The only reason it's sad is because it doesn't pay off for so many people. I'm all for having dating apps as an option but people need to learn how to display basic respect and decency towards one another and also to give others enough chances rather than dump and move on from someone the second they see something they may not like becasue they think there are so many other options out there.

Not only that but you actually built a connection while actually talking on the phone. You built anticipation before going on a first date. You could go for a walk in a park holding hands and it was a good date. Yup the good o days.

@@svscared can I just quietly say the fact that some people still for whatever reason think they're pillars of upstanding virtue when they post "No asians," or "no mexicans," (clearly unaware that Mexico of full of kind of everyone including Mennonites) and then hide behind that stupid "it's preference." Like no. If you look at what actually psychologically is behind the idea of "preference," it makes it even more seedier. Not saying I haven't had my moments but some people practice that way too religiously.

The ghosting thing is soooo true. Back then our equivalent was "standing someone up" And it was a devastating thing to do to someone. Also, if you did it, it could even ruin your reputation if you had friends or colleagues in common because it was and still is such an awful thing to do.

It's bc people are seen as disposable today bc we have access to billions. Back in the day, you had your community to choose from and you would likely know/see that person both before and after dating them. Today we can date someone new every hour and never see them again. The grass being greener over there has never been such a big issue in relationships before.

It’s the same for any country without internet. In Uruguay in particular, it’s considered extremely rude not to talk to the people next to you on the bus-most people don’t have their own cars and taxis are expensive. No one used their phones because there’s no internet. We never even took them out of rooms because our building was the only one with Wi-Fi 🤷🏾‍♀️. But also in that light, there were much less men who, how do I say this..only talked to you for the purpose of possibly dating or hooking up with you. And having that assumption to begin with is very out of place. It was authentic networking at it’s finest. Should you come back to the country, you’re expected to reach out and catch up-it’s very rude if you don’t. I’ve never seen so many men and women who were friends without expecting any “benefits”.

Just meet them out in places where you frequent. As a guy, I can guarantee you that we will usually not make the first move any more. With the minefield that finding a decent woman has become, let alone a good woman with Biblical foundations, on top of the fact that you cna be called a creep or have the police called on you or other false accusations, we just don't even bother approaching most of the time anymore. If you find a guy that you enjoy the company of, reach out to him first. This is the dynamic that the modern world has created. After you've reached out, the ball can be in his court, but if you want to make things happen then you're going to have to take the leap of faith.

He definitely has higher testosterone levels. Hafthor Bjornson is pretty close to my age, but he looks 10 years older just because of how high his testosterone levels are for strongman; as he switched to boxing, he started to look younger. Larry Wheels has a compilation of how steroid usage changed his face, and when lowering the usage, looked like he de-aged a decade. Also, men, historically, had higher testosterone levels, which contributes to the idea that young men in the 40s & 50s look older than young men nowadays. So, I would just attribute this guy looking older due to higher testosterone levels.

And back then you had to wait, now it’s all so fast and people have no patience. They go mad if they are left with a read message and won’t get a response immediately and people feel like they have to justify themselves if they don’t reply right away. So sad. And the same reflects on relationships. People want it all and immediately. At the first thing they don’t like, next. It doesn’t work like that. They’ll never have a happy relationship or a relationship for that matter. I used to write letters to my friends who lived in a different city and had to wait a couple weeks to receive their response. Then mobile phones arrived with the text system. We were so excited as we could talk all the time. But in the end we didn’t really have much to say and it wasn’t as valuable. I mean when you had to write a letter, you would chose your words carefully and really think about what to say, because if you forgot to say something you had to wait to write it in the next letter.

I miss 1998. Pretty much all of the 90s. Life was more peaceful. I was in 6th grade. The world wide web was coming out. Schools had these colored Mac PCs monitors. It make this annoying sound. You couldnt be on the phone at the same time as the internet. Channel One News with Lisa ling came on every single morning at 1st period. We played outside all night. Riding our bikes. Going to mcdonalds and getting 35 cents cheeseburgers. I remember my friend had a little pager and that meant he had to go home when it beeped. We would rollerblade with our dog on a leash. Carry our cd players. Life was just more relaxed. I miss my childhood. If you liked a girl or boy at school. You just slip a note into their locker. Arcade was favorite place to be beside the roller rink. When you called a girl or boy you liked their parents would answer the phone. Which was nerve racking and scary. Blockbuster video and Hollywood video stores were the place to get the lastest movie rentals and video games for Nintendo 64 and Super Nintendo. If you wanted to call for pizza you would open this big yellow phone book called Dex. Saturday morning cartoons. Power rangers. Teenage ninja turtles. Life with louis. Recess. Afternoon cartoons was big bad beetle borgs. Tiny toons. Hey arthur. Wishbone. Imagination station. Zoom come on and zoom. Bill nye science guy. For older kids there was tv station called the box where you could call to make music video request. They would place in captions if you wanted to send a message to a friend. People began getting caller ID boxes which would hook up to the house phone. If someone called it would show the number of who was calling. Also when it came to dating it usually be with friends that become more or a setup. A setup was when your family or friends set you up with someone they knew. Also blind dates and 3rd wheel dating shows were huge in the 90s. Most doctors carried pagers with them. For adults tv shows included Martin. Living single. Friends. NYPD Blue. In living color. ER. My mom made us watch ER. She had always thought George Clooney was a handsome doctor. They had abc family night tv which included boy meets world. family matters. Step by step. There was seinfield. Frazier. Major dad. Designing women. Home improvement. Ton of soap operas. Ahhh the 90s. Like this gentleman says everything was social connections.

But I suspect what’s missing from the dating app experience, and again I don’t know because I’ve never used one, is that magic, spontaneous moment in an unexpected place where the last thing on your mind is meeting someone and with a single glance from them or in their direction, this person you’ve never seen before and don’t know, your whole body just goes cold. It's because back then when you met someone for something they existed from somewhere or someone else you already know. You meet a pretty girl that's a friend's friend and someone ghosts someone, their social circles hear about how awful they are and the consequences of their actions on the other. Now people are complete strangers and it doesn't matter so we use and abuse one another.

This guy sounded so wholesome. I couldn’t have agreed more with his mention of “social connections.” I’ve never been on a date, but there have been several occasions where people have ghosted me and it didn’t seem to be such a problem for them. I didn’t give it much thought until now when I heard him mention it being “awful.” Being in that moment-showing up and waiting for that other person only for them to never appear-was an internally gruesome experience. It hurt a lot. Social connections, with whoever you’re close to, do matter.
