Darlene Chronicles Documentary update - The children and answering questions.

Ойын-сауық

I return to the original home of Darlene from the PSU documentary "The Darlene Chronicles" so that I could give a quick update and address a few of the questions from my previous two videos.
I also spent time in the area researching and filming for my final part 3 of the series that I plan on releasing in the spring.

Remembering the scenes with the children in the original documentary and now seeing where it was filmed, the house gone and the location so silent, then learning that three of the children have already passed. So hauntingly sad.

She never picked up her babies.. Her older girl beat the crap out of her baby doll, made me feel like that's how Darlene treated her babies when no one was there to see.

I posted this earlier. I think Darlene is just very sad. I feel inadequate to judge. Extreme poverty leads to a lot of things. I have never had to live without power, carry buckets of water, had that many children so close in age with no money, etc. We know mothering skills are taught by those before us. Chances are, that's how she was raised. Thus being normal to her. 😢

Such a sad situation those kids had to grow up in. Especially Tracy. Now only Terry and Bonnie are left, and they live so far apart from each other. Agreed. My mom and her brothers grew up in a house not near as bad as this one but there was no bathroom and I'm not sure about running water but to this day, my mom is still bitter in memory of her dad for letting them live the way they did. The house was torn down several years ago.

You know, I’ve watched the films Penn State on Darlene, and maybe I am naive but shame on them! They could have had a large fundraiser with all their board members, professors and associates that could have bought her at the very least a mobile home. Many churches, small ones, do this very thing in nearby places. It saddens me that she never received a decent home💔 And even more, parenting classes!

This was an incredible documentary that i have loved. I've read a good bit of comments in regards to Darlene. I don't think she did anything that wasn't done to her. She's ( to me) a tragic example of poverty and lack of education. I hope the lessons learned from watching this stick with people. Darlene lived a hard life that probably would have affected as anyone. I can't say how I'd have turned out, because I didn't live it. Darlene and her family lived in the hollow just over the hill from where I live. Seeing the documentary was very surprising to us. We never thought of ourselves as poor people. Yes, we always knew that the mountains that make up our region are the Appalachians, but we weren't hillbillies as portrayed in the Darlene Chronicles documentary. Tracey, poor Tracey looked wrecked by the time she was 28 years, Roy was an alclholic at a very young age and Blair, according to his mummy dearest, never wanted to work. Such a shame. But fascinating. Thanks so much for the time and effort you have put into PJ's wish. Jah bless !

I watched the Darlene chronicles I don't know how many times and the first time was years ago. I felt so bad for the kids, sometimes Darlene would make it obvious how she favored some more than others and I felt as if some were so broken especially when it came to their fathers even though it was obvious what kids were paul's and what kids were John's they genuinely didn't know. Anyway what Im trying to say was that I watched for the cringe as horrible as that sounds I can't deny it and I never thought that hearing all this new info would affect me the way it did. It saddens me, but it doesn't really surprise me because they had a very hard life. I wished it had turned out different for the kids but then again how could it. My prayers go out to the remaining family. May God bless them.

What’s heartbreaking is in the United States there’s no reason people should live like this and I’ve said this for over 50 years. We have a wealthy country that’s able to give money to other countries that don’t like us but we can’t help our own? It’s never made sense to me.. also the millionaires and billionaires that we have in this country , sports figures, they could give a new home with indoor plumbing to these people , furniture and food, and it wouldn’t make a dent in their salary.

Enjoyed watching your update on this family. I have been drawn to the original Darlene Chronicles ever since I first watched it a few years ago. It is such a sad way that so many people have to live in, almost without hope and it shouldn’t be that way in our country! I don’t know what the answer is for poverty in America but I pray for people that are stuck in that lifestyle. I know many around where I live in Arkansas/ Oklahoma area that are just like this family. I hope you get to give us more updates and thank you for caring enough to bring us these memories.

I’m from Arkansas, still live here and I know families that live in abject poverty. I went to grade school with a girl that was poor, albeit she had it better than Darlene and the kids. I took some food over to where she’s living at now, and her situation has gotten worse. I’m not so sure she’s better off than Darlene and those kids now. She has running water and electricity (I think?) but her house was on par structurally with that cabin Darlene lived in.

Darlene did what she knew. Reactive parenting. She constantly reprimanded her kids with smacks and whacks. Thats how many corrected their kids. Didn't occur to show them the right way to do anything, just a whack for the wrong thing. They had a hard life. That's why they didn't live to a ripe old age. I think Darlene tolerated her life by injecting the excitement of romance into it. Maybe she's narcissistic and needs constant attention and drama and Bud wasn't enough. None of those kids felt any love though I think Darlene enjoyed the role of mother. Pity she couldn't have played it better. I'll look forward to an update. Loved the docos.

Yeah it's a very interesting documentary on Appalachian life in Pennsylvania. Penn State University started interviewing her in 1970. She was raising her kids in that hunting shack with no running water. But they stopped back periodically over a 25 year period. My wife watched it a few times and I wasn't interested until I realized that I grew up close to where she lived. Then I watched it myself and found it fascinating. The producer passed away but at the end of the series he stated that he wondered if someone else would continue with the story in 25 years. That kind of stuck with me and I decided to be the one.

Thank you for correcting that the shed is what is standing. Your first video indicated the house as the shed. I am still interested in what happened to Darlene, Tracy, and Roy. Bud and Bob as well, actually. They didn't have much of a chance given their starts in life. The kids died fairly young. It's hard for some to imagine that people actually lived this way, but honestly, back then, there were no child protection services. People kept their business in the family. Hitting, cussing, and whooping kids was normal. Even strangers would smack a kid for being disrespectful or misbehaving. This didn't just happen in Appalachia. It was common most everywhere. Today, folks get all bent out of shape, but then vs. now was an entirely different Era. Frankly, the entitled and disrespectful youth of today could use a good smack or two. Instead of being coddled and put in time out. Before you come at me, take a good look around. What's happening to our youth is a reflection of society and should not come as a surprise. I worry for our future.

There's a big difference between an occasional smack on the bum and the constant hitting of an abusive household. Darlene didn't even try to correct her children before hitting them. She was angry and broken and I think late in her life you can see that she realized she was wrong.

  • @runningintohistory

I am not sure about the third house yet. Its in Johnstown. The structure series is a screen shot from the documentary with the old car in it compared to a photo I took yesterday standing in a similar position on the road in front of Darlene's cabin. All of the overlays start with a screen shot from the original documentary and fade into a photo I took yesterday then fade back to the documentary photo.

I hope that they can all come together again. That the kids see that she loves them. Ppl do the vest they can sometimes. With what they have to give from within. It took me awhile years to learn things. Growing up with an alcoholic parent. That I wished I'd learned sooner. That would have helped me. With the relationship with that parent. Being the most compassionate person in life. You can be even with not understanding the struggles. That lies within ppl from what they endured growing up. Is critical in this life we live today. I now strive just to be the best person. I can be with others in this life. So oneday I to can live with the Lord. After leaving this life I sure don't want to go to hell. After enduring what I have here. Due to my choices or others choices for me. To cause me pain and hardship. We only live once getting it right takes time. I'd say don't waste time with thinking how others. Can be better in it. Doing that alone shows there is still more growing. You need to do it's easier to say. Or think what others should do always. Then it is to just be the best you. By not looking down on others. Or critizing them for the wrong they did. Even if it was to you. They don't say sorry for it. The growth inside you for the best. Will help with that in life as you mature. Nit alot of ppl get to have someone in their life. Whose been blessed to see 100. If you have that then let that be a guide for you. To help you I believe those ppl. Have been blessed by the Lord above. That they lived a pleasing life to him. So their words of wisdom to the young ppl. Matters and is critical in a time where. Evil is staggering no one is above enduring it now. Not even the innocent who don't know what it is yet. So I pray we all be and do the best we can. For others in this life more then self. What do you gain if it's all about you. Nothing at all but the road to loneliness. Misery and regret on what you wish. Doesn't have to be that way. Because in this moment you have to change and do better. Take the opportunity to do it. When it matters most.
