Darne Model 1892 Rotary Shotgun
The most popular shotgun made by the French Darne company was their 1897 sliding breech side-by-side, which saw sales and use worldwide. Before that, however, Darne invented a rotating breechblock system - first a series of external hammer varieties in the 1880s and then this hammerless Model 1892. It is a great example of a functional, creative, and interesting system that simply never became popular.

Every time i watch one of these videos on some of these older gun designs I'm blown away by the craftsmanship they used back then.
Double barrel shotguns are a fine piece of art.

@@daviddavidson2357 Please do not use art for unlawful purposes. It makes abstract painters like myself seem like I'm trying to use my art for intimidation. I just want you to see what you think you want to feel it is. Smearing paint is fun. Finding out that a baddie is still in your home after you illegally wasted your last two rounds of pheasant hunting loads is most certainly not. It you use your weapons lawfully to protect your family at home I'm sure the art you create with the baddie's soul, heart & blood could make a decent Jackson Pollack kinda-sorta.
This right here is why I will always try to buy older firearms than brand new ones!. They're way more unique build and function wise and there story is usually pretty damn good. I had a chance to shoot a $75k dollar shotgun once and I will never forget that just amazing craftsmanship and the inlay work was beautiful!. Edit: It was hand made by Purdey if you wanted to know and again one amazing shotgun!.

This is not boring. I like seeing all these innovations. Even if they were not successful, they are interesting. I hope to see the slide action model in the future.

Fascinating piece. When you worked that action the first time i let out an honest "woah". unique and mechanically interesting. great job Ian.
When a functional design doesn't live beyond trials: 😰.
At 4:20 the face is screaming "Aah, put me back, put me back!"
I think that it is a very elegant design, i like it.
Beautiful Firearm with a Clever Mechanism! Thank You Gunguru Ian!
I love that design I can't believe it didn't catch on

Not really all that surprising to me. Compared to a standard break-open shotgun, it looks like it would be heavier, take longer to reload, and was probably much more expensive.
@Jesses001
8 жыл бұрын
It is listed as being rather light, it should be just as fast as a break action, but I can not imagine a way to affordably manufacture that thing at all. All the cams and tight action, all I see is money burned away at a milling machine.

Well it is very cool, and I'd buy that for sure. It's just a lot of extra steps, and stuff, when other guns were being sold a lot simpler.

+Regolith Exactly, way too complex compared to a break action
@phoenixinvictus9880

Another thing is that when reloading, the hot shells would be extracted directly towards your firing hand. You can move your hand of course, but this style likely wouldn't allow as fluid a reload as a break-action.
why did this system never catch on? it seems really great.

haha [5 years later] I was thinking the same thing. I would have been one of the people who saved money to buy one. Moving the breech forward just makes sense to me. Beautifully made gun.

That's a fascinating design. Thanks for sharing yet another example of unusual weaponry Ian. 😎
I was surprised when you rotated the block and the stock didn't move. For some reason I thought it would. I think it's an interesting design that is quite novel. Another great choice in weapons to show us in a video. Thanks !
I've got to hold one of the Darne slide action shotguns. Felt very nice. Been wanting one for a very long time. Didn't know he made another type of action. Very cool.

That is a really really cool shotgun, and I wasn't expecting it when he turned the stock and the shotgun came apart in half. Which is even cooler than it breaks down so you can put it in a smaller case.
I like it! It's amazing how many clever ways that have been devised to move cartridges and open/close chambers.
Surprisingly simple and ingenious mechanism. I'd love to see one of his sliding breech guns if you can ever get a hold of one.
If this wasn't over 150 years old, I would say this is amazingly innovative!
Watched this on the big screen, thank you for showing us this beautiful design, why it didn't catch on I will never know it is brilliant! Love your work!

Lol, those "Darne Machine Guns" didn't do too well haha, thanks for the upload Ian, love the channel.
Gosh Darne, that is one fancy shotgun!
Very cool, makes you wish they still made them.
Darne also made a double barrel repeater on that sliding breech Ian mentioned. Two in the chambers, and two more in single shell "magazines" below each barrel. Load up, fire two, rack the lever, and fire two more.
That is one interesting piece, one more on the wish list.
i would love to get my hands on one of these, seems like a fun gun to use. if i had money i would totally bid on one of them.
Wow that’s a very cool shotgun,love it!!
So simple and elegant. And by the block assembly pretty easy to change parts.
Cool video as always Ian!
If you look closely at 4:27, you can see Darne looking very surprised he’s in Ian’s hands
If I saw something like this on kickstarter i would totally support it.
It would be nice to see a similar video from the Darne sliding action shotguns too.
I hope you get a chance to look at one of his slide breaches as well. They are great. I am surprised they do not still make them.
Between this and that mystery under over with the two side pivoting breech blocks, I really want to start collecting unique shotguns.
...there's a not any boring time with Ian

Never thought I'd find a shotgun video interesting, but I did. Looking at the intricacies of the various metal machining angles, perhaps the Forgotten Weapon's crew could make a video explaining how in the 18th to early 19th century, people were able to machine such complex looking firearms.
