"Dasayaaro Raja" is a song sung by the Jenu Kuruba community during the puberty ceremony for a young girl. The Jenu Kuruba, a tribal community known for integrating songs and dances with nature in their rituals, perform this song for the girl who has reached puberty. The lyrics describe the preparations for the ceremony, including constructing a temporary bamboo structure and offering the girl flowers, fruits, and sesame-jaggery mixture (ellu bella).
Raghu M and fellow musicians from Girijana Samagra Abhivridhi Kalasamsthe, a cultural organization, performed this song in the video filmed in Mananthawady, Wayanadu.
The term 'Jenu' translates to "honey" in Kannada and their language, reflecting their traditional occupation of collecting honey in the forests of the Western Ghats for centuries.
Traditional forest dwellers, Jenu Kuruba are one of the most marginalized groups in Kerala and are classified as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group.
