Heart wrenching. This song is like experiencing death and waking up on the other side cleansed of all of the weight and burdens of this world....or the catharsis of grieving for a friend's death and being visited by them in a dream where they tell you that they are ok. It's so heavy and sad and yet freeing. Really quite a remarkable piece.

Damn that’s an interesting take
From Daniel himself on part of the reason he wrote the song: "But there’s an obvious spirituality there, an attempt to call out to a spiritual presence but from my point of view, from the point of view of someone that isn’t religious and doesn’t believe in a god. It might sound hokey and/or pretentious to some people, but to me the most valuable aspect of making music is the way that it creates something like a spiritual experience, and for a nonbeliever like myself it’s one of the only ways to get there." This rings very true, not many things give me the comfort that those who are religious have but songs like this definitely help, they give you some sort of strange faith, warmth, saftey.

I have an uncle who put out a few Christian albums in the 70's and 80's ... all of Rossen's music reminds me of those

I can't write much more than what has already been wonderfully written below. I am truly blessed to be present in this life to hear such amazing, beautiful music. Thank you Daniel.
Sitting here, in this yellow house, in winter, alone. Hearing it for the first time, suffering in pajamas, drinking very strong coffee, it's 1:30 in the afternoon, this rests in me, playing in my self, your music, thank you.

Yellow house 😱 grizzle Bear reference!
My mom died a few weeks ago and this song makes me feel closer to her in some way, art is such a crazy thing, Daniel wrote this song in some moment of his life and now I find hope in his words and melody, long life to art, expression and love.
It's so hard to really explain the music he creates. It's just brilliant. Truly a fan of you, Daniel. Keep being great!
I fell in love with Daniel's music immediately.

Joe Alarcon I took my nephew to a comic book shop and heard this EP playing - a little ways into the second song I had to ask ... that's how i found him
This song is so heavy yet comforting..... like going to a friend's funeral
Such a beautiful song. I love how much space is left between the lines. Reminds me very slightly of 'Codex' by Radiohead.

Blown away by this. You sir are just wonderful.
Typical beauty on my melancholy playlist. 💜💜
I love everything Daniel Rossen does. Grizzly bear, Department of Eagles and Solo stuff. He is just so talented.
Incredible. Dan Rossen is one of the greats.
Rassurant d'entendre que la beauté n'appartient pas au passé.... Merci pour cette magnifique chanson.
Dan, you music makes my heart swell like nobody else’s ever has. You are my favorite artist. Your music is so honest, every moment is so special. I want to thank you for what you’ve given us, I selfishly hope you make more, but whatever it is that you do I hope you find joy in it the same way we find joy in your music. all the best to you and your loved ones. I wish there was a music video to go along with this wonderful song.
I just heard this yesterday but it makes me feel so hopelessly nostalgic. It invokes such a strange feeling
stunned with the beauty.
Playing it again. And again. And again. So in love. And so in love with this song, too.
Thank you daniel for creating a soundtrack for my life
This song always gets me. I love the quiet elegy in the arrangement of horns and piano. I'm reminded of David Shire's score to All The President's Men. Similar in feel and a beautiful use of horns so different from the expected bright, punchy bombast.
I sincerely love your music so much. Thank you Daniel.
This is the best thing I've heard in a very long time. Hauntingly beautiful.
Daniel you never cease to amaze me. Wow
so beautiful. love his voice.
Really wonderful. Pleasant surprise.
Absolutely stunning piece of music, thank you Daniel. Here's to many more.
unbelievable. love how the chords become almost optimistic, and then it's back to halloween town. can't wait to hear the rest.

This is absolutely timeless, I can't even fathom how someone from my generation can write and compose something so unpretentiously beautiful. Daniel Rossen and Robin Pecknold are on some John Lennon next level shit.
That picture, and this song.. it's almost too incredible to handle
Thanks for the great music. Your are the best.
such a beautiful melancholy, it's pure pleasure
Gorgeous.
This song is lulling me to sleep and as much as I don't want sleep, I keep listening
This is breathtakingly beautiful.
gorgeous.
had this on replay for days. WANT ALBUM NOWWWWWW
what a fully beautiful person
my awesome taste in music sent me here
Such poetic sound!!
Gets more haunting and brilliant the more you hear it. So very reminiscent of the late, great Gerry Rafferty, particularly at the end with the "How Long"'s...
This is Saint Something...and it's soothing my soul today.
beautiful.
Oh yes. Daniel Rossen you talented individual.
Beautiful !!
in love with this song
Maravilloso tema. Gracias Daniel !!
Absolute perfection.
Fitting. 💜
I need this music in my life
This voice...
I would like to listen to this song while sitting on a porch, wrapped in a blanket, staring at a frozen lake.
so damn nice. Love the atmosphere.
wtf. I'm so excited for this EP. I never saw this coming, but, I'd always hoped! =) Thank you, Daniel Rossen. You've made my life that much more blissful many times. =)
YES!
YES!!
Gonna sleep to this on repeat.
Wow. Juts wow.
Masterpiece
miss you
his piano playing reminds me so much of his guitar playing.
Just heard this on Jamie Cullen's radio show - stunning song.
Spooky Beautiful. As per usual. Keep it up Daniel.
Una maravilla de disco viene en camino .
I sensed an Eliott Smith type emotional connection between the artist and music when I was listening to the EP. I don't know if it's just me. Thumbs up if you feel the same way?
Thanks Isom.
@MissSandu He's just been listening to his favorites. Elliott Smith, Brian Wilson, Nick Drake. They're all over these chords.
FINALLY
on my 2012 playlist! have a look :)
What what what what is this. This is some of the most brilliant newer music I've ever heard. This is new territory in indie rock, and it's pushing the limits right up there with Joanna Newsom and [enter favorite artist's name here to avoid annoying response]. This art is mastered.
Well said, sir.
Stay strong, MrHombrelobo. Good music will see us through.
Grizzly Bear, Department of Eagles, CANT, this... these guys can do no wrong.
Anyone know where i can get the sheet music for this?
THOSE ARRANGEMENTS THO
Ultimate crush on this man and Kristian Matsson
how did u get to play it?
Heading into Mark Hollis territory with this song - and that is a very, very good thing.
Also, there are hints of "happy" in there, that add to a "hopeful" sound if you ask me.
Esta canción me duele y me arde.
To people who say this is depressing, really? Art isn't about being about being happy all the time, artists get sad too, and should express that!
Northern New Mexcio???
Make more solo music Dan. Everyone in the know, knows your the main creative force behind Grizzly Bear. Hell, almost all the songs on Painted Ruins were yours. You're one of those people that always has original songs going through your head i bet... for me, its when I'm driving, they just come storming in, I think its the rhythm of motion. However you do it, however it comes to you, keep going. I mean there's no one else like you man. In a sense you're like Thom, Trent, Nick Drake, Cobain, Cornell, Anne Brun, E Smith, Jose Gonzalez.. it comes out so naturally because you really live it.. and its a nearly endless well, its just the older you get the more unsure that its any good anymore. It sounds like 'me' too much. Maybe its different for you.. but simple grooves are harder to create than the multiple triplet triad arpeggio stuff. Those riffs and melodies dissappear of not used or recorded, or you lose the original structure, you want your catalogue to be quality, each installment. No, "good enoughs" and they stay in the clouds, on a guitar hanger. Well give us more you please! Your catalogue is not big enough yet imo, I'm talking solo work. DoE and Silent Hour are amazing.. but I want to grow old with like 7 amazing Daniel Rossen solo albums, or collaborations outside of GB. So if you can get on that it'd be appreciated. Your art just hits differently. Your lyrics are so honest it makes so many other artist seem like they're trying to hard. Its a dark cloud that you're not sure why its even there. For many people things are okay. Yet it remains. Childhood memories painted down and up and down. Topsy turvey. Then you realize half your life's gone by and the shade fills more and more of your day every year that passes. Yet its how certain artwork is created, by us unwillingly masochistic writers, you don't want to be down, but you also know its where the power lies dormant. And ironically enough it gives you powers, if you use forms to express it. I never want to let it go, id like 60/40%, happiness, and the blue, the mute expression what should be laughter. Music and art are all I really love about existence. If I need to tap in and not ignore my problems.. learning its lessons, forever, so be it. As long as I can speak its language. That's why I hold Rossen in such high regard. You're one of the best translators I've ever heard, it is something, different. Like you're an antenna for all of everything, eveyone, for a few minutes. Yet its very earthbound, wooden, always echoing out the forest. Timeless. Even if you don't realize it. You neeed to make some more fkin music already. Love ya 😘
Robin Pecknold brought me here.
SO FUCKING PLEASED
It'd be great to have this music on sheet so I could play it as well :)
you kinda sound like alex chilton on this one. this ep rules, i love it.
Right On Down The Line.....couldn't agree more with the Gerry Rafferty reference. Good call man.
Dan Rossen is Grizzly Bear.
This is good shit
Raw... Awesome... Rawesome.... Daniel Rawesome. Sorry.
Sun in your eyes off Grizzly Bears new album kinda sounds like this at the beginning. almost gave me a heart attack when i first heard it
this chord structure reminds me of something that 90's billy corgan might create. maybe not the trumpets and all, but the ambiance for sure. love this song, can not wait for the ep
I cant seem to figure out how he is playing these sounds
@porter128 yes! Abiquiu
