This video took a fat minute to write and edit, so as a small channel, the support really means so much to me ❤. A couple notes covering things I've seen come up in several comments: 1) The FromSoft portion of the video begins at 12:50. Dark Souls III specifically at 17:15. 2) I have revisited Bloodborne and am nearly done with my platinum run through. 3) I have logged some serious hours into MGSV and love the game, although I am still under the impression it shipped with a significant amount of missing content. Also PLEASE give me some feedback on what game you’d want to see covered in this essay style format. I’m currently thinking TLOUII?

Sekiro and Lies of Pinocchio are both worth of this format. LOP is smth between Bloodborne and Sekiro, best of both. And i'm happy that someone had a similar or almost the same story (experience) as me, meaning ER and then DS3. I've just googled more, so i wanted to to beat ER without summons and fancy weapons, wanted to beat game just with quality build and nothing fancy for first time. The guys on reddit and discord said magic and stuff was good for second playthrough, so that was my meta, to play it as basic dark souls. It was "little" harder, and took me 2x more time, like 120 hours to fully complete game, but all the time was 10x more worth it. Best achviement for me was killing Malenia with the "Let me solo her" style. It took me 2 weeks like 2-3 hours a day. But that satisfaction

I am experiencing the same with Bloodborne. Any accomplishment I want, I have to put in the blood, sweat, and tears to obtain. Analyze the enemies I get stuck on an study their moves to find their patterns. With the lack of a shield or many ranged weapons, the only way forward is to be aggressive but not greedy. And most importantly, don’t be afraid to lose or fail. The gameplay is challenging yet also intoxicating, the story and lore are hidden yet also deep. This game is truly an awe inspiring experience.

I love that feeling in these kinds of games. When at the beginning you're like, "I don't think I can do this". And then after a few tries, you get the hang of more and more moves. You change from a passive mindset to a more active and aggressive one. Before you know it, you're at the final boss going "I know I can beat this."

This is potentially one of the best video essays I've seen on this topic. And I would say - not just this topic - but rather also on the intricacies associated with it. I was cooking while I listened to your work. I peeked to my left, to where the monitor was, every now and then, and I was very much enthralled throughout. You had me nodding my head several times and giving me several aha moments before the video ended. There were even points when I stopped what I was doing for a few seconds out of a minor eureka shock you had given me. You were able to link so many concepts together quite clearly: concepts I myself hadn't really thought of before. One of these were points were on the entities competing for our attention. I never really did think of that before, but it makes so much sense. Your choice of music also is quite potent and fitting throughout. Except for the minor lack of audio towards the very last seconds of the video, everything was immensely, professionally well made. Beautiful work, beautiful work. And I am excited to hear more from you. And I am excited to see you blossom onward alongside your contemporaries. You very much deserve it. You have earned yourself a follower and subscriber.

There are so many games that have changed my life, the likes of which being souls games, red dead, and undertale. I started playing games after a long time to get through a rough patch in life and what’s kinda sad is one of my happiest moments in life was beating the nameless king after 108 tries (really bad I know I had a crappy build) I was literally crying and barely breathing. DS3 has definitely had an impact in my life and how I approach problems and things I need to do. I feel this is an issue with most content creators. While I applaud taking the time to set the scene and properly insert the subject into context, there's too much of this masturbatory "essay" mentally that goes on and on to add faux gravitas. It's like trying to avoid the "style over substance" situation, only that too much substance becomes style, ironically. Detail is good as long as it's focused. Get to the point, less is more, etc.

I genuinely agree with this criticism of the video as it currently stands. Thing is, from my end, it's more of a title/thumbnail issue than the content of the writing. The video was initially titled "How Dark Souls III Defeats Modern Gaming". I was hoping this would create the expectation that some of the video would be about "modern gaming". Unfortunately, KZread wasn't showing the video to people with this title, so I switched it to something more concise and "click-able". The video covers multiple topics and it's hard to put that all in a short title. I did my best and i think the result is still not optimal, as you pointed out. It was a good learning experience for me to think of the thumbnail, title and entire essay from a viewer perspective, and stick closer to one topic next time. Thanks for your feedback and for watching : )

Wow. In in utter shock. You put everything I have been feeling since i beat this game at 13 into words. For years I have lectured my friends and family on why ds3 is truly something else, yet i was never quite able to convay the sheer gravity of what i meant. Maybe it was this very feeling of uncompleteness that drove me to talk about it over and over again. Even to the point where my family had to ban talking about it during dinner time. And here it is, the reason why Dark Souls 3 is more than any piece of media I’ve ever encountered, expressed in words. I’m still firmly of the belief that it must be experienced to be understood, but this feels like it at least somewhat captures some essence of what makes Dark Souls 3 like a religious experience. At least for me anyway. Thankyou.

My experience was almost the same as yours. I started with Sekiro but dropped it because it was too hard for me at that time. Then Elden Ring was released. I tried it immediately and it really hooked me up for tons of hours, until I got stuck on some parts. I then looked for tutorials, tips, and tricks until I beat the game. I come back to Sekiro but am still looking for a guide on KZread. I really got interested in the Dark Souls series next, I beat DS 1 and 2, but I am still following Cowboy playthrough on KZread. Then, when it comes to Dark Souls 3, I want to really experience this game by myself, no guide, no tips or tricks, just a blind playthrough by myself, and god, I'm really glad I'm doing that. Now I can feel why Dark Souls is a masterpiece. It was a game that you should experience, explore, and learn by yourself. You level up together as the game character, and it will give you the most satisfying and unforgettable gaming experience.

Why can't anyone praise souls games without being utterly delusional and pretending that 99.9999% of modern gaming is some fucking gacha hellhole with 1 good game every blue moon?.. Also... why are we pretending that souls games are this insane life altering march through hell like it's a right of passage to being a higher lifeform? These games are undoubtedly hard, but at the same time it's like a 100hr game at most.. the boss you die to a 100 times, each attempt is like 2min. It's so ironic when the most popular genre today is competitive games whether its shooters or mobas, if you're hardstuck gold in league, valo, or any other game, getting to plat is literally more time consuming, more stressful, and harder than finishing the entire soulsborne series, so idk why you aren't praising those games when your biggest point is "instant gratification bad". Can't help but think all those "DS saved me" vids are a roundabout way to stroke one's ego by saying "I gitted gud" without sounding pretentious, and of course the mandatory reason of chasing the algorithm since cultish vids around fromsoft gets cultish support.

This game is so overrated to me, it's insane. I mean don't get me wrong, it's still a great game with some great bosses. Gael and Friede are all-timers for me. But man, there is also so much stuff in it that is just linear and derivative without the inventiveness of the other games in the series. I never really felt the Souls magic playing this game, outside of the DLC. The DLC stands head and shoulders above the main game imo. If it were just the main game I would almost never replay DS3.

I still remember my first Nameless King kill, after over 70 or so attempts, I simply resorted to counting out loud how many hits I had landed in an attempt to stay focussed and try to increase that number with every attempt. On the attempt I actually killed him I was streaming the game to a former friend and to this day still he occasionally teases me with "24, 25, 26 - I DID IT! I FUCKING DID IT! ... easy." I have yet to experience this feeling from any other (non FromSoftware) game.

Liked the video and what you had to say, but throughout the entire thing every second sentence you say gives off a very strong impression that you just try way too hard to be artistic and poetic. It distracts from the point and even weakens it, making it seem like an exaggeration. I hope you notice this and tone it down in future videos. This video did well in spite of the tryhard poeticism, not because of it.
