Dark Phoenix - The Movie That Finally Killed The X-Men

Ойын-сауық

Why do I do this to myself? I've seen Dark Phoenix and now I have to rant about it. Join me as I review the final X-Men movie.

i don't think you been paying attention at all or you have such a nostalgia hard on that you didn't pay attention to the garbage that was X-Men....its ALL the fking movies put together, brick on top of brick that sealed its fate. Guess the fking idiots at NOT MARVEL marvel studios didn't realize dark phoenix was the least liked X-men stories of all time, When Apocalypse came out it made us hit out heads against walls...we were hopeful...I held my breath wishing that they wouldn't make a new movie about the phoenix, she was in the Apocalypse movie, no way she will be in the.....the reboot just fed shite up past my ability to care for a franchise thats almost 60 years old....without Kerby X-Men is nothing, any real fan knew it wasn't Lee which is why the whole series SUCKED.....Lee was a businessman not a writer of any quality...

GrimaultWarrior, true. The problem is that the writers don’t respect the comic books. Jean is alive at the end of days of future past (when logan wakes up in the future.) even though she clearly dies or passes on as the phoenix force in this one lmao. Don't tell me its in a different timeline since time is linear in the Xmen Universe (as it is shown in Days of Future past, whatever Logan changes in the past directly affects his own timeline so the new movies are still ocurring in the same timeline where Logan woke up and Jean was still alive). Its just another case of Fox not knowing how to handle an interconnected universe properly.

The thing is, in the comics, the dark phoenix storyline was built up for YEARS. Jean was shown to always struggle with her powers and was often in training with Xavier. He even foreshadowed her evil turn years prior to the saga. Jean was also a beloved character that readers grew up with and seeing her finally give in to evil was gut wrenching and sad. You can't do this saga in one movie since it has too much stuff to build up from. It needs to be a three movie build up, at LEAST. And its sad cause the Phoenix Saga is one of the best x men storylines and seeing it botched not once, but twice is just horrific

It's probably because Jennifer Lawrence and the writers thought that Mystique was just an overglorified henchwoman of Magneto, which doesn't fit their agenda of a "strong independent female leader who can be a role model to young girls worldwide." It's probably the same reason why Harley Quinn got so damn popular as a standalone character despite also being an overglorified henchwoman of the Joker, who is more interesting than her anyway. Also note that the OG Mystique was a woman who was constantly naked while doing an old man's dirty work for him, always killing people and sneaking around when not listening to Magneto's speeches about mutant supremacy. I never had a problem with the old Mystique because Rebecca Romijn brought actual mystique and strength to the character, to the point that I didn't need to hear her make any speeches just to know how dangerous or important she was. It was quite an ironic thing that despite lacking any clothing, she was by far NOT the most vulnerable person in the X-Men films. Romijn's Mystique truly was a femme fatale and worthy of being an interesting villain in her own right, and her defeat in The Last Stand was actually an interesting low point to show just how ruthless Magneto was, even to his most trusted friend.

  • @WhiteManOnCampus

@@TrueMentorGuidingMoonlight Quinn is so disappointing because she was such an interesting character when she was created: a madwoman who had tried to help the Joker, became obsessed with him, and went insane. She's still incredibly competent when she puts her mind to it, able to adopt different accents and behave as a professional in order to play different roles for infiltration and espionage... And then in the 2010s DC went "Nah, female Deadpool who farts a lot!"

@@TrueMentorGuidingMoonlight This. She was never only a henchwoman, she had her own interests and she was capable enough to follow them. And although she was loyal to Magneto you always felt she was only there bc she wanted to. When in the end of the last movie it was teased that mutant powers would return the most interesting thing for me was what Mystique will do now, will she confront Magneto?!. To this day the recast is my biggest issue with x-men, but her story was all but annihilated after that too, so... Funny how Magneto in First Class says she shouldn't spend half her energy on pretending to be something else, implying her future development and growing acceptance of herself, but she never actually follows this advice (bc the blue make up looks ridiculous on her probably). Romijn's Mystique never had to be told anything, she was fully developed personality by the time we met her in the movies - and made an incredibly interesting character at that.

@@Fi_Sci_ In my alternate version of the last X-Men movie I envisioned Magneto dying instead, Fassbender's Magneto is easily the most sympathetic character in the franchise so giving him a closure would be fitting, not to mention be actually moving. And like Logan it'd be R-rated to make the violence and the deaths more realistic and impactful. Making another Dark Phoenix story is absolutely stupid because in Days of Future Past when Logan wakes up in the rebooted timeline adult Jean is still alive, so OF COURSE she won't die when she's younger, there's no tension. Perhaps since in my version Mr. Sinister is the villain and Transigen would be involved, Jean is replaced by a clone, so that way we also have foreshadowing that cloned Jean and Scott will give birth to Cable. Likewise I'd also briefly show Xavier's stepbrother Cain Marko leaving to explore some temple thus foreshadowing that he'll find the gem that'll turn him into Deadpool 2's Juggernaut. Ian McKellen's Magneto didn't show up in the ending so unlike Jean his younger self CAN die in the new timeline. Hell, maybe his absence helped Transigen do what they did to nearly extinct mutantkind. My take of the film would contain foreshadowings to Logan and Deadpool 2, and the main thing would be Nightcrawler and Quicksilver confronting their respective parents (Mystique and Magneto), and we maybe get a tragic flashback of Mystique leaving baby Kurt to a circus to keep him safe from Trask's men, just give some pay off between the characters and tie the loose ends, god damn it, it's the final film of the series.

@@DeepEye1994 The problem with that is they already screwed up the whole origins of all these characters. By making mystique a BFF of charles that supposedly grew up with him, making her unable to abandon baby Kurt by a Church, where he picks up his values from. As she would've been with charles at child birthing age if she was "found" as a 6 year old. The whole x-men series stopped following any semblance of following their origins after X2. 1/2 had some minor tweaks but the characters still had the same personalities and traits of their comics respectively. Then they brought in actors/actresses that thought they knew better, and literally revolved the story around logan/mystique, by bastardizing the stories they are based off of. Days of future past, Logan is not the one that goes back in time. Mystique is never BFFs with Charles and is very much playing to her own ends most of the time. And is very against human rights, but here we are because the pro mutant actress can't do the process she signed up for, a mystique that is "pro mutant" but human 90% of the time.

ravinraven6913 i mean, the event in First Class where his legs' functionality were stolen is the important bit. He could have just let magneto utterly destroy the navy ships, but he didn't and begged him not to. And in that altercation he got shot (by crossfire, sure, but still because they disagreed). Regardless, he was disabled while saving the world from nuclear disaster. Not on a simple car crash or something. So it's still a pretty dang sacrifice. Also, if you look at Days of Future's past, he can walk, even though it's after that event. He explains it's because of a drug he takes, enabling him to walk but removing his powers. So yeah, keeping that canon, he sacrifices his ability to walk so that he can continue to protect the world.

Cyclops, Storm, took up their leadership roles, Nightcrawler found his courage, as well as others had finally come full circle. It's a shame we haven't seen Mr. Sinister ,besides that, the X-Men franchise was fun & worth a watch. Except the stand alone Wolverine, wouldn't hurt to miss that one.

The only possible explanation is that she already had those powers & the phoenix force simply brought them out of her & amplified them, but the whole thing is really just a continuity error. The director obviously just wanted the end of Apocalypse to be an easter egg to Dark Phoenix, regardless of it making absolutely no sense. Nothing more than a "Hey, guys, guess what we're doing next? 💥🦅🔥 HINT HINT" moment to get people hyped up for the next film.

From what I understand, the Dark Phoenix Saga is a big epic that stretches over several volumes, features the death of characters and the destruction of worlds, was built up for a long time and the fact that Jean Grey, who always was the nice understanding one of the X-Men, turned into such a harbinger of doom made it all the more jaw-dropping. What makes those people think they could satisfyingly portray that in one movie? You would have to do something like the Infinity Saga from the MCU, introducing the characters and plot devices over several movies before you go in there. Imagine if Avengers Infinity War didn't happen after several build-up films but right after the first Avengers movie.
