I remember them showing us this when I was in the 5th grade and how traumatizing this cartoon was, I had nightmares for a week about the demented bunny. No one remembered it and thought I was crazy. Glad to know I wasn’t imagining it

True story: I grew up in the 90s in a middle class suburb outside of Sacramento in Northern California. I remember a local police officer coming into my sixth grade elementary school class to present D.A.R.E. lectures and videos to us. I even remember a silly workbook/coloring book they gave us about things like, "What to do if your friends have a cigarette," and whatnot. Long story short, that same police officer found out his wife was cheating on him, and shot her in her sleep along with himself in a murder/suicide. Yup, drugs are bad.

@@Bluegrassriver8 That's why it didn't work, right? Once you saw a friend(I'm a DARE grad from 1988) use, say marijuana and nothing bad happened, why would you believe anything they had told you? My health teacher in high school(1990) was way more practical, he said 'I'm not going to tell you weed and acid aren't fun, because they are. But maybe don't do them. I've now been clean from opiates for 15 years. DARE was a costly failure and I should burn my certificate. ~Fin

So, In my imagination I see a bunch of 11 - 12 year olds sitting in a classroom watching this and everytime one of the kids snickers or laughs, the teacher says " This is not funny" " Robert!" "If you can't handle yourself leave the classroom". Fucking useless DARE program. I remember it in the late 90s. The propaganda did not work. More than half my class became stoners a year or 2 later anyway.

I never in a million years thought I'd ever see a cartoon colourful rabbit smoke heroin. Or for that matter a giant sentient weed spliff that talks and looks like a fucking diva actress. Outside of like a Felix the Cat cartoon anyway. It literally looks like something the Simpsons would have parodied in the earlier 90s. Its fucking AMAZING.

I've been looking for this goddamn thing for years! It traumatized the hell outta me as a kid but watching it as an adult I can't imagine how it accomplished that with this style of animation. The misinformation brings back nostalgic memories though.

It's drugs propaganda aimed to 'scare' children into not doing drugs - psychologically possibly the most foolish route one could go as it invites paranoia, fear etc. Also, evil crack-smokin' bunny rabbits are not healthy for children to watch - as someone subjected to this at school as a child it messed me up for a good while mentally. Some of the stuff, actually most of it is true but it’s dramatized and scares kids without context. When you show things like this it makes kids want to rebel and do it anyway I don’t think I’ve ever come back from one of those assemblies and heard kids saying “wow that was so scary” we all just laughed at it. And this video shows exactly why:

yeah, I learned that lesson early on, because i was an 'advanced' student (mostly because i was awkward and instead of making friends i read books and studied until I started High School) I learned a ton about history and so on that when i sat in on the regular class it was see-through what they taught - going on about how great politicians, prime ministers and presidents have been, much to the schools dislike, I caught onto anarchy/minarchism and decided to drop out of those classes and go to college instead, learn some practical skills and a lot more time for building gray market businesses

Awesome, I remember the D.A.R.E. program getting T-shirt and Police Officers coming to class to explain the program. I missed this cartoon. Now we need a Cartoon in 2019/2020 to despell the myths and facts on Crystal Methamphetamine, Fentanyl, Opioids, Opium and The Opium Wars, yeah.

Yep. It’s definitely borrowing from the 1940 version of Pinocchio as well. The guys in animal costumes seem to be parodying Honest John and Gideon. The one in the rabbit suit also talks a lot like Lampwick at times.

Also as this was terror of my 3rd grade year it keep me from harder shit than alcohol or tobacco so did it work I think so and to the person who found this thank you this was a childhood monster needed to see again

Oh gawd, I remember watching this thing in either 4th or 5th grade for D.A.R.E. years ago Mostly I remember the drug pusher wearing a rabbit costume to try to appeal to kids and his lackey dressed as a bumble bee, which was odd enough in itself and probably why I still remember it after all these years.That and the Weed Queen.

Heh, I see you saw it in elementary school as well! Yep, I remember how the drug pusher wore the rabbit costume and didn't take part of it off until near the end (maybe he got so stoned or buzzed he forgot he was wearing it?) and the Weed Queen always reminded me of Ursula. It wasn't until I rediscovered it here that I found out it was WAY weirder than I remembered! (As if the production team actually used such drugs when making this!)

"I have marijuana coming out of my ears." I'm pretty sure that kid is the only person in the world to ever say that. In my experience, the vast majority of drug users don't brag about it. And for the record, I've only done weed once (ate an edible by mistake in college, didn't like it) and I'm a wine-with-dinner kind of drinker.

Did you actually watch the video? He wasn’t bragging, he was saying that he’s been thinking/writing about marijuana for the Dare paper so much that it’s “coming out of his ears”, aka he’s engrossed and overwhelmed with having to write about it.

Thanks! Been looking for this a looong time. This was what my entire 6th grade dare campaign revolved around. Dare is the reason lsd was my first drug. I spent a lot of time at the library doin thorough research before i tried any drugs tho. And later erowid became a great resource.

hell yeah man. the video says it makes you see stuff that isn't there, but the best effect is how it makes you see stuff that was there all along and you never realized. i'm a better person because of the lessons i've learned on trips.

Remembered seeing this in the sixth grade in the late 90s. Our DARE officer always came to our classroom every Monday talking about the consequences of drug and alcohol use, while this video was presented to us on the first day. It’s interesting some of the animators behind this DARE special also did The Simpsons and is kind of a step-up from Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue. To this day, I’ve never let go of what DARE taught me. Never touched a cigarette, E-cig, alcohol, or any kind of hard drug out there. I don’t need them.

I'm with you man. Even to this day I only drink on occasion and my wife and I are straight edge. We both were in DARE and it just stuck with us. It's not easy when everyone sees it as a normal thing nowadays.

@Jake Folk Dude. I visited a dispensary when weed was made legal in my state. The clerk there told me ALL those benefits you speak of. Unfortunately. Weed is no good if you have a heart condition, so I can’t touch it.

You're welcome, I've been searching for this thing for over a decade now as well. So when I finally found a way to remaster to this one back together again, I figured I should share it with the world.

I saw this one a few times at school when I was a little kid. Brings back memories. I can't take this cartoon seriously, with all that shit happening, how can anyone?

Guy in bee suit: people overdose on uppers and downers all the time around here. How ironic looking back at this DARE special because plenty of ADHD and ADD kids on Ritalin and especially Adderall saw this not realizing that their meds were UPPERS. I know because I saw this in 3rd grade during the late 90s prescribed with Adderall for my ADHD which of course is an "upper". XD!!! Now I see this on weed which is far better than Adderall for my mental conditions.

I love how they try to portray weed as a gateway drug lol

I actually saw this exact cartoon in elementary school - it came with a big packet that you were supposed to fill out with information you learned from watching the cartoon (which of course I being a Huge Nerd actually did). It also had that little D.A.R.E. Dog at the bottom corner as a flip-animation you could do.

They got the drinking part right but you don't really die from it if you drink responsibly

Which is the reason I started smoking weed, in my opinion alcohol is a harder drug than weed, and cigarettes and alcohol are drugs that lead to hard drugs. They are legal and make you dumb and sick, weed is illegal and makes you think. That's how I realized it was all a lie.

@@tree48203 well it actually allows one to move to lower brainwave frequency (mainly alpha) which is more right brain activity, also the frequency we reach in meditative states ,So for me it allows me to think about everything differently than if I was purely in beta left brain thinking. It also allows me to connect with nature(if I am surrounded by it and not in the concrete jungle.
