I was a part of this crew . I worked on the bridge effects. I drove the van as Hanz drove the humvees! Dean was my supervisor (RIP). What an experience. Meet some great people and it was a hard job and long hours. Thank you Bob Wasson from VFXlab and Richard Stuttsman for giving me the opportunity to work on this amazing film!

You and your team did an incredible job! I didn't know that bridge scene was done with miniature until I saw the behind the scenes on Blu-Ray.

It's true man!!! First of all, congrats for your work and your team as well. I watched this movie when I was a teenager and I loved it, I have a question... How long it took to make the bridge, do you remember? Thanks a lot guy... 👍

@@robertander1386 Hi my brother! Thank you thank you! When I came in to work on the film at the Van Nuys airport back lot, the Bridge was already built and they was just completing the mouse/wench system that pulled in a guide that attached to the model vehicles. They needed someone to control the electronics which was a fancy custom speed controller that controlled the motors underneath the stage. The only flaw to it was the delay from us push the forward lever to actually seeing the models move. (latency) in the music world.. lol.. so we would have to easily think ahead of the model and that was a challenge as I am all about zero latency. The part when the van hits the humvee was a accident because of latency. Lol. The director (Roger Donaldson) I think his name was and Patrick loved the mistake and wrote that into the movie. 😂. But to answer your question, it was months before myself on the time they spent to complete the bridge. I know the model builder (Jim Arbough) would know the time line and I can personally ask him.. :). I am guessing 6 months or more. I actually have a piece of that bridge Dean gave me .. 😂. The section they cut out so the bridge could break apart easily during the takes.
Dante's Peak has some of the greatest miniature effects I've ever seen, and it was mostly done in camera as well.
I rewatched this film a couple of weeks ago and MY GOD those effects and miniatures are top notch! Incredible work!!!
This movie beats Volcano for me... the insanity of the models alone makes this movie special. Everything from the freeway ramps dropping to the river flood and damn break. Just incredible work from everyone involved.
When I get a notification of a new Piercefilm Productions video, I immediately hit "play!" Love these!!
Saw this at the cinema and still love it. The model work was amazing.
Man you really don't appreciate all the hard work that goes into some of the shots I'm going to go rewatch this movie now
Absolutely amazing artists and craftspeople at the top of there game! Resulting in visuals that were intense, and totally realistic.

More realistic than the crap they make these days! Haha
Very cool.
very very good stuff in this movie. the whole river flooding the bridge scene was amazing
25 years later and its still a great film. i actually got to drive past the town of Wallace Idaho where the film was shot and even seen the downtown area on my way to Spokane Wa. probably the only time in my entire life ive been anywhere near where a movie was filmed. such a cool experience.
A great bunch of dedicated artists , having each others back , and wondering why they don't get paid more ! A tip of the hat to these people
it was because of clips like this on this channel that I bought Dante's Peak on Blu ray just to get a good look at the effects.
Loved that eruption sequence.
Absolutely incredible model work here! Those were the days. I haven't watched the movie in many years, but now I suddenly feel I have to. :)

I just watched it and knew they were very well made models.
Love Dante’s Peak. That and Deep Impact are some of my favorites. Don’t know how many times I watched them.
Amazing work!
Maybe some of the best miniature action effects? It all looked so true to scale. Definitely steps ahead since the old 70's disaster movie effects.
This was a great film with magnificent effects. I've lost track of how many times I've watched it. So fascinating to see the bridge work, dam work, and the entire town dusted. You all should be so proud of your work and your legacy!
One of my favorite films!
Just re-watched this movie again in netflix. I actually enjoyed this miniature effects than today's CGI. It looks more realistic to me.
That bridge crossing sequence, as completed in the film is absolutely incredible and heart-pounding, and (except for the Willhelm scream XD ) still holds up, even today. You guys definitely did some amazing work and more than succeeded at selling that landscape and the surging flood waters and all the debris.
Great photos. Was the set bigger than anything LOTR trilogy miniature effects built? Earthquake and Force 10 From Navorone had really big dam sets too.
I landed a lower budget mniatures job that year because everyone was busy working on Dante's Peak!
some of the best miniature effects in this
6:35 I always wondered how they did that freeway collapse. Everything about this is absolutely incredible! Now I have to watch the movie again.
I love RC ! I want that RC van bad, i'd settle for a hv too
Simply love this channel. Such gems of videos.
This channel is awesome ! I have always preferred scale model effects to cgi . Even though you can tell it's essentially " toys " ...something is really happening. Cgi is all digital creation except maybe the actors on green screen . I hope they bring back more live action scale model stuff in movies . Now we have far better mechanics and mini cameras. Yes it may cost more , but if I see a movie add and I know it has scale model effects - I'm into it . Whenever I see cgi I go nahh...unless it's a really really interesting story. Love this channel so far.
Really incredible!
These model effects are so vastly superior to modern CGI. Imagine what we could be doing with models now.
I always wondered about how they managed to portray the monastery in "The name of the Rose" so well, were there miniatures used as well?

Not that I know of. They did use false perspective paintings on walls to make the sets look bigger.

wikipedia says parts were filmed at Eberbach Abbey and parts were shot at a full sized mock up built on a hill outside Rome making it "the biggest exterior set in Europe since Cleopatra"

Nothing on Volcano, unfortunately...
They built Kingston, ID at the Van Nuys airport…that’s hilarious. I’ve lived next to both of those areas
would be so sick if after all these amazing miniatures they cut to the volcano and it was one of those paper mache ones you made in grade school and there was vintager and baking soda bubbling out
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🇧🇷
And it looks god dam amazing. Too much CGI in films today time to go back to models and practical effects

@@piercefilm A few months ago, in a secondhand clothing store in Tokyo, Japan, I bought a very stylish Dante's Peak film crew jacket. On the back, there's a large and beautiful patch with the film's name and logo, and below it reads "vfx miniatures." On the front, the name "Kevin" is embroidered. If anyone knows more or who Kevin is, I'm very interested in finding out more. Anyway, congratulations to everyone for the excellent work on the film's special effects. Best regards to all, and happy holidays! Greetings from Italy Java

As usual, incredible work by all the technicians involved in Dante's Peak. Another perfect example of studios spending too much money trying to create a "blockbuster" and utterly failing. I never did see the movie but, judging by the trailer, it looks pretty cheesy and lousy. Ah well...as they say, "a gig's a gig".
These are big full n miniatures..it doesn't just require an artist..you need to have knowledge of auto cad blueprint and engineering skills..if your just an artist I think you better go dream somewhere else..cause it requires an education.
que hermosas esta speliculas de los 80s y finales de los 90s con estas miniaturas en las peliculas, no como ahora todo digital, incipido, sin alma. peliculas genericas con peleas con monstruos genericas con batallas espaciales o en la tierra genericas.
