DART 200cc "IRON EAGLE" from "DIRT MODIFIED" 358ci, 630+hp SBC. Ported & Milled.

Checking out a pair of heavily modified 2013 Ported & milled DART IRON EAGLE PLATINUM angleplug heads from a Northeastern Dirt Modified 358ci racing engine making north of 630hp/520tq built back in 2013. These heads are super trick, angle milled, valves rolled over to 21 degrees, and have a long list of other modifications done to them. Flow well over 300cfm @ .700 lift. Used with a 273/283,@050, 675/645 lift, 106 lobe separation with 1.55 ratio rockers for 690/660 lift. and 14.5-1 compression. Big DART singleplane goes on them. Cam is advertised at 4200/8200rpm. In a 358 I'd say 5200-8200rpm. I'm gonna cruise it around on the street & race it.

    I said in the video that they discontinued these heads Jan 1st 2013, but i ment to say Jan 1st 2023. These heads were cast july 23 2013. About 11 yrs old. Dart just pulled the plug about a year and a half ago. They sold those heads since the late 1990s.

    You might want to have the intake to head mounting face milled to correct the angle and because so much was cut off of the bottom. Guys usually will have the intake milled to correct the mismatch when it's the heads that are causing it. Mill the heads where the intake bolts on and any intake will now bolt on. Mill the intake and now only that intake will bolt on. Also when you go to use those make sure you have deep pockets. That is deep valve relief pockets because of all the material milled off the heads so your 3/4" race cam will have clearance.(The other meaning of deep pockets helps to😁) Also make sure that the bolt holes were spot faced after the angle milling so the bolt shoulders clamp down evenly. I'm sure you know all this but you didn't mention what it takes to use a set of heads that are altered to that degree. Cool set of heads by the way. Sad that Dart isn't making those anymore, they're only about 15 miles from me. Didn't the company get sold? That's why I think they're doing a lot more outsourcing. George Delorean(John's brother) used to work there, I had a long conversation with him about 10 years ago when he was still there semi-retired. A friend of mine I was building an engine for knew him and had me call him to discuss his engine build. Very cool guy, wish I recorded that conversation.😎👍

    Takes alot of work to use these heads, but that's ok, these heads have been finished for years. They were angle milled, then came back and flat milled. So the intake face is correct. I have a few intakes that are milled that will work with these. Big DART singleplane is the one probably going on them. Also have a Super Victor and a couple older Vic Jr's that have been extremely modified and milled. It's good to have 50+SBC intakes. Many already came off similar type engines. I have a set of JE pistons that will work with these too. I found a good deal on a Reath crank, BRC aluminium rods and BRC pistons, all balanced and never used. Guy that was building that engine died and the shit has sat around for years. But with those pistons it will be 14.5-1 or better. Pretty nice shit.

    These heads came off a Dirt Modified racing engine that was used 2 races. They already have them pretty sorted out. The original owner spent a shitload of money on that engine. Lots of tricks.

    Yep, DART got sold out a few years ago. Believe Dick Maskins died. Now the company is owned by the people that own everything else. Most of the heads they used to sell are no longer available. The new SHP heads are cast overseas. The price on those came down tho. $1200 bucks will buy a new pair of SHP 200s. Pretty good deal. Can't get most of their bigblock heads anymore either. DART ain't what they used to be.

    I try to keep my videos at 20 minutes or less, seems most people's attention spans run out past that. So I leave alot of details out that I'd like to put in, but the video would take an hour. Plus I'm usually about to pass out when I make these videos. Generally after an all nighter when I do these videos. Sometimes I'll get into a project and don't stop for 2 days straight. When I start passing out in my chair, I know it's time to go lay down. The older I get, the less I like to sleep.

    Was just checking angles and thickness on these heads, turns out the intake face is milled to compensate for the radical angle mill, it's milled about a 1/4 inch above the intake ports down. Believe the head was milled .200 thousands of an inch. So the chambers are actually around 48cc. Gonna run with a .026 thick head gasket and zero deck. 4.040x3.500. Should be around 358ci. It will make 600+hp NA. Might run a 1050 Dominator on it. Going with a DART 4500 flange singleplane intake. Definitely race fuel only. Might set it up to run on E85. Compression will be over 13.5-1. Like to drop it in my Camaro and run high 9s in the 1/4 NA. It'll be a 8000+rpm unit. Camaro weighs in the 2600lb range. I'm currently gathering parts to build a fabricated 9 inch that'll hold 1500+hp, so the sky is the limit. Believe the axle housing tubes are 3/8 thick steel. All gusseted up and shit. It's a monster. Going with a aluminum center section too and 40 spline axles. Eventually I'm gonna drop a bigblock in it, maybe with twin Turbos. I already have all the shit to do it. But I don't think a Australian Borg Warner 9 bolt rearend will handle it. Also have a super stout T-400 to go in it. 3.5 inch custom driveshaft with solid 1350 u-joints. The car has been fast for decades, but I want to take it to the next level. A 1200-1400 hp bigblock will take it there. 20lbs of boost on a 496 will make that pretty easy.

    Nice score!.. It seems counter intuitive that having the bolt tubes in there would flow more than a a nicely countoured wall around the bolts. The tubes seem like they would create turbulence. Is there even more milled out behind the tubes so air can go completely around them that the camara can't see? Love your videos. Thanks for taking the time to make them.

    Yep, they are opened up pretty big. The tubes don't hurt nothing. These heads flow quite well. Engine made alot of power for 358 cubes.

    You think it could benefit from floor filling?

  • @thereluctantgearhead4544

    @thereluctantgearhead4544

    Maybe, but the floor is low because so much was milled off the bottom. These heads made over 630hp 11 yrs ago on a 358ci SBC, so they did pretty good as is. They were angle milled, then flat milled. Valves are now at 21 degree.

    Hey chief I’m doing a 327 build for my 59 el Camino, I need some expert advice. I’m thinking of doing a Howard’s roller cam Lift: .525 / .525, Duration @ .050: 225 / 225, Centerline: 106 As well as going with the Howard’s retro fit street lifters. I don’t want to build a monster I just want something fun. My question is what kind of rocker arms should I go with? & I haven’t bought heads yet but I’m thinking either AFR enforcer, Brodix ik200, Promaxx200. What do you think is the best choice heads? I know they are in the cheaper side for aluminum heads. Any other things I need to get? Besides proper length pushrods and a good set of head bolts.

    Out off those 3 heads, the Promaxx will make the most power. I own all 3 sets myself. I like to use Scorpion or Harland Sharp rockers with those heads. You could bump that cam up and still have no drawbacks and make more power. Id want to at least run .550 to .600 lift or more to get the flow from the heads. Ports are about a 1206 also, so run a good singleplane intake like a Super Victor or Holley Strip Dominator. I have a Strip Dominator on my Promaxx heads and it fits like it was made for them. I use a Super Victor on my Pro 1s, and a Brodix singleplane on my IK Brodix heads. I'm building a old school drag race 327 myself now. It's going to be a 8000+rpm screamer tho. BME Aluminum rods and shit, 13.5- compression, 272/282@.050, 650/641 lift, 110 lobe separation. Using ported vintage Crane Fireball angleplug 292 heads on it. Either a modified Strip Dominator & 830 Holley or a Holley Tunnelram with twin 660 center squirt Holleys with 1 to 1 linkages. Looking for an old 48-52 Chevy to put it in and build a old school gasser. A 53/54 would work too.

    Get adjustable pushrod guideplates for any of them heads. And make sure your springs will work with your cam. 7/16 studs always a good idea too. Mahle .026 thick graphite head gaskets are what I use on a lot of them. Work real well, bore is only 4.125 and .026 compressed thickness. Used to be a Detroit/ Victor Renze gasket, but Mahle bought them out. Believe it's sold as a marine gasket. You'll need 1206 Fel Pro intake gaskets. ARP 134-3601 head bolts are the bolts you should use. Chamfer on the bolt washer always goes up. Devil's in the details.
