Daniel Johnston - Some Things Last a Long Time (8-bit)

Музыка

8-bit-ish version of "Some Things Last a Long Time" by Daniel Johnston of his album "1990". Original here: • Daniel Johnston - Some... . For the chord-transcription I mostly used some notes about it on reddit & these two cover versions: • Yasmin Raviv - Some Th... by Yasmin Raviv and • Some Things Last A Lon... by Joe Lacombe. The melody is done mostly by ear, so not necessarily accurate, especially the second voice that appears everything now and then (not sure whether it's Jad Fair or Mark Kramer in the original version, btw). Then some sound effects from 8-bit wav archives to imitate the 'real' ones and this little animation to round it up. The pixelated figure on the piano is loosely based on this picture of Daniel: www.markmaynard.com/youngdj.jpg
On September 11th, 2023 it had been 4 years since Daniel died. His death in 2019 struck me quite a lot, as he was a huge inspiration for me as a teenager. As I was growing up in the midst of nowhere in Germany, with no real big city around and therefore no real independent music scene, it was tough to meet people with a similiar taste in music or interests. Also the internet was just in its early days: veeery slow and without social media despite some forums and myspace. Hence I've always felt a bit like an outsider, particularly when it comes to music. Maybe because of that I once ordered a sampler on ebay back then called 'Songs in the Key of Z - The Curious Universe of Outsider Music'. On CD 1 it had The Shaggs "Philosophy of the World" as the opening track followed by "Walking the Cow" by Daniel Johnston. These 2 CD's opened up a whole new world for me - suddenly I KNEW that there where people so much different than those I was surrounded with in the village. Some years later I freed myself from that place, moved to Berlin and Daniel's music followed and remained throughout the years. I remember singing to his songs, putting them on mixtapes or crying to "The Devil and Daniel Johnston". And I remember how unreal it felt, when Daniel died. As if this world, that once was opening up for me as a teenager, suddenly collapsed without warning. The certainty of death, that all my heroes are going to die, all my loved ones, all my foes, everything.
