But I didn’t stop trying right until I discovered this particular *4ChildrenReading. Com* a reading guidebook. His own reading abilities are excellent for the 1st grade student and also his development definitely surprised the trainer. She also stated the story to other people.

My dad's favourite comedian. I injured my leg laughing so much at one of his live gigs in Melbourne back in he 80's. The injury to the leg? On Monday, us kids who were able to stay up to watch him couldn't wait to tell our classmates about his mad cap comedy sketches. When we all get together it is amazing what nonsense we think makes sense and we all agree about. ONly when, as he does here, tries to explain to someone who is not party to the conventions, do we see how stupid it all really is. Time is but a small example of this. He was a genius for seeing the nonsense in everyday life and our ridiculous our conventions truly are. I miss him a lot

The whole imperial measurement system(The one the US uses), is also part of this, makes no sense compared to the simple and easy metric system. America please, it's 21centuary!
@Turrican60
6 жыл бұрын
petereuk52: I take the points you're making, but I very slightly disagree. On the contrary, much of the machinery of everyday life makes perfect sense when you stop and think about it - and yes, that includes the traditional clock face. If such things didn't make sense, then Mankind would have devised far better alternatives by now and ceased using such methods long ago. In the case of time measurement, our system is solely determined by the Earth's rotation and orbit around the sun. Accordingly, as it's a cosmic event, we have no choice in the matter where our time system is concerned, ergo it's not at all "stupid". The Dave Allen 'way' was to simply take the extremely ordinary (or exceedingly familiar), and twist it into something that, on the surface at least, APPEARED to be utterly nonsensical. Such an approach takes exceptional talent to pull off with genuine conviction, swagger and style....and that's why, even to this day, I still regard him as the greatest comedian of all time. Many have stolen a few pages from Dave's unique book of humour, but none have even got close to touching this much-missed, genius of a comic. He's an absolute legend.
@Turrican60
6 жыл бұрын
MiZunoX L: Personally, I'm equally happy using the Imperial system (UK) or the metric system as I'm fully conversant with both. There again, I suppose I was lucky enough to be raised at a time when both systems were in common usage in Britain...plus I entered into a career where precise measurement in both these systems was essential. Oddly enough though, I prefer the traditional Imperial system for some weird reason, lol ;-)
@E101ification
6 жыл бұрын
I don't think the point is that these 'conventions' are 'stupid', merely that we take for granted how easy to understand they are because we're used to them, and we forget that to an outsider or newcomer they're incredibly complicated to master.
@crystallineblue4344
5 жыл бұрын
@@Turrican60 the Imperial measurement system is 'friendlier'. Here in Canada, metric is widely accepted for pumping gas, laboratory tests, road signs, ordering industrial materials, etc. But personal measurements such as recipes, birth announcements, our height/weight, etc, majority of us prefer imperial.

Me and my dad (I’m now over 45) watched this when it first come out and I have never seen him laugh so hard, before or since. Dave Allen was superb. His bit on the car following him is just as funny.

i am in my 50s and can remember my father teaching me to tell the time. We also made a cardboard clock together. NICE memory
Pure genius. Sadly missed. Could watch him all the time. Brilliant man and always makes me laugh. Wish they would show this in the TV.
😂😂😂The genius that is Dave Allen...forever missed

It's like like words 'Minute' and 'My nyoot'. (The second spelling I did to clarify the different pronunciation) Both words are actually spelt the same. I can understand why non English speaking people find our language confusing!
I watched these with my parents, I think it was Saturday night viewing. Not only has this stood the test of time, but it is clean funny comedy unlike so much comedy today. Like a lot of people here I watched this when it was new on 1 of 3 channels, so much simpler back then.
One of the best sketches ever written, delivered by one of my favourite comedians. I have seen this so many time but I still cannot help doubling with laughter.

My little boy has problem reading books even though he managed to graduate from pre-school. The trainer sensed concerns that he might be able to enroll grade and advised to hold him back. But I didn’t stop trying right until I discovered this particular *4ChildrenReading. Com* a reading guidebook. His own reading abilities are excellent for the 1st grade student and also his development definitely surprised the trainer. She also stated the story to other people.
The most genius sketch ever at illustrating both the absurdities of the English language, and understanding and relating so lovingly to the mind of any young child. I wish I was a child of Ireland in many ways - they just seem to 'get it' all so well and have a laugh at the same time..
One of my all time favourite comedy bits. I used to. Watch dave allen on BBC with my parents We'd all be laughing so hard
Such a well written, and then well delivered skit. This kind of skill is underestimated.
You can't make this stuff up, seriously... RIP Dave allen.
A perfect example of comedy, absolutely flawless both in verbage and delivery.
The most intelligent comedy ever God rest you sir!
It's been 50years since I saw this crowded into a tv room at boarding school and I can still laugh to my hearts content. I believe I and many others miss that kind of highly intelligent humor. I
"..the third hand is the second hand" - everyone knows where it's going! LOL! Fan-bloody-tastic! I love that he's actually saying that it's not that easy for kids to learn how to tell the time on an analogue clock...and it isn't!
I remember trying to teach my daughter the time.. I was even getting myself confused lol
Officially he is my favourite comedian ever. No other comedian will ever be get even hundred and thousands miles close to this guy. What a genius.
I remember watching this with my parents when I was a teenager. We were all in stitches. It was the first time I'd ever seen Dave Allen.
I just lost it when he said that the third hand is the second hand, that had me in stitches. One of the greatest laughs I have had in quite some time. :D
My dad's favourite comedian. I injured my leg laughing so much at one of his live gigs in Melbourne back in he 80's. The injury to the leg? An irish tragedy: I kicked it up in a fit of laughter so hard at Dave's antics, that my shin caught the sharp cast iron base of the seat in front of me- causing me to laugh and cry at the same time.

I don't think i have ever heard of this man before. But I just rolled on the floor from laughing so hard. I loved it.
Pure genius. Dave you are sadly missed. A true comic God!
I can't watch him without thinking of my, (late), father. He was a devoted fan of Dave Allen and whenever he was on TV we kids would have to sit in absolute silence in case we made a noise and he missed any of the jokes. Having to hold a cushion to our mouths for fear of laughing was no joke. " Thank you, good night and may your God go with you ".
He was a comedy Legend. A good Irish Comedian. RIP Dave Allen😭
Unbelievable ! I adore it ! The marvelousness of the English language !
Still one of my all-time favorite stand-up bits ever. Pure brilliance of cerebral comedy.
Absolute gold. Really feel like Dave Allen is super underrated.
The best comedian ive ever heard.
Total genius, absolute classic

This one of my favourites.Always makes me laugh.Loved it the first time round.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Had me laughing out loud. Got to be one of the funniest jokes told by one of the funniest men ever ;)
Hilarious. Dave can make something as simple as telling the time so funny.
I've only heard of him this morning, and he's already in my top 3 comedians list!

Simply brilliant
I've always got time for Dave Allen!
Man I miss the era when Dave Allen At Large was tops. I remember being a kid still going to primary school & watching his BBC show on a Sunday night when & I shudda been in bed. On Monday, us kids who were able to stay up to watch him couldn't wait to tell our classmates about his mad cap comedy sketches. Being a through Irishman he never took his background serious, his piss-take on religion, sex, & everyday life was hilarious. Another great comedian sorely missed in this time of mediocrity.
One of my all time favourite comedians ever! Simply brilliant and one of those people you wish had never died so he could just continue to entertain.

@Turrican60

petereuk52: I take the points you're making, but I very slightly disagree.
@Turrican60

@E101ification

I don't think the point is that these 'conventions' are 'stupid', merely that we take for granted how easy to understand they are because we're used to them, and we forget that to an outsider or newcomer they're incredibly complicated to master.
@crystallineblue4344
