this is the same guy I saw performing 2 days ago.... he's wrong, ya know, he really does have 9 lives. He survived Basildon. He survived losing his father. He's survived the pressures of being the lead singer of this incredible band. He survived a drug overdose. He survived Alan leaving. He survived rehab. He survived 40 years (off and on) of touring. He survived cancer. He survived losing Fletch. These things could have utterly destroyed him beyond repair, but they didn't.

And lucky. The judge saved his life. I mean, people around him had an interest off keep him going, his family loved him, but he needed structure. I think those jail charges, police, the judges and all that, did their job. I lived in a neighbouhood where I would see heroin addicts( caballo in Spanish) on a daily basis. I felt sad and disgusted by them. The way that they destroy themselves and anyone around them, their teeths, the filth, the hounds. That people I saw back then is probably dead by now. Heroin is poison, it kills you and degradate you first so much that your family ends up by wanting you dead. It is also cheap. The "caballo" was only 6 euros. So, it is a drug for poor people. It is sad as fuck. I am amazed too that he is still here and still working.😊

I know the possession of drugs is illegal, but if you see a person who is about to commit suicide and you put him in Jail!!!!! it makes no sense. No kidding. Dave (and many addicts like him) finds themselves in dangerous ground with addiction or in his case, he overdoses and nearly dies and rather than put him in addiction clinic as soon as possible the police find him and charge him with a pretty serious crime. I didn't expect to see this on the web. The woman reporter said he ignored his agent and was "contrite and vulnerable." That sums up Depeche Mode well enough including just about all of Martin's songs. Dave is on his worst morning after the night before and he is still totally honest and courteous to the reporter. That makes him an amazing example of humility. I think it was the band's friend Jonathan Kessler who picked him up in his car. I remember the picture of Dave being driven away in the car in Steve Malins' biography of the band. Seeing this makes it sweeter to be there at their great show at Wembley Arena in September 1998.

I have been a fan for 37 years. I remember all of this and after suffering from addiction myself I can say he is a survivor. I've been clean 11 years. I got you Dave and I'm so glad you're still here!

Congratulations on getting clean and staying clean and sober ❤
This period must have been so difficult for Dave and Depeche Mode, yet they still managed to create one of the most beautiful things in the world - The Devotional Tour. Every time I watch it on DVD I get chills. Unfortunately I wasn't even born back then. Would give anything to see them live during that tour. So glad that Dave is alive and well! I love him.
So glad he beat his addiction and I’ve just gotten to see him with DM absolutely blowing us all away in Dublin. Incredible front man, incredible band
Dave's a strong guy. Very few people recover from addiction like that
Thank You, God. You save a Dave.Thank You, God. We see him again.Thank You, God, You save Dapeche Mode.Thank You, God, You give us a world.
This video made me tear up. It hit home. I have a family member that is also a recovered heroin/cocaine addict. God bless you Dave Gahan. I'm happy you are doing so well today. I love your music.
I am so proud of him for being honest. I’m proud of him for being clean now . He has accomplished so much now. Not many survive but he’s my hero.

I saw this live and it is as sad now to re-watch it as it was then. He needed to say it outloud....Step 1🙏
He really turned his life around since those days. Relevant and in the biggest live act on the planet!
Thank God we didn’t lose Dave Gahan. I was only 2 years old when this was broadcasted, ( which I think was done poorly and unfairly). Nevertheless, I am glad that today they give me great inspiration to continue with life. Dispite not having the glamourise yet troublesome life the band seemed to have endured. The best band to have ever walked this earth, ( in my opinion ).
Какое счастье, что мы его не потеряли
I had no idea of his personal struggles & suffering. Thank God, Dave Gahan is alive & well today, and prospering. Depeche Mode / saved my life when I was going through deep depression.. I’m very grateful, to have survived ❤️
I dont understand how "the laws" want to put a person in Jail who already has such a problem and he is suffering. I know the possession of drugs is illegal, but if you see a person who is about to commit suicide and you put him in Jail!!!!! it makes no sense. And could be accused to 4 years in jail! imagine if this happens! He would be for sure dead. Luckily, with freedom, and with help (specially his own power) he is clean and alive!

No kidding. Dave (and many addicts like him) finds themselves in dangerous ground with addiction or in his case, he overdoses and nearly dies and rather than put him in addiction clinic as soon as possible the police find him and charge him with a pretty serious crime. Talk about kicking someone when they are down.

Definitely true, but times have changed I don’t think he would get arrested if this happened today at least in California
One of the few famous people survived to that mess... Dave you are beautiful inside and out ♡
No "sorry" needed. Know your fans love you and the other band members, some, like myself have loved you all since the 80s. Remember! There are no rights or wrongs, no mistakes, only experiences to learn from. What was, was! What is, is! Keep rocking Dave.
so fucking heavy... as if i already knew this already , yet hearing him speak on it is heart wrenching... a soul survivor...
he's right. Addiction robs you of everything, and then your life. Stay strong man.

I was thinking the very same thing. I was at the Wembley Arena gig too which was amazing but also amazingly so bumped in Dave Gahan in New York earlier that year, March I think it was. My bf and I asked if we could take a few photos, and just as you describe him, he was the most humble and lovely guy, so obliging. He looked healthy too which was very nice to see.

Thats awesome! He seems like a a down to earth type of guy. I love how he makes it a point to apologize to his fans in this interview. It just goes to show he's not one of those guys with that rock star douche bag image. which is why I love him. He totally stepped up to the plate. I have a lot of admiration for him for that.
My heart breaks every time a watch this....he looks so fragile and broken and hurt :'-( tears come to my eyes when he apologizes to the ppl he loves... God, such a great man. I'm so happy he came out of it on the other side and he is now happy and still making great music. Thank you, Lord, for giving us Dave and for KEEPING him on this planet
It is so painful to see this interview with this right after he has been released from the jail....he's so 'destroyed' and saying that he is sorry to all the fans... tears come to my eyes. :'-( What a good news that he's doing so well the last years!...the last more than decade! He's our cat.... Dave Cat Gahan - 9 lives for sure.

It is so raw. Someone is trying to pull him away from the reporters but he isn't having it. No more pretending. He wants to tell the TV cameras he's an addict and he fucking *died* and enough is enough
At least one reporter can pronounce Gahan! Joking aside, I’m so happy and relieved that Dave turned his life around and kicked the habit. Depeche Mode.... more than a band, more than music, it’s etched on my DNA; as much a part of me as the grey whiskers in my beard! It was also nice to see Alan drumming away wearing those trousers which are now in my wardrobe upstairs after winning them at a DM convention in Basildon a good few years ago! 😎
this would've been such a tragedy. thank God he is still with us. love him
Reach out and touch faith!! ( Dave you saved my life in 1993!)
God, that poor baby. I'm so glad he's alive. I'm 18 and Dave and Depeche have influenced me and my life so much. I don't know where I would be without Ultra and Songs of Faith and Devotion and Playing the Angel. It would be so strange to lose him and those wonderful albums. I'm so glad he survived and continued doing what he loves.
This man is not weak and you can see it in all these performances.
I'm glad Dave Gahan got clean from drugs & chose life ❤
This broke my heart. I'm so damned glad he's still with us.
....I remember when this happen, I was hard to watch. I'm glad he moved on to do better and greater things in life Thank you for more good music !!
This made me cry. Thank god he kicked his addiction. I came to being a DM fan way after the heroin days and its a blessing in disguise. it must have been hard for DM fans when Dave was at his worst. Dont know why they touch drugs in the first place. Love this band and Dave is an awesome person now.

He is always honest in talking about it. i really admire him for that, for saying ‘Hey, don’t do this’ and for holding himself accountable, rather than passing the blame. And by being open and public with it, right away, he’s then got the fans to be accountable to, as additional support in his recovery.
This is heartbreaking 😢I am so glad he survived it all ❤
"Clea-ean...The cleanest I've bee-een. An end to the tears and the in-between years and the troubles I've seen. Now I'm clean"... And this song was written several years before that. Everytime I hear it, I can't help thinking that after 1996, this song must have taken a new depth for him. It's always been a great song anyway (one of my favorites) but now he can sing it from the deepest depths of his heart.

Bitteulze Dave probably started with heavy drugs already from World Violation Tour... I assume that this was not like official.... but if You Read in details the real Story, He was very addicted To Heroin in The Making of SOFAD already (1992). So the Song of CLEAN, that It is a piece of art, already did make sense at that time somehow (before 1996 of course).

He started with Heroin after he moved to live in LA which was in 1991, about a year and a half after Violator was recorded. During the Violator tour all the band members were drinking a lot and doing a lot of E.

No, I really believe that he was in trouble with that Mess already from 1989 (in The Making of The Video Enjoy The Silence his face is drawn) but not heavily and evidently like later on.

We forgive you, Dave. We are just happy you're alive and well now. We were never disappointed in you. Saw DM live in Portland in 2016 I believe. It was awesome to see him so alive and full of positivity. Dancing around and encouraging the audience the whole time. So proud and grateful 😭😭😭
He is got! Thank you, for still been around us! You are a winner.
"Shut up Johnathan!"😂 Although high as a kite, he was brutally honest, apologetic, and delivered the right message. I'm so glad that Dave managed to escape the bottomless pit of drug addiction - an achievement that only few can do.
thank you, aliceindave, for uploading this. everytime i watch it again, my heart stopps beating for a second. i sold my SOFAD ticket endof ne 90'ties because i wanted to remember him, as he was- not as drugs made him. i've been told a hundret times that i missed the best tour/ concert EVER! dave...we are glad you're still with us
Wow.. I remember the news report on TV.. I always remember what he said " I don't want to be like people like Kurt Cobain" so glad he cleaned up.. Keep on rocking Dave 👍
Thanks for this
This is so upsetting to watch I'm so happy that he's not like this anymore, my heart goes out to dave x
So glad you overcome these dark days
so sad watching this, so happy he has overcome his demons and I hope he never goes back there again...love to DG
Crazy crazy times. So thankful that he rebuilt his life, as he said he would do. Long live David Gahan and Depeche Mode.
Bueno,ya esta recuperado y parece ser que volvió a ser el mismo Dave, con su hermosa voz y pasión. Depeche Mode forever.

Its just so hard to believe that some bands/band members go through this stuff. I'm not a huge fan and I haven't heard everything but seeing this almost gets me emotional. Especially since he apologized to the fans about it too.😢
Grazie Jonathan.
He came to America in 1992 to be apart the alternative rock scene Seattle and LA. Where he went into drugs. Listen 93 album. It's very alternative rock sounding. Then their 96 album is my 2nd fav album by DM.

Dear, dear ... 😢
From 1991 to 1996, Dave was heavily influenced by the grunge scene (both its rock music and drug culture) in L.A. Within a span of less than 6 months between 1993-1994, we lost both River Phoenix (THE movie actor of his generation) and Kurt Cobain (THE rock star of his generation). I'm just glad Dave survived honestly.

Gahan was completely enamored with the music and scene coming out Seattle in early-mid 90s. He loved Janes Addiction too. He got too deep.
He done well too get back too life , because if you have money and a addiction it would really be hard too kick the addiction , well done Dave keep up the good work , I know 4 people who died of speed balls and that was just a £20 fix
Am very happy he survived that shit.
