handful of charge cycles. Which ties into my final point. Price is ridiculous considering the parts inside are probably only a few dollars worth. I was going to build my own take on Fishman's design, but ended up scrapping that idea because I realised it's pointless. I put an Energiser Ultimate Lithium 9v in instead. 10 year shelf life, 3x the capacity of a normal 9v. People worry too much about this. EMG are correct in saying that you don't need to remove strings to replace the battery, just take a few screws off, and bend up the pickguard. If it still bugs you. Just bridge the 9v connector inside the guitar, and power it with a stereo cable. You can get a basic pedal box for cheap, put a mono jack for the output, a stereo jack for the input, wire up a couple of 9v connectors inside, a switch to turn off the batteries, maybe even a switch to go from 9v to 18v and put that on your board. If you want to use a passive guitar, you just turn off the batteries. EMG sells such a device, but imo you can build one for a fraction of the cost. I was going to, but I decided it just wasn't necessary.

You've nailed the Gilmour sound. Exactly what pedals are you using to sound so 'Gilmourish'? I'm buying the EMG prewired setup, however. I'm also doing a custom Strat build and will be putting the pickguard in my 20 year bin for later use. I have no use for the pickguard as for now. I'll be making a custom pickguard to match the true character of my current build.
