Arirang Alone symbolizes the history of Korea and split and longing for the North and South to be one. The songwriter’s parents had to leave two sons and a daughter in North Korea during the war. His father’s dying wish to him was “when Korea reunites, go find your older brothers and sister and tell them that their parents did not abandoned them”. Where everyone in the audience sings along is where Sohyang brought in the original Arirang lyrics and melody. It's a very emotional patriotic song for all Korean's. It's considered to be the unofficial national anthem.

Sohyang is phenomenal. It's a blessing to be able to hear her songs. For me she is an exception. Because she is incomparable to anyone else.

Everytime I hear her belt out that top beautiful note, she reminds me of a volcano getting ready to burst- when she says "it will flow, flow, flow.." then belts out that note just like a volcano exploding and leaking down the mountain afterwards, its so beautiful

Danielle, excellent reaction, as usual. This is a very old Korean Folk song. The audience was singing along at one point because it is very well known. I have heard that it is more recently revered as expressing hope for Korean reunification. That was a traditional gown she was wearing and some of the staging was reflective of Korean tradition. Sohyang is instrumental in the arrangement of all of her stage performances so her personality is always on display on the stage. This was her arrangement/cover on a 600 yo traditional song with arround 60 versions and over 3000 variations. The song is protected by UNESCO as part of Korean national herritage (twice for North and South Korea). Her arrangement and performance are from my point of view, total materpieces.

It's actually History of Korea and the clamor for its glorious unification. The cradle of peace, the reality of hate and war, confusion, and the final dream of peace once again when two lovers meet again and walk in life together once again. Arirang. So Hyang is a national treasure.

I would suggest by Sohyang next would be "Everyone" this is a Korean/English gospel sing and her longest, hardest and most emotional performance.

Arirang is a traditional Korean song with hundreds of versions. In particular, this Arirang alone is about the wish for the reunification of divided Korea. The exact etymology of Arirang is unknown. In Korea, Arirang is described often as the word "Han" which means sadness that has been built deep in your heart. So as a Korean, I feel Arirang this way... [To hide the sad sobbing scream of 'Arrrrr~', Switching it to the musical expression 'ang'] In other words, Arirang sounds like holding back tears. Therefore, Arirang hill is not a real thing, it means the ongoing hardship while swallowing sadness. This song expresses a very sad midsummer night's dream perfectly with So-hyang's performance and facial expressions harmonized with the arrangement and production. It consists of three main parts. : Sadness(Reality), Joy(Dream or Illusion), Sadness(back to the reality) 1. Baekdu is the northernmost mountain in North Korea, and Halla is the southernmost mountain in South Korea. In other words, it's impossible now to travel from mountain to mountain. This illusion gradually develops into joy. (most painful part because I know it just a dream) 3. Then, In the last A cappella part, it wakes up from its dream and returns to reality. Really heart braking song for Koreans.

So Arirang is a traditional Korean folk song that’s been around for hundreds of years so it’s very well known. It’s considered the unofficial national anthem of South Korea actually. This version Arirang Alone is a take on the traditional song but it modernizes it and really speaks to the hope of reunification between north and South Korea enabling families who wore torn apart by the divide to see each and be United once again. It’s a very emotional and meaningful song. I think literally every Korean person knows the song in some shape or form.

Another unbelievable vocal performance from her is the song Everyone from the same show.

SoHyang is one of the best vocalist out there. Especially her expertise in using her mixed voice. Probably one of the best mixed in the world right now.

What blows me away is the dynamics between the different sections. As the strings fade a bit you get a more aggressive sound with the horns rounding it out. Her arrangement is absolutely incredible.

We are lucky to live in the same era as Sohyang.

I felt like sohyang described the history of the Dokdo through her composition of the song. Arirang alone is about this island on the east of Korea. It started off very peaceful then moved on to Jpanese invasion of the land where they extincted a seal called Kangchi by hunting them. Then the ending of the song describes how Korea has bright and hopeful future.

I think you would enjoy her singing Misty, and Stay which i believe is her own song.

The push and pulling you mentioned is actually one of the Korean traditional vocal methods called "bending" (I think) because the song Arirang itself is a very old traditional song. Now that you've done Arirang alone, follow up with You Raise me up, Lean on Me, I Will Always Love you, Amazing Grace, Stay, and Misty in whichever order you feel. Last should be Everyone.
