A few notes about the Daniel Smith paints which I've used for many years: 1. the iridescent and primatek paints need time to rewet, not sure why Daniel Smith doesn't mention that in the instructions. As you're used to Winsor & Newton paints or the Finetec paints you know that spritzing them and waiting a few minutes helps them rewet, same with some of the DS mineral or lumninescent paints. A lot of those iridescent colors don't show their best swatched on white paper, but work best with other colors in paintings. 2. All Daniel Smith colors are artist quality, the numbers 1-5 refer to price series of the pigments not the quality of the paint--DS doesn't make student quality paints. Some pigments are more costly to find, or take more time to process, i.e. Primateks are ground down from stones (like turquoise or amethyst) which takes more time to turn into paint than buying a synthetic pigment like phthalo blue. 3. The duo tone colors tend to show the second color on dark colors, i.e. black paper or over dark watercolor layers. Hope that helps :) My favorites DS colors from this dot card are Piemontite, I use that as my red earth color because it has a dark mass-tone and a beautiful pink color in a wash. I love all the Quinacridones, especially Quin Gold, also use Cascade Green quite a bit, and own Iridescent Jade which is nice for adding a bit of light in green landscapes, and Pearlescent Shimmer which adds sparkle to water. Agree with mzebony that mixing those paints works best for me. Thanks for swatching these out, your chart is awesome. I wish I could get my printer to print on watercolor paper.

Thank you so much for your reply - this is an amazing amount of helpful info! I'll be sure to pin your comment so others can also see and benefit from this. Thank you for clarifying the grade levels of paints and the Primateks. I love the idea of mixing the pearlescents with other colours in your palette, I definitely want to give this a try! Even though I'm less likely to use the Primatek colours I can appreciate the effort and resources that go into creating them, that is incredible. Thank you again so much for the info! Happy painting! 😊

I got the 238 dot card (Deserres has it for $17.99) and I like the Primatek colours because they’re mineral pigments. As for the Pearlescent colours, I mix them with other colours to add a bit of shimmer to them, especially the pearlescent white!! Nice swatching, thank you!!

I really like the idea of mixing the pearlescent colours with other colours. It could help add a lot of versatility to a palette, where with the FineTec colours I'm only able to use the set colours it comes with. I may have to give that a try. Thanks for the tip! 😊

I just ordered a dot card from Daniel Smith! I’m building my own collection of tube paints, and decided this was an affordable way to test colors before buying!

That's a good idea! I've been using my dot card while working on art pieces and have found a few new ones I want to add to my palette. These are colours I likely wouldn't have tried without the dot card. Have fun with your search! 😊

This was so useful, thank you! I had the dot card in my shopping basket but I think I’ll instead use the money to purchase a couple or three of the quinacridone colours because they look so vibrant - thanks again from a new subscriber.

I’m glad this was helpful for you! The quinacridones are my favourite also. I do have a couple Daniel Smith colours in my palette now, Interference Blue and Moonglow. I like the blue for iridescent accents and the Moonglow makes a nice shadow colour. 😊

Hi! Good video :) I have mostly Daniel Smith paints - the series number is an indication of how expensive the individual pigments are - lapis lazuli is more expensive than buff titanium for example - the harder is is to obtain and process the pigments the more expensive the paint, and the higher the series number - there are no student grade paints in this line - just wanted to let you know!

11:30 they told that those iridescent & especially interference one paints are meant (for example) for mixing them with other colors - and it add glow to them. Then you can for example add iridescent gold to some light blue and you have cabo blue, and so on ☺️

Oh, that’s pretty cool. I haven’t tried that but now that I have a tube of interference blue I definitely will have to try mixing it with some of my favourite colours. Thanks for the tip! 😊👏🏻

I believe there are 238 in total, but my sample card only had 66 to share. I will need to check out the others though! :)
