Dark is a series that asked a lot of questions over its three seasons. Now that the Netflix original series from Germany has come to an end it’s time to look at the unanswered questions from Dark. In this Q&A video we looking at the following mysteries:
Why did Noah build the chair time machine when one already existed?
Why did Noah and Helge abduct and kill the kids?
Where did Agnes go when she traveled at the end of her story?
What happened to Woller’s eye?
What did the Unknown trio kill all those people?
Why did Jonas and Martha see each other as children on the bridge between worlds?
Why was Katharina named that in the origin world if her mother didn’t meet Hannah there?
After Jonas and Martha stop the car crash doesn’t the loop continue?
How did Claudia know to use the loophole that time?
Why didn’t Claudia travel to the origin world herself?
We answer these and many more in this season 3 finale questions video.

Dark season 3 introduced the idea of quantum entanglement, and split realities that can exist simultaneously. This left some fans with questions about how things worked in the Dark universe, and if the characters really had free will. We explain how time travel works, and how determinism influences things.

It’s a great resource for everything related to Dark.
The third season of Dark was more complicated than its previous installments. With two worlds, more characters, and time periods that stretch farther than the ones we’ve already seen. The concept of quantum entanglement was introduced with multiple realities existing alongside each other. This Dark video explains the ending of the story and what it means for each of the characters.

This Dark “Questions and Answers” video covers all 3 seasons of the show, and all 8 episodes of the final season. We explain what happened to Jonas and Martha’s at the end, and explain the mysteries that are still unanswered. The origin world is the only one left at the end, and we discuss what that means about characters we knew for the old world.
Dark season 3 is one of the best for this Netflix series. The showrunners gave the series the ending that they had envisioned, and we think that Dark fans will enjoy it.
In the third and final season, DARK reaches its mind-bending conclusion, moving beyond the concept of space and time. Upon arrival in a new world, Jonas tries to make sense of what this rendition of Winden means for his own fate, while the ones left behind in the other world are left on a quest to break the loop that now not only bends time but also space. Two worlds. Light and dark. And in the center a tragic love story of epic proportions.
What Dark theories are you thinking about as we head into season 3? How would you like to see the series end? Are you excited about the new shows Baran Bo Odar and Jantje Friese are making on Netflix after Dark is finished?

Really helpful video! :) I have doubt that I asked previously but didn't found logically convincing answer. It would be great if you could help me out. If in the end, Adam's aim was to kill alternate Martha then why sent her to save Jonas during Apocalypse and have baby with younger alt-Martha? Why not kill her before that? Why even send her to save Jonas? Adam's aim was to break the knot, then he should have killed alt-Martha rather than sending her to save Jonas during apocalypse. Him sending alt-Martha to save Jonas was the reason of Unknown being born.

X-Phoenix Knight My take on that was, that Adam needed to convince Alt Martha that he is on her side, wants to help save her world. So he prolly made up some BS story that she needed to save Jonas from the apocalypse by taking him to her world etc. So that later on he can betray her and kill her, thus destroying the “Origin”

I have one thing that I want an answer of. If Old Claudia used the Apocalypse time glitch to send herself on a different path to Adam, then why does she then goes to Adult Claudia and tell her that everything is finally going to end? And thereafter she supposedly goes back to 1954 to tell Egon that she's sorry and gets killed. Am I missing something here?

You have not talk about problem it called the grandfather paradox. It when you go back in time and kill you grandfather for example. Because of you actions, you do not existed and so for you do not kill you grandfather. Because you grandfather is live and you're born and then later you kill you grandfather. By killing you grandfather, you do not exist by doing this makes the Godfather paradox. Couple and child had car accident and dies Father builds time machine martha and jonas goes back in time and save couple and child by stopping them Couple and child are live and father does not builds time machine martha and jonas does not existed because of this can't go back in time to save couple with kid Because of this couple and kid dies from car accident. Father builds time machine and now martha and jonas does exist and keeps on going around

Claudia couldn't interfere in the origin world because there's a version of her there! If she had tried to change things there, she may have created more loops. She decides to try sending jonas and Martha there and it works because they don't exist in that world. I do think they are a shadow of taunhaus kid and his wife, which is also pretty cool. I must say that the last scene of season 2 really had me dreading a crappy ending to the show. Bringing in alternate realities seemed like it was bound to take all bets off the table and just break all the logic the show had so carefully built up. But they did an excellent job with it! I was very happy to see they didn’t go with infinite realities. And with the storyline of Tannhaus’s experiment ripping time in two we had a fine explanation of why only two realities (though later they add (at least?) two more).

I believe that that moment wasn’t part of the loop but just happend across all the times the loop existed. It happened just once but was “broadcasted” to the loop every time Marta opened the cupboard and Jonas opened the door.

The ball time machine is a bootstrap paradox, it has no beginning or ending. In S2 finale the martha that saves jonas is finally captured by adam and she gets killed. Thus adam gets the ball time machine from her and adam sends old magnus franziska with that ball time machine to world 2. They are the ones who will give other world martha the ball time machine in first place to save jonas in S2 finale. And also due to other world martha spilt reality. Eve also has a ball time machine which is used by other world bartoz , other world claudia in many scenes. So it has no origin. It caught up indefinitely in the loop without a creation.

I thought the same, but there are multiple of those. At the very least 4 or 5 of those ball time machines being used by Eve's version of the travelers. So Noah, Egon, Bartozs, all of them must have one of their own, aside from Martha's and Claudia's. Both Claudia and Eva have such a better understanding of the loop than Adam, though, that it wouldn't be surprising if actually all of the balls existed due to a bootstrap paradox preserved by Eva (so that she can have all the machines that she need) and Claudia (so that she can steal it from herself and keep researching the cycle).

The scene in the light tunnel means this: even when they are sitting next to each other in the caves waiting for Tannhaus to start the machine, when this happens they are separated and each one start walking through different tunnels, and this because they are from different loops or worlds. So each one is walking through the particles flow at the moment their worlds are being created, and in their way to the central tunnel which leads to the Origin World they find each other's child version. This means that from the very beginning of the creation of their worlds a connection between them was established, a very strong connection indeed, which we can call it an "error", an error in this matrix which will knott both worlds, because this Jonas and this Martha are indeed from different worlds. That leads us to the next answer: because they are the "error" that knotted both worlds, they are the ones who have to untie it.

It's impossible that everything happened this one time, we know this because at the end of the show, all timeline characters are aware of the knot ending as they fade despite not completing their full life cycle. We also know Claudia didn't choose to kill alt Claudia that one time either because she got the answer from Alt Claudia that she had never met her older self (meaning she died every time)

The one concept I may love most about this whole series as it appears to be completely original is that, although it is often alluded in the series that this is an endless cycle, it both is and isn’t. In a sense, the events happen over and over again due to the causality of past and present being broken, on the other hand every time someone dies they actually die and that is the end for them. It’s only through the ‘exogenous’ factor of the journal that any new information can be brought to each new loop and any learning and change can take place

I think Adam's and Eva's worlds were erased in one reality, but they still exist in another. Quantum entanglement. The only way Jonas and Martha could've prevented the car accident is if the reality exists where Tannhaus is devastated by the death of his son which pushes him to create the time machine and inadvertently split the world into a triquetra of pain and death. It's sad, but it's the only way to explain what happened while keeping with the logic established by all the events of the show. The existence of these two worlds and the suffering of everyone in them is the sacrifice needed to keep the Tannhauses alive. A reality now exists where Marek and Sonja and the baby never die and Tannhaus is never sad. Another way I like to look at it, is Marek and Sonja and the baby's deaths, and Tannhaus's subsequent experimentation with time travel, created the other worlds as tumors that grew out of each side of Origin World. Two cancerous lesions full of incest and death and nuclear disaster, that exist parallel to an Origin World where the Tannhaus family lives happily ever after. And to the characters in Origin World, as in the final dinner party scene, those worlds exist as mere ideas or dreams or flashes of déjà vu. It's like Schrödinger's cat. Those worlds only truly exist if you go in and look at them. Just like there is an acceptable reality where the cat is alive, there's an acceptable reality where Adam and Eva's worlds don't exist. The show ending with the dinner scene in Origin World is a perfect artistic choice. It ends the shows on a good and hopeful note, instead of showing anything from the other two worlds where the characters are living in dysfunctional realities of pain and death.

For me, Claudia really manages to break the deterministic loop (likely because she is the only character who does so autonomously, by her own initiative and struggle). The "never lose hope" Claudia kills her evil alter-ego, the "sagacious" Claudia - and becomes freed from any outer agency. Which makes possible for Jonas and Martha to make a genuine sacrifice of their own, and not just to get rid of suffering by a mere suicide. Probably the most surprising and powerful religious metaphor I saw in my entire life.

I may be a psycho, but I would have LOVED it if Jonas and Martha had caused the accident that led to Tannhauser inventing time travel. It would have just been so perfectly bleak... Edit: also, I’m not sure the ending they showed us is a happy ending after all. There are 3 worlds connected that all loop together. We see that Jonas and Martha are still born and exist in the third/origin world, although with different parents. I think Tannhauser invented time travel anyway, the point where the power goes out and Hana feels Deja Vu happens when this machine is switched on in the third/“origin” world. The final world is not the origin of the loop, it’s just part of the BIGGER loop. If you watch it again and think about it, it makes much more sense thematically with the whole series.

My Remaining Questions: 1) Triquetra notebook timeline: The book is written by the unknown, -Eva gives the book to Claudia 2 -Claudia 2 gives it to Claudia 1 and Claudia 1 has it for many years (from her perspective) while she is working with Jonas and Noah on the time machine in post-apocalypse (neither of them know that Claudia has the book). Then Claudia rips the last pages and travels back in time and gives the book with pages missing to Peter and Tronte, pre-apocalypse. -Peter has the book post-apocalypse and it ends up with Elizabeth after he is killed, then she ends up with younger Noah. HOWEVER, in season 1 we see adult Jonas arriving in november 2019 from the cave and he has the notebook and I don't see how it fits in this timeline. 2) When does post apocalyptic adult Jonas go back to 2019? Does he have to wait for the creation of the wormhole in 2052 and travel through it? (it makes sense the hole is needed in the future cause young Noah is shown to clear the mess the hole in the cave became after the apocalypse) Does Jonas go back through the dark matter? (it is not told when they make it start functioning, and Jonas could go anywhere, but i guess going to 2019 makes sense - but why arriving in the cave if that's the case?) Does Jonas use the time apparat? (he has an old non functioning apparat in 2019, could he have used it for the last time to arrive then?) ---- It makes sense Jonas manages to go back in 2052 cause Adam says he tried to solve everything through 66 years, so he kinda respects the 33-year cycle. 3) How does adult Jonas gets the old time apparat in the first place? You could say there's any amount of apparats in the world you need to explain what you want, but creating this time apparat seemed like a big deal and there should have been a limited amount, otherwise a lot more people could have been time traveling like crazy. So I guess what I want is a time apparat timeline too: Tannhaus creates the sketch after receiving the blueprint from old Claudia in 1953. Then completes the machine with the help of adult Jonas in 1986. Jonas take this time machine with him to close the wormhole. Hannah takes this time machine with her then end up bringing it back to Adam when she goes to sic mundus. We see this exemplar from the time machine in 1921 in sic mundus and we don't know where it ends up (could it be the old one i'm talking about here?). Parallel to this, there's another time apparat in Claudia's possession that her old version keeps passing to her younger self after burying in the yard in 1953 to be dug up in 1986. Who created this time apparat? And if this is its cycle, why it never gets old and stops functioning like what happened with Jonas' one? 4) Is it just me that find the ball time machine a little to OP for no reason? It seems you can use it to go anytime you want and makes time travel look like a trivial thing. It gets even worse considering we see a lot of copies of it, meaning Eva's friends could do basically anything they'd want in both worlds. To me it removes some of the mystic of time travel and looks like lazy writing and a cheap way out if they messed up something in the story cause with it they can manage to explain basically any event. If we were at least given a reasonable explanation why in this second world they got so advanced in technology that they can create such a powerful tool while in the first world we have much more limitations with the time apparatus and time traveling in general. 5) How Charlotte and Elisabeth travel in time after kidnapping the baby in 2041? They must have gone to 1971 to give the baby to Tannhaus, right? How they could manage that? (I think the only way out is the pokeball, but we don't know how they could have it and still seems a little bit cheap - this thing can explain anyhting you want). 6) How Noah goes from 2041 to 1920 after their daughter is kidnapped. I know it is mentioned in the video, but I'm keeping this question for the record.

    2) I think in season 3 episode 7 they do mention that Jonas travelled back to the past only in 2052. I assume he takes the broken suitcase time machine, travels to 1986 via the God particle, gives it to Tannhaus for fixing. Then he uses the caves to travel to 2019 and back (hence the reason he's seen by the caves) until Tannhaus fixes the machine. With the fixed machine, he attempts to destroy the wormhole in 2019. 3) I assume the suitcase time machine is left at 1921 and Claudia retrieves it (She has a globe time machine at this point) before the unknown torch the sic Mundus lair. So this is the time machine she gives to her younger self which stops working after the apocalypse in 2020. She has it until 2052 and then stranger Jonas takes it for fixing. Hence there is only one time machine throughout the show. There's no proof for this, just a theory. 5),6) I had the same doubts as well. No idea how they travelled.

    @neilchristianauman8508

For your question 6: One theory of how Noah returned to 1920 from 2041 is that Claudia, knowing much more than anyone else after killing her alter-world self, sent Noah back without letting stranger Jonas know about it. As some of the dialogues have inferred, alter-world Claudia was trying to stall the progression of time-machine building in Jonas's world, under Eve's orders. So it's possible that the original Claudia already had full access to a completed time-machine in 2041 with god-particle. She used it to send Noah back while lying to Jonas that the machine still needed commissioning, for another decade.

@@Katz1964 Honestly, I can't fully answer this question. Noah may have his reasons why he didn't return to Adult Elizabeth yet. Here are my thoughts though, I think that Noah's main goal in going back in the past and following Adam is so that he can find Charlotte. So it is possible that Noah planned to return to Elizabeth after finding Charlotte. But, as shown in season 2, after Noah finally finds Charlotte (adult version), instead of bringing Charlotte with him back to Adult Elizabeth, Noah instead went back to Adam and attempted to kill him. However, he fails and he was then killed by Agnes.

    1) I think Agnes went back to the 50's to be with Egon's wife, and that's because she seemed truly happy when Claudia gave her her blessings to the relationship. She had nothing left to do, so why not continue her affair? 2) I think the images of Mikkel and Martha covered in the black matter are images of deja vu. Instead of having a feeling of it like characters usually do in the show, they actually see it. One of the theories I believe in is that all the characters possess memories of all their past lives and cycles which give them that deja vu feeling. They subconsciously know what will happen and Claudia uses that to her advantage. It was said that each cycle has a bit of a change and with so many cycles, there are enough changes to break the cycle. Like in Westworld, due to repeating the same process so many times, the robots start gaining self awareness and are able to change their lives. So Jonas saw his dad covered in the substance that causes time travel, as he will later find out. And Alt Martha saw Martha from the first world in the dress because that was a turning point in her relationship with Jonas, covered in the black goo that will cause all their chaos. 3) There are two pictures of the Kahnwald family, because they probably came from a series of photos that were taken that day and each family member owns a certain picture from that series. Hanna ripped Innes's face off since she doesn't like her. 4) Noah created the time machine for personal purposes: to try and get back Charlotte, most likely by going back in time and making sure she won't be kidnapped. He said that he is trying to save humanity. In his eyes, saving his daughter will change the cycle and in the long run, the boys won't be killed due to the changed loop. The new future will help him and everyone else. So he is sacrificing little boys to experiment now thinking that they will get to live in post-change future cycles. 5) Eve's purpose to keep the loop going is not because she loves her son so much, but because in her eyes, even the short or painful lives the people in Winden had are still worth living. So by making sure the cycle continues, she is making sure that her family and other town people get a chance to live. Alt Martha had a very normal life along her family until a few days before the apocalypse, so those happy moments that people got to live will continue happening if she keeps the loop going. Eve is the side of life and Adam is the side of death, he prefers to kill everything. The good moments in life do not compensate the bad ones in his eyes. Claudia found a third option that includes both world views, killing anyone who was born resulting of time traveling but still making sure some characters get to live.

One of my theory of how Noah returned to 1920s from 2041 is that Claudia, knowing much more than anyone else after killing her alter-world self, sent him back without letting stranger Jonas know about it. As some of the dialogues have inferred, alter-world Claudia was trying to stall the progression of time-machine building in Jonas's world, under Eve's orders. So it's possible that the original Claudia had already had full access to a completed time-machine in 2041 with god-particle. She used it to send Noah back while lying to Jonas that the machine still needed commissioning, for another decade. P. S. I have also heard people saying Claudia used the golden globe to do so. But I don't think that's the case. It seems she was very careful NOT to show anyone the golden globe that she took from her alter-self after killing her. It only made sense since she had a master-plan to deceive everyone else.

But the god particle hasn't been stabilized in the 2041. Then how Noah travelled from 2041 to 1921(where Adam was waiting for him). The particle got stabilized in 2053(Old Claudia tells Adult Jonas to repeat everything for his younger self) Remember! @@M4DS_GAMING Yup, you are right that it was shown that the god particle was only stabilized in 2053. But also, we know that original Claudia was stalling the completion of god particle stabilization because this is what Eva ordered her to. So there is a "possibility" that Claudia already knows how to stabilize the god particle even at 2041, she just doesn't tell Jonas yet, because as I have mentioned, she purposely stalls its stabilization for Jonas.

We know from the letter that she was in love with him but then, after finding out that Adam killed Eva, she became all evil out of her hate for what Jonas would become, thus manipulating him which acts like a catalyst in transforming him into Adam. 1) I'm still lost in this one 2) What would make more sense to me is that he used the time apparat for two reasons: 1- he stayed within the 33-year cycle which was the limitation of this time travel machine; 2- he had one cause Hannah carried it back in time when she went to sic mundus and got murdered. We see a time apparat in the sic mundus building in 1921. 3) I would guess he learns it when he reads the Triquetra Book brought by Noah in 1920. We don't know everything the notebook tells, but since it was written by the Unknown himself there might be something explaining how it came to be in the first place. It is speculation but I think it's the only solid thing we have to try to answer this question with what is shown in the series.

Marek to me looked much like a male Martha with the classic problems with parents (just like Martha had problems with her parents in prime and alt world) while Sonja looked a lot chiller and calming to Marek, just like Jonas before becoming Adam. And if you notice these parallels/similarities between the two, and think to the fact that prime world and alt world were created and influenced by origin world, then it all makes more sense. This is my take on this theory!

    1) In the last scene of season 1 Jonas went to 2052 and Helge went to 1986 (November 1986). Helge was missing in 1953, 8 months later in June 1987, Noah sent Helge to June 1954 by using the chair. But I don't know what Helge did in that 8 months. 2) I think Noah didn't travel in time. He was angry and he just promised to Elizabeth that he will find Charlotte. First time they could control Black Natter was November 2052. Claudia went to his younger self, Jonas went to 2019 and tried to turn off caves, Noah went to 1920.

I like to think about the power of three in the show. Jonas only existed in ONE of the worlds. Marta existed in TWO of the worlds. The white witch existed in all THREE worlds

Very cool. Jonas existed in one of the worlds but there were THREE versions of him from that world. The 1st who was saved by alt-Martha, the 2nd ran into the basement, and the 3rd who was saved by Adam. And I believe there were also three Marthas, the 1st who saved Jonas, the 2nd who was killed by Adam and then finally the 3rd who was taken to the Origin world by 3rd Jonas. And then I don't think the the white witch had any alternates so there was still three of her, one from each world.

Scene in corridor to me is representing the correct path to go to find each other and jump into the origin world. If they walk forward they will drift apart and repeat, i.e., find the alt themselves in an earlier stage. That scene indicate they must move away from themselves younger to meet in the middle and complete their mission.

I don’t think that the origin world being part of an infinite loop is necessarily what the creators were after, but is definitely one interpretation you could give it. I also _don’t_ think it necessarily breaks linearity in the origin world. To me the interpretation would be a time line going straight (the origin world if time travel is never invented) with a clover leaf (highway) in the middle. The roads on that leaf meeting with each other and the linear timeline at the exact point where time stands still for a fraction of a second. It means split realities where in one or some realities the loop keeps going (triggered by Jonas and Martha actually causing Marek’s accident) while there is at least one reality (the one we saw) where Tannhaus inventing time travel is actually prevented and time keeps moving forward.
