This explains him playing Weird Al. Especially the shush part when people start clapping & the "Now clap" part at the end. Plus his love for weird artists like Tom Lehrer in the 1st place made him a top contender to begin with. His high cheekbones & deepest eyes sealed the deal most likely.

Radcliffe doesn’t mention that it’s set to the song “Modern Major General” from the operetta “Pirates of Penzance” by Britain’s own Gilbert and Sullivan. IMO the best version of the song is on the live album “An Evening Wasted With Tom Lehrer”. In addition to his career as a musical humorist , Lehrer was also a professor of mathematics at Harvard. Very fitting because “Lehrer” means “teacher” in German.

Lehrer taught a class called Math For Non-Scientists at UC Santa Cruz in 1987. All of the Arts students were desperate to get a spot, and i was one of the lucky ones. I had no idea who he was at the time, though. We couldn’t Google in 1987. He taught us logic and it was a good class. He was tough. But I’m grateful I had that experience.

The amount of HOURS Daniel Radcliffe put into learning that song, purely for his own enjoyment, is so impressive. I adore that he adores Tom Lehrer. He was pretty big in the 60's, but now a whole new generation is discovering him. I got my niece turned onto him, and she started sharing with all her friends. It's great! That's not even my favorite Tom Lehrer song, though. I love "The Masochism Tango," and "Poisoning Pigeons In the Park" the most, tied for first.
I remember seeing this when it was first aired... Daniel is brilliant and actually sings it faster than Tom Lehrer!

Lehrer is indeed a genius. Him and Weird Al are right up there at the top! The fact that Dan is such a fan of both gives him high marks for character, intelligence, and quirkiness. Love it! I've loved Tom Lehrer since my friend introduced me to his work when were in high school in the 1990s. Even I have to admit that I was never quite so dedicated as to memorize this specific song. I know several Lehrer songs by heart; this is not one of them!! Major props to Mr. Radcliffe for memorizing this, and performing it so well! If he had had accompaniment, I bet he would have done even better; he was kind of rushing through, a bit. The tempo really is that fast, but the accompaniment lends the proper meter and cadence, and doesn't skip hastily over the instrumental measures. Dan was trying to just show off his party trick as quickly as possible, rather than actually performing the song. Which, in this context, was probably the correct assessment of the audience's attention span. Still, very well done!
Came here after finding out Weird Al saw this and asked Danial to be him in the biopic based solely on this!

Banter Brother When you type "Ur" because you can't remember the difference between you're and your, it says a lot about your life, too. Shit for brains.

I love that he's such a nerd and isn't afraid to show it
I enjoy this as much as other Tom Lehrer songs. Love it when he asks them all to shush and then finally says 'now clap.'
"Now clap" you are so cute Dan😊
Omg I love him! The whole "be quite!" thing I bet that's what 90% of performers are thinking when people start to clap but he actually said it lol
Does anyone else notice that he puts his finger to his mouth to say 'quiet', but his hands are down when he says 'shh'?

I am a potterhead, so my chemistry teacher told me about this song 😂
Yesss!! Tom Lehrer is the best, and sung by one of my favorite actors!
Anyone else remember Sheldon Cooper singing this on BBT

"Now clap!"
Love it. I love it most of all because he is a gallionaire but still gets nervous about a challenge like that. A true brit
I watched this in science Me : Starts Doing It The Whole Class : Stares at me
He used a spell to remember all that #HarryPotterCheats
'Now clap'
THAT got him the part as Weird Al xD That's bizzarre. Which is just perfect tbh.
*"Now clap"* 👏👏👏
NOW CLAP FOR I AM HARRY POTTER!!

Ya don't say.....
Watching this now you can just tell how nervious he was, after watching the 20th aniversary special its obvious Daniel was the most actor out of everyone, he clearly wants to be known as a great actor, in this you can see him so unsure of himself but glimpses of what he is now so confident and charismatic, hes truely become a star and I think is definetly on his way to being known beyond harry potter, also this is what got him the role in the weird al yankovic movie
And that’s how Daniel got his movie role as Weird Al. True story💪
