There was in WW 2 an incident, when a German submarine tried to rescue shipwrecked Allied sailors with Italian POVs (the "Laconia" incident). After other uboats and an Italian submarine arrived they took in tow several lifeboats set the flag of the Red Cross and informed the Allies in an open radio call that they were on a rescue mission. But instead of recieving help the convoi was attacked by a US bomber, that hit several of lifeboats. As a result of the Laconia-incident the German submarines were prohibited to help shipwrecked sailors of enemy nations.

@@LuziBeerbaum The movie plays a bit loose with the timeline anyway. It is meant to take place in 41, but presents the situation of the u boat crews more like from 42 onwards. 41 was still part of the "Happy Times", when they were the bane of the convoys, before ASDIIC and such. Same with the attack on the harbor at the end. In 41, the british didn't have any (small) air craft capable of mounting an effective attack over that distance it'd take to get to the port. It's throwing the situation of the U-Boat fleet, Laconia and other stuff back into a 41 setting.

@@undertakernumberone1 Odd that they set it so early, I didn't realise that, I'd assumed 43 onwards, when the Allies material and technical superiority had begun to turn the tide. The stoic fatalism of the crew doesn't match it being 41, when they were attacking by night, overwhelming small escorts, without radar

i haven´t seen the movie in english but i saw the TV-Version (it´s 4 parts each 90 Minutes with much more scenes). In this version "Werner" later asked the "Kaleu (Captain)" why it was not possible to rescue the people. He responded quite angry "Can you tell me where to put those people on this boat? It´s not enough from everything for us ... !" And he had his orders from the Admiralty!

Fun fact: The actor who played the injured soldier was supposed to be replaced when he injured himself on set. Instead they decided to drive him from hospital to the set every day. In case you are wondering, Das Boot is an autbiographic book, Lothar-Günter Buchheim (Lt. Werner in this movie) and its part of a trillogie. The Captain, Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock, didnt die in the attacke. He was wounded and got promoted. The seond book "Die Festung/ the fortress" is set in 1944 when germany started to lose the war. Buchheim and the Captain met again during an evacuation. The third book "Der Abschied/Farewell" is set in the 1960. Lehmann-Willenbrock became a civilian captain after the war and was captain of germanys only ever, nuclear powered vessle the "Otto Hahn" On his last voyage before retirement, Buchheim was an honoured guest. Lehmann-Willenbrock did also visit the set during filming.

The 1930 All Quiet On The Western front is great as well and I "enjoyed" 1959 The Bridge very much. Another recommendation would be 1988 The Beast of War, US movie about soviet tankers in afghanistan. Has a cold war red scare touch to it, kinda cheesy at times, but also a gritty depiction of any cold war / middle eastern conflict (even filmed in Israel with tanks they had captured from prior conflicts). Also said to be the most realistic movie tank combat depiction

Imho the more background knowledge you have, the even better this movie gets, simply because you can better appreciate how accurately details are portrayed. For example, higher pressure in greater water depth limits the range at which depth charges can damage the boat, so the deeper they go, the better are the chances of surviving the bombardment, but also if the hull leaks, the harder it gets to stop flooding. All factors that a capable submarine commander had to consider. Incidentally, the scene where the sailor goes overboard in the storm was not in the script at all, but was an actual accident that happened during filming. But then all of the actors were so much involved in their roles that they actually reacted as real sailors would have done in this situation and it worked so well that the scene was cut into the finished film. Or the scenes when they are bombed by the plane in the Strait of Gibraltar and the commander orders them to run at the surface as fast as possible on a course of 180 degrees, i.e. directly south ("Alles, was drin ist, LI!!!"). His intention is to run the boat aground on the African coast, which at the end saves them. The 'trunks' they use to breathe in the scenes while the boat is lying on the ground are in fact not oxygen devices, but CO2 scrubbers so that they don't die of carbon dioxide poisoning. Today even recreational divers can use closed-cycle-rebreathers based on this technology (by now even working quite reliably). The scenes in which they torpedo the tanker and you see the burning sailors jumping off the ship after the impact are also immensely gripping, when the feeling of remorse spreading among the men immediately afterwards, something that normally only the Captain had to deal with, because usually he was the only one who could see through the periscope. There are also several moments in the film in which brief remarks of the crew make clear that they don't really feel hostility towards the sailors on the other side, because they are aware that they all struggle with a common enemy: the sea, which makes no difference who it drowns. Without doubt, Das Boot is definitly one of the best movies ever made.

I just wanted to add to the allied ship sinking scene. Normally sailors helped each other, no country or sailor wants to see other sailors drown... There are multiple reasons why they didnt rescue the sailors, the first and obvious one is space, they have non. A nother sad reason is that there was a incident with the ship Laconia it was sunk by a u-boat and the crew decided to rescue as many sailors and passengers as possible, this was done by carrying many on the deck and towing the survival boats. They even radioed out to everyone near german and allied to rescue there men... They had flown the red cross flag and all... A US figther plane got permission to shoot at the u-boats and did so! Killing many of there fellow Allies and non of the germans, they obviously didnt stick around after that, cut the ropes and dived! Leaving the people behind, after that a order was given to never again try to rescue the allies. And somehow the people responsible for this giant fuckup got medals for that...

The deeper a U-Boat dived, the increasing water pressure (one atmosphere every 10m deeper) reduced the kill raduis of depth charges, until the water pressure itself crushed the subs pressure hull. Allied escorts sonar analyses reported U-Boats achieving ~238m/~750ft depths.

Thumbs up! :) I sensed from your remarks about the submarine crew being quiet & whispering, that you are not aware, that the ships above can HEAR the noises and voices from the submarine. It's not a fantasy plot invention to enhance the tension artificially, that they have to be quiet and are whispering. The ships really can hear the people in the submarine with their listening devices. The attacking aircraft at Gibraltar was a British aircraft. The Spaniards didn't fight against the Germans. They were neutral with slight sympathies towards Germany because they had the same ideology at power back then. Gibraltar is a small part of Spain that belongs to Britain because of an old battle and a British conquest back in history.

About the shame of Johann´s breakdown: I think it scares everyone, because they are all at the edge, at the absolute limit of what they can take, and they know it could have been any single one of them (XO is very close to breaking at one point, when he yell´s "we´re going down!", which he absolutely shouldn´t have as an officer), but they also know, operating the boat takes the full attention of every sailor. Anyone not focusing, expecially while the boat is fallign apart under bombs, puts the life of 46 sailors at risks. Every one know their life depends on 45 others staying focused. And the captain can´t afford a panic to develop, it would kill everyone. Plus, the german navy had very strict rules. And they all like Johann. So it´s an extremely tense situation with very very mixed emotions, and a lot of them.

A couple of years after WW1, Roman Demouski of Poland openly proclaimed that the territories of Danzig, (German land), granted to this newly created nation of Poland was merely a down payment on a much greater Poland. Directly after WW1, Poland began to build it's military and as late as 1938, had attacked the Soviet Union, Lithuwania, Germany and the Check Republic, and even annexed boarder land of regions of neighboring countries. Until 1934 conflicts between Poland and Germany smoldered. In the previous year just after Hitler was appointed chancellor, the Polish head of state, Marshal Polzuski had sought to enlist France with the purpose of creating a bi-lateral attack against Germany. France declined, so Poland changed tactics. A bi-lateral treaty was signed by France, however similar talks with France and POlandcontinued under a veil of treaty pretense on th etopic of Danzig. Hitler negotiates an agreement with Poland to formally recognize both east and west Prussia to Poland as their territory and in return that Germany could build a new railway into the port city of Danzig, but that the city of Danzig would remain under Polish economic control. But in March of 1939, even as Germany is looking for a peaceful settlement Poland is already preparing for war against Germany. In Feb. of 1939 the Polish general staff develops guidelines for a military operation against Germany. In March 4th, 1939, Polish military staff begin "Operation West", a full month before Hitler orders the leadership of the Vermach to commence work on an attack against Poland. At this point, England and France had already placed their bets on Poland winning. On May 15th, the French chief of Staff, General Gamalene assured the Polish minister of war, General Kasbriski, that in case of war the French army would attack with all it's might the western border of Germany. This served to support Poland's anti-German stance. Poland was encouraged by this promise and from then on became increasingly undiplomatic towards Germany. While the British, French and Poles continued to shore each other up for an impending war with Germany, Hitler continues to pursue negotiations with Poland. Bolstered by France and England, Poland a started publicly circulating newly drawn maps of Poland all the way into Germany up to the city of Berlin. This started the German ethnic "clensing" in Poland, onto Germans in th ecity of Danzig. Thousands of Germans were rounded up and transported into the Polish Interior. German stores in Poland are boycotted, their farms were torched and set on fire, and Polish military repeatedly fired at German transport aircraft. In July-Aug. of 1939, increasing violent attacks on Germans forced 80,000 of them to become refugees fleeing to Germany. In the summer of 1939, Hitler orders the deployment of 54 divisions towards the German/Polish border. Hitler continues to negotiate with Poland but England and France again interferes and tells Warsaw officials they had their back and not to agree with anything the Germans offered. Hitler orders his troops to cross into Poland to stop the slaughter of Germans within Poland and that was the excuse the allies needed to officially declare war on Germany.

Allied tactics used multiple destroyers to hunt the U-Boats. While a ship is moving quickly it is difficult to hear with its hydrophones so a lot of times one destroyer would go dead in the water to listen and direct the others to the position. Hydrophones are passive but Asdiic (sonar) is active. What’s not really brought up much is after depth charges explode it disturbs and creates a lot tiny air bubbles in the water that can give false signals to the sonar for around 15 minutes. The movie greyhound kind of shows this when after they depth charge a U-Boat the sonar operator said “indications confused” from the signals.

Thanks for reviewing this excellent film. One thing I really like about this film is that it captures the fog of war quite well. For a lot of the film, the crew doesn't know exactly where they are or where other German u-boats are. They are just doing the best they can with what limited information they have available.

The deepest documented dive depth is made by U703 that rushed down to 290m during a depth charge attack, before its falling could be stopped by the crew! For comparison: Modern ones can (officially, but not confirmed) reach 1200 meters. U703 and its 54 crew have been missing in Arctic waters since September 25, 1944! It is unclear whether it fell victim to a mine or sank as a result of an Arctic storm. No debris or bodies were found!

I watched the mini-series version of the movie (which is even longer than the extended director's cut) on Norwegian TV back in the mid-late 1980s and loved it - think it's one of the best war-movies (and the best sub-movie) ever made! Although the pace of the mini-series is slower, you get to know the crew even better - thus caring even more for them. It also more room for humor (like a drunk Thomsen thinking a phone ringing at the bar is an ALARM!) and more about the running of the sub (why they do what they do).

There are other good war films that were made in Germany in the early 1950s. In some cases, original materials such as uniforms and medals and also small vehicles were used because these things were still available in sufficient quantities. These films were shot in black and white. Unfortunately I don't know if there are subtitles for it. I like that in these films the language and military terms were all used correctly, not like in newer films about the time. Like there are films like: " Die Brücke " ( The Bridge ) von 1957 von Bernhard Vicki , " Dogs, do you want to live forever " , " U-47 Captain Lieutenant Prien and " Night fell over Gotenhafen " . The film titles were of course in German, only translated here. However, these films bring the viewer as close as possible to the time because the tone, the language, and military details were as correct as they could be.

That is 18,000 Parts Per Million (PPM), and sources say that 40,000 PPM is an immediate danger to life and health. Interesting that they were about half way to significant CO² poisoning (100,000 PPM you are dead for sure). Side Note: Global average CO² concentration is currently around 420 PPM. It is estimated to have been as high as 9000 PPM in the past, possibly more.

Thank you very much for watching this masterpiece! What makes this movie so special in my opinion is the fact, it shows the horror of war from the perspective of a common soldier, besides ideologies and black and white thinking. I visited 2 submarines in my life, the actual film set in the studio in Munich and a real one from WW2 in Northern Germany, which is part of a museum now. Especially the second one makes you think if you're walking through it, having in mind that about 30-40 people living in this tiny space for weeks. There is also a sign which is about the commander of this boat who got the nick name "old guy" by his crew. He was in his 20s when he commanded this ship... If this movie has a moral than this: war never has a winner, it always leaves broken souls, minds and hearts behind, on EVERY side.

I felt the same way about this movie as you guys. The ending is a punch to the gut, but I think it really makes the movie better in hindsight. Had they ended the movie on a happy note, it would not have felt so realistic. This movie is perhaps one of the best WWII movies ever made. What Americans, Brits and German submarines experienced in the Atlantic is a nightmare. I've seen many videos and stories of WWII submariners after they watched this movie and they say that it's the best submarine war film ever and especially the Germans said it was so realistic that it triggered PTSD and gave some flashbacks, in the same way that Saving Private Ryan had veterans from the actual Normandy invasion reacted because it was so real, and many of them had to walk out of the movie theaters because it was so accurate that it felt real.

Spain was neutral, because they had just had the Spanish Civil War in 1936-1939, in which fascist dictator General Francisco Franco was installed into power with help from Germany and Italy. Spain was too destroyed to contribute much to another big war, and General Franco saw no advantage for Spain in joining in on the side of Germany and Italy. So those planes that attack the U-Boat in the Gibralter Strait are meant to be British, not Spanish. Gibralter is just big enough for a small airfield, as well as a port and a fortress and lots of naval guns to be able to control the western exit from the Mediterranean Sea into the Atlantic Ocean.

Nicely done. There is a “Making of” video on KZread. Filming this film was extremely dangerous and extremely awkward. There is also an American essay on the symbolism of the elements: The Descent into Hell (Diving) and The Emergence. This film says a lot about the German mentality: There is no hero. Essentially, it's a movie about "good men trying to do a good job." If you do your best, even failure is forgiven (Johann). The leader is a father figure, both demanding and caring. Everyone trusts him. But what to do when the leader is a loser (World War I) or a crook (World War II)? Getting out was not an option. There are only two German films from World War II that come close to “Das Boot”: “Downfall” and “Die Brücke” (from the 1950s).
