Alita: Battle Angel had the best CGI I've ever seen, especially in motion, but it was grounded heavily in a 10,000 sq ft physical set and perhaps the most extensive WETA performance capture ever. It always needs to be grounded to work. I'm very pleased to see puppetry is alive and well in this new series. I saw the original movie in theaters when I was only 5, which of course scared the hell out of me at the time. LOL. Dark Crystal and Labyrinth were some of my favorite movies from childhood.

@@ztslovebird I'm glad they didn't overuse CGI, but I was also quite surprised how good the CGI that they did use looked. That has to be the best CGI I've ever seen in a series. Most of it rivals many big budget movies in quality and implementation.

AKSBSU I think their CG looks so great because it’s never just CG by itself. The Dark Crystal show crew treats their CG like makeup - the trick is to make it look like you’re not using any at all.

For those wondering about these two's fate at the end of the movie, in the sequel comics, The Power of the Dark Crystal, set a 100 years after the events of this film, they are the King and Queen of Thra whilst holding hands, in an eternal Dreamfast.

@@ratkid6859 They wake up eventually when the Crystal is disturbed by a Fire Gelfling girl who needs a shard to restore her home at the center of the earth. Eventually though Jen and Kira and the rest of the main cast return everything to normal and the Urkskeks take Jen and Kira with them to explore the cosmos

It would both be cool and terrifying to have the ability to get to know someone by touching hands.

My Dad got the jump scare of his life when a bunch of us went to see this film back in January of 1983. When Fizzgig popped up out of the hole, roared loudly, and scared Jen, my Dad nearly jumped out of his skin! He went way back in his theater seat with a look on his face like, "WHAT WAS THAT?" I nearly peed my pants laughing at him.

When she takes him to her podling home, her room is lined with garthim parts and Crystal bat trophies. Hard Core Kira-- the Terror of the Swamps!

Coco the FoxX Yup, they used CGI in the series to expand the visual shots of the puppetry in action. The puppeteers are in green suits, do their puppeteering on camera and their image is digitally removed from the shot.

Ikr in Deet's vision we see a cloaked Brea carrying a small bundle in her arms while she is running away from the Garthem. Also at some point in the movie when Jen and Kira find Gelfling ruins Lira happens to sit on a throne. Maybe this hinted that Kira is or will be gelfling royalty. But poor Brea.

I can somewhat understand. It was controversial when it came out in movie theatres. Moms were concerned because there were reports of many children having nightmares because of the film. It was reported as being too intense and even violent, too mature for many children. I did not see it in the theater because of this, but instead my mother bought me a booklet/audio cassette tape to read/listen to. I don’t think I got to see the movie until much later when I was older ( I might have been in college!). and it was by happenstance- someone renting it and watching it then. I had already been so familiar with the story through the book/cassette tape I was given years before that when I watched the movie (finally) it was like a magical piecing together of my curiosity and imagination I had about the movie all those years. Truly a piece of art. Cinema magic at its finest. It’s sad the movie did not make a huge profit when it came out. Jim Henson, The Froud’s and the whole crew deserve the recognition. I think the movie was just so intense that it scared off a lot of parents. That’s why probably so many as you say never heard if it, and that’s a crying shame!

Anybody else here who loves this movie so much as I do ??? I and my sister watched the movie first (and then again and again !!) March 1983, when we were teens. Every year since then the movie kept on being important for me... We drew many DC pencil scetches (my sister is much better with it...), copied DC artefacts, made our own Jen/Kira costumes (including 3D fotos), and many more things... I also absolutely think this wonderful movie was/is very underersimated, yes. But I do not think this was because of the "cruel scenes " within. The film was for 12 years up, not for 3 or 6 yaer old children, of course. There are soooo many fair scenes within! ( Compare with Lord of the rings and similar -i like too- , there are much much more cruel scenes.) Maybe it was so, as Star Wars III startet at the same time. Or because many (also many critics ) said the DC would be "a little bit boaring" I myself rather think in many similar movies there is rather too many action at once. I like the Gelflings, and I like the story. I believe there is a lot of inner truth in the DC, truth about mankind and our planet too! ( For example: there is not "good" vs "evil" always fighting each other, but: "evil is just a lack of harmony", as the UrRu said...) --So, who likes to talk with me about this wonderful movie ??

One of the best classics, they don't make em like this anymore.

Check out Brian Froud, he did the art/concept for this film along with Henson. He also did Labyrinth. Try and find the making of The Dark Crystal, it's phenomenal.

If you have a Netflix subscription needed to watch the series, you should also have access to watch the original movie Dark Crystal on that service.

This was so great as a kid! My favorite movie, still to this day!! Its crazy to think all of this was REAL! NO CGI it was all really built sets and puppets and acting! So perfect! People dont appreciate this sort of film anymore. It's sad.

You won't be disapponited! it's grander than the movie, has adventure, the same spirit as the original and new characters you never saw before even previous skeksis before there 10 even how we see gelflings drained and all.

I'd always thought that him and Kira would be like Adam and Eve. Helping repopulate Thra with surviving gelflings after everything that happened.

Wouldn’t it be something if humanity could Dream Fast? I think it would help our species get along.

@@Maldoror2112 It is sad but it is true though I do feel some humans are like urRu. The premise behind these two was to show the duality of humanity and their being.

I remember watching this when I a toddler and how the scene where Kira's mother is snatched by those large hands just terrorized me. Though now that I can take a second look at those hands, they aren't Garthim or Skesis hands. They seem about the same size a a Garthim's crab claws to reach around her mother's body like that but we can see two fingers and no talon like fingernails whereas the Skesis have 3 fingered talons. There's also no visible indication of a stump where a clawed finger once was. Whatever the monster was that killed Kira's mother, it appears to be something else entirely. Note: I own and have read the original novelization of the movie and it describes Kira's witnessing her mother being strangled to death by a Skeksis.

Actually, that was a Garthim’s claw. Their right claw looks like a giant lobster/crab claw, while their left one has three finger-like talons. The combination is quite destructive and lethal!

If the garthim hadn't attacked, Kira might have had some "quality time" with Jen while she teaches him about mating. So lucky you were to be a child during the 80s..the earliest film i remember was 1985 at the theater..Rocky IV messed with my head. The Warriors was the earliest vhs tape i remember..and the most twisted yet loved were when i saw Return to Oz and Watcher in the Woods. If u can remember such trauma...i ask u to try and remember Disney's Snow White Live. That is as early my mind will go..and it like Watcher in the Woods..also Disney..traumatized me to the point i realized they were suppressed memories that i conjured back up in 2004. Dont ask how i did that lol

My mother worked for an owner of an art theater when I was a kid. Despite living in the Midwest US, I was one of the few people in the US who saw Akira in theaters back when it was still being called "Japanimation" and few in the west knew much about it. There is little doubt that seeing Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, and then Akira as a kid warped my mind for good.

First minutes I was like... mmm... yeah puppets... and them they touched their hands... my god this is beatiful.

Oh, sweet mystery of Life at last I have found yoouuu!

I am sitting here, October 28th, 2023 at 12:50 AM; a man of 45, with tears in my eyes, longing for my youth; a simpler time, when innocence was upon me, and the future seemed bright. This film takes me back to a past that is long gone, but not forgotten.

Jen had no reason to heal the crystal because Kira was dead. But he did it anyway. Clearly a selfless act.

This movie , labyrinth, short circuit 2, and legend are the greatest movies from my childhood

If made by standard Hollywood studios the Gelflings would be CGI and rapping for some reason

Mee too! Now I only remember the girl surprisingly having wings and creepy glowing eyes from this movie. And I have definitely seen and liked it. Summer 1991 on video at my grandma's place. When I got stomach pain from eating green apples and drinking soda and stayed in bed this day. The movie helped me to forget the pain. when i was young my sister and i would be like "wanna watch the dark crystal" "the movie with the girl with white hair and fuzzy dog?"

The face Jen does while looking at The camera cracks me up for some reason 😅

I remember having a crush on a girl in elementary school because I thought she looked like Kira. Then we were together for a month or two until I broke up because she behaved like Skeksis. Weirdest first lesson on the value of looks vs personality.

I always liked how Jen was raised to be a kind and gentle person while Kira's the adventurous and brave one. For the time this was really straying from the norms of gender in fantasy.

I saw this movie when I was a kid. To this day it is the creepiest movie I have ever seen

My mother worked for the owner of an art theater when I was a kid. Try seeing this when I was 5 then seeing Labyrinth then Akira all in theaters as a little kid. Yeah, my mind is warped for good.

I luckily only had one nightmare from this movie. The Garthim were coming up the road to my house and I tried to close the door but when I slammed it shut the door knob flew off and the door was too small to close on the frame. Only nightmare but it haunted me.

Pretty sure my mom named me after Kira in this movie XD

I’m not sure why but Kira’s voice reminds me of Luna Lovegood’s sometimes when she talks!

When Kira take her hood off it’s exactly like how old Luke did..

I personally feel they look way better in this original movie than the series!!! 💜

The puppets are actually still around! Unfortunately they don’t really look good, Jen ESPECIALLY, he aged quite a bit, I really wish they could attempt to restore them a bit better to how they once were…

I agree. It takes more skill than giving. Kind of like using a sword rather than a gun. A gun is easier but using a sword well requires more skill strategy balance and heart.

Same😂 except never watch it all when I was small. Only when I was a teen. But then I just thought it was a bit boring but interesting at the same time.

I think Seladon is Kira's mother and she was just taken in the moment of danger by Brea. Kira would call Brea her mother cuz she's too small to remember.
